Oh No! Cubs Fall on Santo’s Big Day

Sorry, I had too.  Of course as many fans know, the “on no!” is famous because that’s what Ron blurted out when Brant Brown dropped the ball in Milwaukee.  Sure it was a horrifying moment for every Cubs fan, but listening to Ron Santo share that agony I think brought fans to a realization that Ronnie was just like us.  That’s why so many people loved him, he was just like me and you, but with a crippling disease.  Today he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, as bittersweet as a moment can get.  It was the one thing missing from Santo’s career and life and today he finally got it, unfortunately he was no longer around to see it.  Congrats Ronnie!

I should probably stop there, but I feel I owe it to you, my loyal reader to recap the events, or lack-thereof from today’s Cubs game.  The Cardinals started right were they left off yesterday as they jumped on Travis Wood with four runs in the first, the first two of which scored on, you guessed it, a bloop double that caught the chalk.  That was pretty much all she wrote for the Cubs as they followed up yesterday’s four hit shut out performance with a five hit shut out today resulting in a series sweep for the Cardinals.  Travis Wood settled down after a rough first but ran out of gas in the fifth as the Cardinals built up a 7-0 lead.  Wood lasted six innings giving up seven runs, six earned on nine hits while walking two and striking out four, it was the second sub par outing in a row for Wood as he fell to 4-5 on the season.  As I mentioned the Cubs offense was non-existent today as it was for the entire series.  Bryan LaHair was 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss and that was about it as the Cubs were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Full box score and highlights after the jump.
