Iowa Cubs 4-15 Final

Full Box Score

It’s definitely hit or miss for the Iowa Cubs in the early going as they were only able to register eight hits, and two runs in a 3-2 loss this afternoon.  That would have been just fine if the Cubs bullpen could have closed the door late, but poor command did them in, as it usually does late in ballgames.  The Cubs got a great effort from starter Donn Roach, but couldn’t cash in when they needed to as they were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

 At the Plate:

  • John Andreoli had another nice game, he was 1-for-4 with a double, and a walk.
  • Chris Valaika snapped out of a funk today, he was 2-for-4 with a double, his second of the season.
  • Jonathan Mota has been red-hot as of late, he continued that today, he was 2-for-4 with an RBI, he’s now hitting .462 on the season.
  • Adron Chambers, and Addison Russell each had one hit in the loss.

On the Mound:

  • Donn Roach deserved better today, he was brilliant.  Roach worked six scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out three.
  • Blake Cooper was just okay out of the pen, he worked 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, but did pick up a hold.
  • Blake Parker had nothing today, he worked 1.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit while walking three(!).
  • Drake Britton took the loss in this one, he worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on two hits while walking one.

South Bend 4-15 Final

Full Box Score

Well, that didn’t go so well.  The South Bend Cubs didn’t have much of an opportunity in this one as they trailed 9-0 by the third inning en route to a 10-7 loss.  It was nice to see the Cubs make a come back in this one, but there isn’t much you can do when you are chasing that many.  Jake Stinnett just didn’t have anything tonight, he couldn’t find the plate, and the Cubs made three errors behind him, that’s a recipe for disaster.

At the Plate:

  • Trey Martin has been doing a pretty solid job at the top of the South Bend lineup, he was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  He also had an outfield assist.
  • Gioskar Amaya went 2-for-3 with a double, and a run scored in the loss.
  • Cael Brockmeyer continued the doubles binge that he is one, he went 2-for-4 with a walk, his sixth double of the season, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Chesny Young had a solid game, he was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Jake Stinnett got the start and as I said, struggled with his command.  He worked 2.1 innings, giving up eight runs, five earned, on three hits while walking seven (see?), and striking out two.
  • Jasvir Rakkar came on in long relief and did a nice job, he worked 3.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out four.
  • David Bote, the infielder, saved the bullpen from further work in this one, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up three hits, while striking out two, go figure.

Both Tennessee, and Myrtle Beach were postponed.

South Bend 4-12 Final

Full Box Score

An odd scheduling quirk as the SB Cubs open a series with Dayton on a Sunday, minor league baseball at it’s finest.  The Cubs jumped out to a quick three run lead in the third, and by the time the inning was over the game was tied at three.  The SB Cubs pitching held Dayton down the rest of the game allowing the bats to wake up and score five times en route to a 8-3 win.

At the Plate:

  • Gleyber Torres is hitting his stride, he went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI’s, a stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Jason Volser was all over the place, he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and a stolen base.
  • Rashad Crawford had a solid game from the nine spot, he went 2-for-2 with two walks, three RBI’s, and three runs scored.

On the Mound:

  • Zach Hedges got the start and picked up the win, he worked five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, while walking one, and striking out two.

  • James Norwood was outstanding as well, he worked a scoreless inning, giving up two hits while striking out two.
  • Tommy Thorpe closed things out, he worked a scoreless inning, surrendering zero hits, while walking one, and striking out one.

Myrtle Beach 4-12 Final

Full Box Score

One night after a thrilling comeback win, the Pelicans couldn’t find any offense as they could only muster three hits in a shutout loss.  The Pelican pitching was solid, but that doesn’t mean much if you can’t score.

At the Plate:

  • Chris Denorfia, who is rehabbing from an injury, went 1-for-2 with a double.
  • Mark Zagunis was out in right field today, he went 1-for-4 in the loss.
  • Jeimer Candelario was 1-for-3 tonight, he’s now hitting .250 on the season.

On the Mound:

  • Tyler Skulina got the start, and was outstanding, he worked five innings, giving up one run on three hits while walking three, and striking out five.
  • James Pugliese had a rough go of it, he worked two innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out one.
  • Matt Brazis had a similar effort, he worked two innings, giving up two run on three hits while walking one, and striking out three.

