Spring Fever – March 24, 2015 (Cubs Lineup, Broadcast Info)

edwinjacksoncubsslide

We are twelve short days away from real Cubs baseball, which means that important decisions are looming for this coaching staff.  Edwin Jackson figures to be involved in one of those decisions, in a good way or bad, depending on how you look at it.  Joe Maddon has talked about thinking out of the box when it comes to Jackson by possibly piggybacking Travis Wood and Jackson in the 5th spot.  I’m not a huge fan of that, but if both guys prove worthy of a roster spot then there aren’t many more options that don’t involve the Cubs eating a lot of money.  E-Jax gets the ball today for the Cubs as they take on the A’s at 3:05 PM CST, the game can be heard on cubs.com, no TV.  It’s unfortunate that the game is not on because the lineup is tasty today.

1. Fowler – CF
2. Lake – LF
3. Soler – RF
4. Rizzo – 1B
5. Bryant – 3B
6. Montero – C
7. Baez – 2B

Still no Starlin Castro as he is working back from a groin issue.

Bryant Powers Cubs to Wild Win

chc-sea-3-21

Full Box Score

At this point I wonder if baseball is even hard for Kris Bryant, because it doesn’t look like it is.  Another day, another two dinger game for Bryant as he finished the day 2-for-2 with said two dingers, a walk, and FIVE RBI, goodness.  The rest of the Cubs followed Bryant’s lead as they pounded out sixteen hits en route to scoring twelve runs to beat the Mariners 12-10.  Lost in the Bryant madness is the spring that Addison Russell is having, Russell went 2-for-3 with his first homer of the spring, a run scored, and two RBI, he’s now hitting .409 on the spring.  Last year the Cubs cracked their fair share of homers, this spring they have hit 28 which leads all of baseball, that includes the four they hit today (Bryant, Russell, Castillo, Bryant).  After a horrendous 1-8-1 start the Cubs are now 9-10-1, playing much better baseball, and getting results.

Russell

The Cubs make their 2015 WGN debut today as they battle Johnny Cueto and the Reds at 3:05 PM CST from Sloan Park.  Travis Wood gets the ball for the Cubs as he looks to continue a strong-ish spring with eyes on the 5th spot in the rotation.  Command has been much better for Wood as he has yet to walk a batter this spring, he has given up seven hits in five innings, but no free passes helps.  The Cubs lineup is missing Bryant so that will make everyone sad, but there are some exciting players to watch today, like Addison Russell who is having the best spring of anyone not named Kris Bryant.

1. Fowler – CF
2. Denorfia – LF
3. Rizzo – 1B
4. Montero – DH
5. Baez – 2B
6. Baxter – RF
7. Ross – C
8. La Stella – 3B
9. Russell – SS

Dingerpalooza! Plus Another Loss (VIDEO)

Full Box Score

Felix Doubront did nothing to help his cause for the 5th spot in the rotation as he played a huge role in blowing an 8-3 lead today.  The Cubs went on to lose to the Angels 10-9 but the story today, as it is most days now, was how the Cubs got their runs, hooray prospects!  It was the Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler, and Addison Russell show as the three headed monster put on an impressive display with the bats.  First the powerful results, Kris Bryant went deep twice, two monster shots, he finished the day 3-for-4 with two dingers, a book rule double, three RBI, and three runs scored.  Jorge Soler joined the fun as well going 2-for-3 with his own bomb, two RBI, and a run scored.  Russell was super impressive all over the field, he finished 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a couple of slick plays in the field.  The pitching wasn’t so great today as Jason Hammel was beat up in addition to Doubront.

jason-hammel

The Cubs will hit the road today as they take on the Angels at 3:10 PM CST.  Jason Hammel will get the ball for the Cubs looking to rebound from his first start which wasn’t so great.  Today’s game can be seen on MLB.tv with a paid subscription, or listened to through the same device with an MLB.com account.  There were whispers that MLB Network would pick up the game because of Will Ferrell’s appearance, but I’m not 100% sure on that.

1. Denorfia – DH
2. Baez – 2B
3. Soler – RF
4. Olt – 1B
5. Bryant – 3B
6. Lake – LF
7. Castillo – C
8. Russell – SS
9. Szczur – CF

SP – Jason Hammel

Impressions?  Joe Maddon is doing his best to get Mike Olt in the lineup every single day, that should tell you something.  The last time Baez, Soler, Bryant, and Russell were in the lineup there were a bunch of LOUD NOISES, hope that happens again today.

