Young Guns Star in First Intrasquad Game
One game played this Spring, and already the buzz is all about Matt Szczur and Brett Jackson. Matt Szczur drove in six runs, including a grand slam, a two run double, and accomplished the rare feat of scoring from second base on a sacrifice fly for the Blue Team who blasted the white team 10-4. Brett Jackson was the one who got things started however, basting a lead off homer. Sparkplug Tony Campana finished the day with three hits, and three runs scored.
As you can imagine, in a game with 14 runs the pitching took it on the chin. Travis Wood gave up six runs on six hits including two homers in three innings, Wood is battling for one of the remaining rotation spots, not sure that this start will go too far in determining anything. Randy Wells, who is also battling for one of the remaining starts, gave up three runs on four hits in three innings of work. What the Cubs are looking for here is command, and innings at this point, and the first few games are not going to pretty for pitchers.
