Castro’s Extension Official!

Here is our post from August 18, 2012-

The Cubs have signed Starlin Castro to a 7 year $60MM extension.  Great news, more when we get back from the 2012 UA High School All American game.

Well, now we finally have more.  The Cubs announced today that they have officially come to terms on an extension with Starlin Castro.  The deal is for 7 years, and $60 million, here is a full breakdown of the deal from the Tribune.

Castro, who will give up three years of free agency, receives a $6 million signing bonus and has a club option after the final year for $16 million or a $1 million buyout.

He will receive salaries of $5 million, $5 million, $6 million, $7 million, $10 million and $11 million.

This is a big piece of the future right here, and it comes cheap.  Castro has made physical errors, and mental errors this season, but people around the club have seen improvement and see what he can become.  This is a no lose situation if I’ve ever seen one.

Cubs Collapse Late Against Brewers

For whatever reason the Cubs can’t solve the Brewers, they not only lose to the Brewers, they get blown out by them.  The Cubs raced to an early 3-1 lead last night but couldn’t hold it as Aramis Ramirez and company pushed across three runs in the 5th to take a 4-3 lead.  A Brett Jackson home run in the bottom of the sixth made it 5-4 Brewers, but that was as close as the Cubs would get as the bullpen exploded late.  After giving up one run in the 8th the Cubs pen put on a show in the ninth surrendering nine runs on eight hits.  The best performance on the mound in the ninth inning belonged to Cubs utility outfielder Joe Mather who tossed one-third of an inning giving up only a single.  No word yet if Mather will have a shot to make the team next year out of the bullpen  It was more of the same for the Cubs at the plate against Brewers pitching.  By  more of the same I mean striking out, a lot, as the Cubs fanned 15 times last night, this coming on the heels of striking out 39 times in the three game series in Milwaukee last week.  As I mentioned Brett Jackson went deep, he is locked in right now, he finished the night 1-for-3 with his fourth home run, two walks, an RBI, and a run scored.

Cubs Acquire Anthony Recker From Oakland [UPDATE / Maine DFA'd]

The Cubs and A’s have swapped catchers that they each DFA’d last week.  Here’s the timeline of events from MLBtraderumors.com

12:59pm: The Athletics will obtain catcher Blake Lalli from the Cubs in the deal, Slusser reports (on Twitter). Chicago designated the catcher for assignment last week and recently outrighted him to Triple-A Iowa. Lalli, who made his MLB debut this year, has a .257/.292/.392 line in 319 plate appearances at Iowa.

12:29pm: The Cubs will acquire Anthony Recker from the Athletics, the catcher’s agent confirmed to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter link). Oakland had designated Recker for assignment exactly one week ago to create 40-man roster space for Brett Anderson.

Recker appeared in 13 early-season games for the Athletics, but he hasn’t played at the MLB level since May. The 28-year-old has a .265/.358/.435 batting line in 229 plate appearances at Triple-A this year.

On the surface it looks like the Cubs just traded Lalli away and got Lalli in return.  But, I think there is a little more to Recker’s game and a little bit more upside.  I would expect him to be at least be involved in the backup catcher race next year.

[UPDATE] Scott Maine has been designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Recker.

August 27 – 30, 2012; vs. Brewers – Series Preview

Milwaukee Brewers Mascot Wallpaper

The Cubs look to continue their success on the longest home stand of the year as they welcome the Brewers to town for a four game set.  Revenge might also be on the Cubs mind as they were swept by the Brewers last week in Milwaukee.  At this point both teams are playing out the string, but it’s an important time for many young guys as they are trying to impress the front office heading into next year.  One guy that is doing that lately is Brett Jackson, after struggling immediately after his call up Jackson has made the necessary adjustments to find results.  It seems to be working as Jackson was 4-for-8 against the Rockies with two home runs and three RBI’s.  He will look to continue that success against a Brewers team that is finally finding some traction, just a little too late to salvage this season.  The Brewers are 7-3 in their last ten games and are playing much better baseball of late.  They are led by reigning MVP Ryan Braun who is putting up similar numbers this year, if the Cubs want to get that revenge against the Brewers they are going to have to shut Braun down.  Surprisingly the Cubs have limited Braun this year, sure he is hitting .304 against the Cubs this year but he only has one home run, and four RBI’s.

Volstad’s Winless Streak Ends at 24, Rejoice!

It was a long day at Wrigley today, to Chris Volstad the six and a half hour day was nothing compared to the over year-long wait to get back in the win column.  Twenty-four, that is how many times Chris Volstad made a start on a big league mound between wins.  For the majority of the day it didn’t look like this game would get played at all as the Cubs and Rockies sat through a two plus hour rain delay before getting underway just before four O’clock local time.  Volstad was on right away as he was locating on both sides of the plate and keeping the ball down consistently for really the first time all year.  Volstad avoided the big inning which is usually his downfall, he finished his day after 6.2 innings giving up no runs on three hits while walking three and striking out three to get the win.  The Cubs offensive attack was finally just that, an attack, as they pounded out nine hits and scored five runs in the victory.  Anthony Rizzo, who has been showing some fatigue of late had a solid day at the plate going 2-for-2 with two walks.  Starlin Castro also had a good day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and three runs scored.  Brett Jackson continued his solid series today as well as he was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored, he finished the series 4-for-8 with two home runs, three RBI’s, and three runs scored.

FULL BOX SCORE

Game Highlights:
Volstad’s Great Outing
DeJesus’ RBI Single
Great Catch by Jackson
Castro’s Slick Play

Cubs/Rockies Scheduled to Start at 3:35 PM CST

Not sure how, but the Cubs and Rockies are now scheduled to start at 3:35 PM CST.  My guess would be that they are going to play while the tarp is still on the field…  There is rain everywhere still, fingers crossed.

Thanks,
