Still on a high from yesterday’s comeback/walk-off victory the Cubs will try to win a second straight game over their rival, and continue to play the role of a playoff roadblock. Travis Wood takes the ball for the Cubs today on a cool, and wet day at Wrigley Field, it’s dry now but they are expecting rain at some point today. Here is how the Cubs will line up at 12:05 PM CST on WGN.

September 21 – 23, 2012; vs. Cardinals – Series Preview
Another series, and another contender heads into Wrigley Field as the Cubs look to finish their 2012 season strong and play spoiler. The Cardinals are hitting their stride once again as they have won four
straight and currently hold a 2.5 game lead over Milwaukee for the final wild card spot in the National League. It also sounds like they will be getting a boost to their rotation as Chris Carpenter is slated to make his 2012 debut against the Cubs in game one of the series. Up until the last series against the Reds the Cubs were playing pretty solid baseball, but the bats have gone cold, and the pitching has followed. It should be a good atmosphere at Wrigley all weekend as these games are usually close regardless of the record, and these games mean everything to the Cardinals. I’m expecting an awful lot of Cardinals fans at Wrigley, hopefully the Cubs can keep Wrigley quiet, wait, that doesn’t sound right at all.
Here are the pitching matchups for the series.
Friday September 21, 2012
St. Louis: Chris Carpenter (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Cubs: Chris Volstad (3-10, 6.26)
Saturday September 22, 2012

July 27 – 29, 2012; vs. Cardinals – Series Preview

The Cubs get an opportunity for revenge right away as they face off against the Cardinals this weekend in Chicago. The Cubs just saw the Cardinals last weekend in St. Louis and it wasn’t pretty as the Cards swept the Cubs and the Cubs didn’t put up much of a fight. One run was all that the Cubs scored last weekend against the Cardinals, that’s hard to do. The Cubs bounced back against the Pirates however as they took two out of three from the Central Division contender in Pittsburgh, which is also hard to do. The Cardinals were struggling in the second half of the season until they met the Cubs last weekend. Counting that weekend they are 6-1 in their last seven games as they try to chase down the Reds and Pirates who sit above them in the Central Division. It will be interesting to see if the same Cubs team that starts this series will be there to finish it as we roll towards the trade deadline. On paper this matchup couldn’t get anymore lopsided as the Cardinals are number one in the NL in runs scored and the Cubs are last, but the Cubs pitching has been outstanding as of late, they will need to be to win the series. Full preview/breakdown after the jump.
Cubs Spoil Cardinals Big Day

Okay, I’m sure the Cardinals will live, they walk away from today’s game with a loss but they also got a rather shiny ring to commemorate their World Championship last year that the Cubs had a huge hand in. Today, the Cubs got a small piece of revenge beating the Cardinals 9-5 at a soggy Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Adam Wainwright, who is returning from Tommy John this season was beat for the second time this year, while Jeff Samardzija earned his second win in as many starts for the Cubs. While the Cubs won by four runs it really could have been much more as it was a tale of two games.
Cubs Ambush Cardinals
Cubs are all over the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright. Ian Stewart hit a 3-run homer in the first, and Bryan LaHair launched a grand slam in the 3rd, Samardzija looking good again. Bottom of the 3rd, Cubs lead 8-0

April 13-15; @ Cardinals – Series Preview
The Cubs get their first major test of the year in St. Louis this weekend. The Cardinals are crushing the ball, and not giving up to many runs either, that’s usually a recipe for success. The Cardinals sit atop the Central Division aty a 5-2 record and have shown no signs of slowing down coming off of their Championship season last year. The Cubs left Wrigley with a better taste in their mouth after beating the Brewers 8-0 on Thursday afternoon. However, the Cubs aren’t satisified with their play as they currently sit at the bottom of the Central with a 2-5 record. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs sneak up on the Cards this weekend and steal 2 out of 3 games. The Cubs played better than that 2-5 record indicates on the season opening home stand, and I think a trip on the road might do them some good. Go Cubs!
