Do You Smell What the “Rock” is Cooking?
That was an easy one, of course I’m talking about Roderick “Rock” Shoulders, a 2011 25th Round Cubs draft pick. Rock, a high school stand out at Brandon High School in Temple Terrace, Florida was originally a draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2010 but chose to go to college instead of turning pro. After a productive season at State College of Florida – Manatee, Sarasota where he hit .318 in 52 at bats with 14 home runs and 58 RBI’s, not bad for a Freshman, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2011 first year players draft in the 25th round. More after the jump.
Rock’s a big dude to say the least, standing 6’2″, 225 pounds, he’s an imposing figure in the batter’s box. The big first basemen bats from the left side, which is a huge plus for the Cubs as they are always in search of a left-handed power bat. I know what you’re saying, the Cubs have Rizzo, and LaHair, but Rock is not knocking on the door of the majors, he’s a developing prospect that by the time he is ready there is no telling where Rizzo or LaHair will be. Hopefully all three are productive and have a shot at not only playing for the Cubs at the highest level, but succeeding. Rock’s first taste of professional experience in the Cubs organization was playing for the Cubs Arizona Rookie League team. It’s way too small of a sample size, but Rock played 8 games at that level, hitting .188 (6-32), of those six hits, five were doubles, and that’s what Rock brings to the table, slugging. The important thing here is that Rock got that experience at 19 years old, there is tremendous upside here. I can tell you, he is one of the most intriguing Cubs prospect on my radar, and I’m really excited to see how Rock progresses through his first full professional season in the Cubs organization. Currently Rock is participating in extended Spring Training down in Arizona, we will keep you posted as his year progresses with stats, and highlights, and maybe if we are lucky, we will hear from Rock himself, hint, hint… Stay tuned!
Rock also participated in the 2010 4th Annual Power Showcase, follow this link for more info on Rock.
