Cubs Use Long Ball to Down Rangers

Story of the day today was the Cubs bats, as they launched four bombs in route to a 11-4 victory over the Texas Rangers.  Matt Garza also found a groove on the mound turning in his longest outing of the Spring with five solid innings.  The defense didn’t help Garza out today, committing three errors in five innings behind Garza, he ended the day giving up three runs all unearned.

W:  Garza (2-2)  L:  Lewis (0-2)  SV:  None
CUBS 11 Rangers 4 – Full Box Score

At the Plate:
The Cubs did some major damage at the plate today, four different guys went deep off Rangers pitching.  Brett Jackson, Alfonso Soriano, and Joe Mather all hit 2-run homers, while Ian Stewart joined the fun with a solo shot.  Mather and Stewart had the big days at the plate.  Mather was 3 for 3 on the day, and drove in two runs, he is now hitting .421 on the spring.  Stewart was 2 for 3 on the day, he drove in one run and scored twice.

On the Mound:
Garza started and went a strong five innings getting the victory.  Overall the Cubs pitching was fantastic only giving up 4 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits against a pretty stacked Rangers lineup.  Mateo followed Garza and could only face one batter before leaving the game injured.  The news does not sound good for Mateo as he is said to be headed back to Chicago to see doctors there with pain in his right elbow, more to come on that as we get it, but it does not sound good.  De La Cruz, Russell, and Dolis all pitched scoreless innings.  Don’t look now but Rafael Dolis might be finalizing a spot in the Cubs bullpen.  He has yet to give up a run this spring over six innings of work, he’s only allowed two hits, one walk, and has struck out three.

Game Highlights:
Ian Stewart hits a solo home run
