Casey Weathers Removed From 40-Man Roster

The Cubs removed RHP Casey Weathers from the 40-man roster today.  He was obtained this offseason with Ian Stewart in the deal that sent Tyler Colvin and D.J. Lemahieu to the Rockies.

Weathers, 26 was the 8th overall pick in the 2007 draft but has been slowly working his way throught the minor leagues since having Tommy John Surgery in October of 2008.  Weathers still has a very good arm he just needs to become more consistant and have better control of his pitches.  The Cubs were able to assign him to Triple-A Iowa without losing him and he will most likely start the season there.

As far as the 40-man roster goes with removing Weathers from it, the loss of Carpenter and the signing of Concepcion, the roster now stands at 39.  This will give the Cubs the flexibility to add a non-roster invitee to the 40-man roster or you could speculate it might be left open for the possibility of signing Cuban prospect Jorge Soler.