Soler Meme

Travis Wood will make his second start of the spring today as he takes the mound against the Indians.  Wood was very good his first time out, and a second solid performance would go a long way towards cementing that 5th spot in the rotation.  It’s a prospect heavy lineup for the Cubs today as Alcantara, Soler, Baez, Bryant, and Russell are all starting.  First pitch today is at 3:05 PM CST, and the game will be on TV!  Well, it’s on MLB.tv, you need a subscription to watch, but you can listen for free if you have an account via MLB.tv as well.

1. La Stella – DH
2. Lake – LF
3. Alcantara – CF
4. Soler – RF
5. Baez – 2B
6. Bryant – 3B

Arrieta FIRE

Jake Arrieta returns to the Cubs mound for the first time this spring today against the Rangers, I’m excited.  Arrieta broke out in a major way last year, and now makes up a potent 1-2 punch at the top of the Cubs rotation with Jon Lester.  Once again, no TV for today’s game but you can catch Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer of WBBM 780(MLB.tv, link below), first pitch is 3:05 PM CST.  Here is how the Cubs will lineup behind Arrieta…Nice to see La Stella still getting time at 3B, that guy will most definitely help Maddon out with versatility around the infield.

Listen Live

1. Alcantara CF
2. La Stella 3B
3. Baez 2B
4. Sweeney RF
5. Olt DH
6. Valaika 1B
7. Castillo C
8. Lake LF
9. Russell SS

Cubs Falter Late (Twice) but Dingers Everywhere!

cubs-giants-3-5-15FULL BOX SCORE

The young Cubs provided the fireworks early against the Giants before the bullpen couldn’t find away to get outs, and blew a 5-0 lead en route to an 8-6 loss.  It was a lineup that had Cubs fans buzzing, Jorge Soler, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, and Kyle Schwarber, oh my.  It was Schwarber who did the heavy lifting as he jacked a grand slam in his first at bat, giving the Cubs an early 4-0 lead.  The Cubs pitching made that hold up early on as Jacob Turner, and Pierce Johnson were on top of their game, Johnson was particularly impressive.

At the plate:

  • Kyle Schwarber was the star at the plate going 1-for-3 with said grand slam.
  • Jorge Soler hit a number of balls hard, he finished the day 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Billy McKinney came on late and went deep, he finished the day 1-for-1 with an RBI.
  • Kris Bryant went 0-for-2 with a walk, and a run scored.
  • Addison Russell was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Albert Almora didn’t start but finished the day 2-for-2, good to see.

On the mound:

  • Jacob Turner got the start, and battled command early, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while walking two, and striking out one.
  • Pierce Johnson was outstanding, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up no hits while walking one, and striking out one.
  • Corey Black struggled, he worked one inning, giving up one run on one hit while walking two, and hitting Hunter Pence, breaking his forearm, ouch.
  • Hunter Cervenka was worse, he was only able to register one out, he gave up five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking two.

cubs-as-3-5-15FULL BOX SCORE

A tie.  The Cubs and A’s tied today.  Mike Olt got the offense off and running early as he blasted a two-out, two-run bomb.  Unfortunately that was all the Cubs could muster as they went scoreless the rest of the way while scratching out only five hits.  The pitching was outstanding as Travis Wood, Neil Ramirez, and Drake Britton, among others, shut down the Athletics offense.

At the plate:

  • MIKE OLT!  Olt finished theday 1-for-2 with a home run, and two RBI.
  • Chris Coghlan was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
  • Newcomer Miguel Montero was 1-for-2 in the tie.

On the mound:

  • Travis Wood got the start, and was flawless.  Wood worked two scoreless innings giving up no hits, walking none while striking out two.
  • Neil Ramirez was stupid good per usual.  Ramirez worked one scoreless inning while striking out two.
  • Drake Britton was pretty good in his first audition for a bullpen spot.  Britton worked a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
  • Gonzalez Germen had the plate jump around a bit, but he was fairly effective.  Germen worked two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while walking two, and striking out two.

Addison Russell Goes Deep Again (VIDEO)

I don’t know about you, but I could watch Addison Russell hit all day.  Russell went deep again yesterday, his 8th home run for the Smokies, and is not showing any signs of slowing down.  Russell started slow after the trade from Oakland, but is hitting .364 in his last ten with five home runs.  Tasty.