Tennessee Smokies 4-12 Final

Full Box Score

The Smokies made some noise early on, then couldn’t push anymore runs across the plate the rest of the game.  By the second inning it was 6-1 Smokies then that was it as far as scoring runs goes.  The Braves were able to score once in the 4th, and once in the 9th to make it close but they still fell to the Smokies 6-3.

At the Plate:

  • Elliot Soto got things done at the top of the order tonight, he was 2-for-6 with a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Rob Zastryzny got the start, he worked 3.1 innings giving up two runs, one earned on three hits while walking three, and striking out five.  Unfortunately he was hit by a batted ball in the foot and had to leave the game.
  • Stephen Perakslis was outstanding, he worked 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit while walking one.
  • Michael Jensen was solid today, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking one, and sriking out one.
  • Hunter Cervenka struggled in this one, he worked 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit while walking two, and striking out two.
  • Andres Santiago earned the save by retiring one hitter, he worked a third of an inning, while walking one.

Iowa Cubs 4-12 Final

Full Box Score

Another outstanding effort from the Iowa Cubs today as they pounded Memphis 7-2 to earn a series split.  The long ball was on display all day as Addison Russell, Kris Bryant, and Jonathan Mota all went deep, dingers!  The Cubs pitching held their own and it was smooth sailing the rest of the way.

At the Plate:

  • John Andreoli did his job at the top of the order today, he went 1-for-3 with two walks, a double, and a run scored.
  • Addison Russell is on fire right now, he hit 3-for-5 with a dinger, two RBI’s, and two runs scored.  He’s now hitting .389 on the season.

  • Zac Rosscup, Armando Rivero, and Blake Parker all worked a scoreless inning in relief to close out the Redbirds.

South Bend 4-11 Final

Full Box Score

So close, the South Bend Cubs made things very interesting tonight as they scored in the 8th and 9th to push the game to extra’s.  Unfortunately they couldn’t come up with anything else, and Bowling Green tallied twice in the 12th to win 7-5, South Bend’s fist loss of 2015.

At the Plate:

  • Charcer Burks was great out of the lead-off spot, he went 2-for-6 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored.
  • Jeffrey Baez is doing great things at the plate, he was 2-for-4 with two doubles in the loss.  He also had an outfield assist, threw a runner out at the plate.
  • Gleyber Torres broke out tonight, he’s 18.  He went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.

On the Mound:

  • Erick Leal got the start tonight, and was knocked around a bit, didn’t get much help behind him, though.  He worked five innings, giving up four runs, two earned on eight hits while walking two, and striking out three.
  • Jordan Minch worked a scoreless inning in relief, he did walk two, but escaped the trouble.
  • Ryan McNeil was brilliant tonight, he worked three innings, giving up one run, unearned on one hit while striking out five.
  • Francisco Carrillo got the loss, and only gave up one hit, he worked three innings, giving up two runs on one hit while striking out one.

Myrtle Beach 4-11 Final

Full Box Score

What a thrilling walk-off win for the Pelicans!  All hope looked lost when Wilmington scored twice in the top of the tenth, but the Pelicans surged back to score three times in their half of the tenth to win it.  Some really good performances from Pelican pitching today, kept them in it all night long.

At the Plate:

  • Jeimer Candelario had the big day for the Pelicans, he was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Victor Caratini had a huge hit as well, he finished the night 1-for-4 with two RBI’s, and a walk.
  • Shawon Dunston Jr. continued his hot start, he went 2-for-4 in the win, he’s now hitting .400 on the season.

On the Mound:

  • Paul Blackburn made his 2015 debut, and was very good.  He worked five innings, giving up one run on four hits while walking one, and striking out six.
  • Juan Paniagua was even better, he worked a perfect three innings, no hits, runs, or walks while striking out six.
  • Starling Peralta picked up the win, he worked two innings, giving up two runs on four hits while walking one, and striking out five.  That’s right, the Pelicans struck out 17 guys, wow.

Tennessee Smokies 4-11 Final

Full Box Score

Sloppy one tonight as the Smokies committed five errors in a 6-2 loss to the Braves.  Kyle Schwarber launched his first home run of the season, an absolute blast, and things were looking good early.  But a six run seventh for the Braves sealed the Smokie’s fate as they fall to 1-2 on the season.

