Cubs Players of the Month: May 2012

In a month that saw 17 total losses, and a 12 game losing streak it’s hard to find bright spots, I did my best.  Here are the players of the month for May, thank God it’s over.

David DeJesus

Not a bad month at all for the Cubs lead-off hitter, and sometimes number three hitter, yeah when the offense is bad it’s bad.  But DeJesus has done everything he can to put the Cubs in a position to score as he fashioned a .400 OBP in the Month of May.  DeJesus also had four triples in the month, including two in one game.  He also became my hero during the 12 game losing streak when he picked up a home run ball and launched it into the River in Pittsburgh, that is exactly how every Cubs fan felt at that moment.  Month’s like this for DeJesus will make him a very attractive target at the deadline, odds are he will be dealt, but it has been nice to see at least one guy be patient at the plate, I will miss that if he is traded.

Jeff Samardzija

Jeff Samardzija has been pitching like an ace all year, and May was no different.  The Cubs only had 10 wins in the month, Samardzija recorded three of them, and should have had one more at least.  Samardzija is commanding all of his pitches, thus he is throwing less pitches early in games which is allowing him to get deep into games.  The one thing he is learning on the job is how to finish games off, most of the runs he has given up has been the third time through the order around the 7th inning or so.  If he can lock that down then he will become a certifiable ace, right now he will have to settle for being the Cubs #1.  Hopefully he continues to improve as that will only help make this staff something to be reckoned with moving forward.
