Cubs to Pick 6th in Upcoming Draft
The Cubs will be picking 6th overall in the first round of the 2012 MLB first year player scheduled for June 4th. The Cubs also have two supplemental (or sandwich) picks that they received for Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Pena. The Cubs pick 43rd overall (Aramis Ramirez, Type B to Brewers) and 56th overall (Carlos Pena, Type B to Rays).
This will be a great, and the first, opportunity for Theo and his new staff to put their mark on the Cubs organization through the draft. I’m really excited to see what they come up with as the first year player draft really is a crap shoot. Baseball is very different from other professional sports when it comes to the draft, if you hit on one or two guys out of the 40 round draft (used to be 50 rounds until this year) then it can be considered a success. We will obviously have more of a breakdown of who the Cubs might take at the #6 spot as we get closer to the draft.
The Cubs have 12 total picks in this draft, and have just under $8MM in the bonus pool available, a huge departure from past years under the new CBA. In comparison the Cubs spent $20MM in the 2011 draft, that is no longer an option by rule.