At the Plate:

  • Pin-Chieh Chen knocked in one of the runs tonight, he finished 1-for-4 with said RBI in the loss.
  • Kyle Schwarber was 2-for-4 with a dinger, an RBI, and a run scored.  Schwarber also gunned down a runner trying to steal second, good stuff.
  • Ryan Dent had a solid game, he went 1-for-2 with a walk, and was one of the few players without an error.
  • Christian Villanueva, and Dan Vogelbach each had one hit tonight.

On the Mound:

  • Felix Pena got the start for the Smokies and was outstanding, he worked six scoreless innings, giving up three hits while walking one, and striking out two.

Iowa Cubs 4-11 Final

Full Box Score

So the Iowa Cubs struggled in the first two games of the season, note to self, don’t anger the Iowa Cubs.  Thirteen runs, and sixteen hits later the Iowa Cubs put their offensive struggles in the rear view mirror.  All eight position players that started had at least one hit, six players had at least two RBI’s, tasty.

At the Plate:  (Take a seat, just going to list them)

  • Adron Chambers was 2-for-5 with two doubles, a walk, two RBI’s, and three runs scored.
  • Addison Russell was 1-for-5 with a walk, and two runs scored.
  • Kris Bryant was 3-for-4 with a dinger, a walk, three RBI’s, a double, and three runs scored.

  • Rafael Lopez was 1-for-4 with a walk, two RBI’s, a double, and a stolen base.
  • Mike Baxter was 2-for-5 with a run scored.

I’m tired.

On the Mound:

  • Eric Jokisch got the start but couldn’t work deep enough for the win, he worked 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits while walking three.
  • Blake Cooper was really good out of the pen to get the win, he worked 2.1 scoreless innings, surrendering no hits while striking out four.
  • Gonzalez Germen, and Joe Ortiz each worked a scoreless inning  in relief.

FRIDAY APRIL 10, 2015

South Bend 4-10 Final

Full Box Score

The South Bend Cubs moved to 2-0 on the young season tonight as 2014 15th round draft pick Jeremy Null was brilliant.  Null got the start and worked five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits while striking out seven, not a single walk.  That was more than enough for the SB Cubs offense as they pounded out ten hits en route to a 7-4 victory over Bowling Green.

At the Plate:

  • Trey Martin provided the production from the top of the order in this one, he was 1-for-5 with three RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Chesny Young has had a good start to the season, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the victory.
  • Jeffrey Baez was solid yet again tonight, he went 2-for-4, and is now hitting .375 on the season.
  • Jesse Hodges and the bottom of the order were noticeable in this one, Hodges went 2-for-4 with a double, and a run scored.
  • Charcer Burks, and Rashad Crawford each had a hit, and a walk in the eight and ninth spots respectively.

On the Mound:

  • The pen didn’t fair as well as Null in this one, Jasvir Rakkar worked two innings, giving up two runs, one earned on five hits while striking out one.
  • Tommy Thorpe closed things down, he worked two innings, giving up two runs on three hits while walking one, and striking out three.

Myrtle Beach 4-10 Final

Full Box Score

Not a whole lot went right for the Pelicans tonight as they fell behind Wilmington 6-0 in the fourth on their way to an 8-3 loss.  If was a rough night on the mound for Pelicans starter Daury Torrez, he could only get through 4.2 innings as he picked up his first loss of the season.

At the Plate:

  • Jacob Hannemann is doing good things early on, he was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a stolen base.

On the Mound:

  • Daury Torrez got knocked around in this one, he worked 4.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits while walking one, and striking out five.

  • Tayler Scott finished this one off, he worked one scoreless inning, giving up one hit while striking out two.

Tennessee Smokies 4-10 Final

Full Box Score

A weird one in Mississippi as the Smokies jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to see it vanish in an 8-7 loss.  The Smokies attempted to mount a comeback in the 8th, but could only close the gap to one run.  A tough night for the Smokies pitchers as the Braves worked six walks, and registered nine hits.

  • Pin-Chieh Chen provided some production at the top, he was 1-for-4 with a walk, and two RBI’s.

  • Stephen Bruno came off the bench to have a good game, he went 2-for-2 with a run scored.

On the Mound:

Iowa Cubs 4-10 Final

 Full Box Score

It hasn’t been the start that the Iowa Cubs, and Cubs fans were expecting.  For the second straight night the Memphis Redbirds took it to Iowa, it was especially bad tonight as Iowa trailed 7-0 after two.  Some of the big league club’s struggles are rubbing off on Iowa as they can’t seem to find any offense yet.

At the Plate:

  • Junior Lake is displaying his new approach, he was 1-for-3 with a walk in the loss.
  • Addison Russell is one guy that is swinging it well, he went 1-for-4 with a double, he’s hitting .375 so far this season.
  • Chris Valaika, Mike Baxter, and Jonathan Mota were the only other I-Cubs to register a base hit, one each.

On the Mound:

  • Carlos Pimentel didn’t have it tonight, he worked 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs, five earned while walking four, and striking out five.
  • Jeffry Antigua was okay out of the pen, he worked 2.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits while walking one, and striking out two.
  • Zac Rosscup, and Blake Parker were able to stop the bleeding as each guy worked a scoreless inning.

South Bend 4-9 Final (1)

Full Box Score

So far so good as the South Bend Cubs make their Cubs affiliate debut with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Bowling Green.  Jake Stinnett got the start for South Bend and was pretty good, he worked five innings, giving up one run on three hits, while walking two, and striking out four.  The game was very much in doubt until Cael Brockmeyer crushed a walk-off dinger to the delight of the South Bend faithful.

At the plate:

  • Jeffrey Baez went 1-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Cael Brockmeyer had a huge night, he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a dinger, an RBI, and a run scored.

On the mound:

  • Ryan Williams came on in relief of Stinnett and was spotless, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out one.
  • James Farris was equally as good and picked up the win, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while walking two, and striking out four.

Myrtle Beach 4-9 Final (1)

Full Box Score

Talk about a grand entrance to the Cubs organization.  The Myrtle Beach Pelicans exploded this evening, not literally, putting up nine runs on fifteen hits in the victory.  Seven of the nine Pelican hitters had hits, five of them had a multi-hit game.  Duane Underwood was solid, but he could have been throwing underhand and would have picked up the win, but he was really good.

At the plate:

  • Jacob Hannemann did his job at the top of the order, he went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and a run scored.
  • The other Jacob was pretty good too, Jacob Rogers went 3-for-4 with a double, a dinger, two RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Victor Caratini, thanks Braves.  Caratini was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win.
  • Both Shawon Dunston Jr., and Daniel Lockhart each had a triple in the win.
  • Carlos Penalver was brilliant as a second lead-off man of sorts from the nine spot, he was 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.

On the mound:

  • Duane Underwood was steady as usual in this one, he worked five innings, giving up one run, unearned, while walking two, and striking out five.
  • Jonathan Martinez took over and tossed a scoreless inning, giving up one hit while striking out one.
  • James Pugliese was outstanding, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out one.
  • Starling Peralta cleaned things up in a mop up role, he worked a scoreless inning, giving up one hit while striking out two.

Tennessee Smokies 4-9 Final

Full Box Score

The Smokies were extremely efficient in this one as they managed to score seven times on just seven hits, not terribly easy to do.  You know what makes it much easy?  Taking walks, the Smokies earned six walks in the win, that’s how you play winning baseball.  The one-two punch of Corey Black, and C.J. Edwards shut the door on the Braves, Black started, and Edwards came out of the pen to pick up a hold.

At the Plate:

  • Albert Almora got things off on the right foot, he went 1-for-4 with a walk, and two runs…. wait, a walk!!?  I like it.
  • Kyle Schwarber gave Smokies fans a glimpse of what he beings to the table, he was 1-for-3 with two walks, a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Dan Vogelbach also joined the fun, he was 1-for-3 with a walk, and an RBI in the win.

On the Mound:

  • Corey Black got the start and picked up the win, he worked five innings, giving up one run on four hits, while walking three, and striking out four.
  • C.J. Edwards made his debut out of the pen tonight, and he was okay, he worked 2.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, while walking two, and striking out two.
  • Hunter Cervenka was tasked with shutting this one done, and that’s exactly what he did, Cervenka worked 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out two.

Iowa Cubs 4-9 Final (1)

Full Box Score

This was a tough one, the excitement of opening day, and a really good lineup was erased this morning when we found out that Javier Baez‘s sister Noely had passed away, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Javy.  To the game, the Cubs were able to create some two out magic in the third as they scored four times to take a 4-2 lead, it was short-lived however.  Memphis scored twice in the fifth, and then three times in the seventh en route to a 7-4 victory.

At the plate:

  • Addison Russell got off to a great start tonight, he was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Kris Bryant didn’t hit a dinger, let that sink in, he finished the night 1-for-4 with an RBI, and a stolen base.
  • Junior Lake was productive, he went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the loss.

On the mound:

  • Donn Roach got the start, and found too many Redbird bats, he worked 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on ten hits while walking one, and striking out two.
  • Drake Britton was handed the loss in this one, he worked 1.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits, while striking out one.
  • Armando Rivero didn’t get much work in this one, he worked a third of an inning, giving up one run on one hit.
  • Gonzalez Germen did some solid work out of the pen, he worked a scoreless inning, he walked one, and struck out one.

Iowa Cubs Roster is Set

Iowa Header

The Iowa Cubs are dangerous team as they are the home for Kris BryantAddison Russell, and Javier Baez to start the 2015 season.  Bryant was expected, but Baez is a little bit of a surprise as many people thought that he would be the starting second baseman for the big league club to start the year.  Chicago’s loss is Iowa’s gain as they will gladly host Javier Baez for however long it will take, hopefully he can refine his approach and get out of there quickly, no offense Iowa.

Pitchers:

Donn Roach (RHP)
Carlos Pimentel (RHP)
Eric Jokisch (LHP)
Barret Loux (RHP)
Yoanner Negrin (RHP)
Blake Parker (RHP)
Brian Schlitter (RHP)
Zac Rosscup (LHP)
Blake Cooper (RHP)
Drake Britton (LHP)
Gonzalez Germen (RHP)
Joseph Ortiz (LHP)
Armando Rivero (RHP)

Infielders:

Kris Bryant
Addison Russell

Players to watch?  Do I really have to type out Kris Bryant’s name again, oops, I did.  Along with Bryant, Baez, and Addison Russell are the ones to watch, it’s the best infield in AAA, and might be the bottom 20 in the Majors.

Spring Fever – March 24, 2015 (Cubs Lineup, Broadcast Info)

edwinjacksoncubsslide

We are twelve short days away from real Cubs baseball, which means that important decisions are looming for this coaching staff.  Edwin Jackson figures to be involved in one of those decisions, in a good way or bad, depending on how you look at it.  Joe Maddon has talked about thinking out of the box when it comes to Jackson by possibly piggybacking Travis Wood and Jackson in the 5th spot.  I’m not a huge fan of that, but if both guys prove worthy of a roster spot then there aren’t many more options that don’t involve the Cubs eating a lot of money.  E-Jax gets the ball today for the Cubs as they take on the A’s at 3:05 PM CST, the game can be heard on cubs.com, no TV.  It’s unfortunate that the game is not on because the lineup is tasty today.

1. Fowler – CF
2. Lake – LF
3. Soler – RF
4. Rizzo – 1B
5. Bryant – 3B
6. Montero – C
7. Baez – 2B
8. Russell – SS
9. Jackson – SP

Still no Starlin Castro as he is working back from a groin issue.

Bryant Powers Cubs to Wild Win

chc-sea-3-21

Full Box Score

At this point I wonder if baseball is even hard for Kris Bryant, because it doesn’t look like it is.  Another day, another two dinger game for Bryant as he finished the day 2-for-2 with said two dingers, a walk, and FIVE RBI, goodness.  The rest of the Cubs followed Bryant’s lead as they pounded out sixteen hits en route to scoring twelve runs to beat the Mariners 12-10.  Lost in the Bryant madness is the spring that Addison Russell is having, Russell went 2-for-3 with his first homer of the spring, a run scored, and two RBI, he’s now hitting .409 on the spring.  Last year the Cubs cracked their fair share of homers, this spring they have hit 28 which leads all of baseball, that includes the four they hit today (Bryant, Russell, Castillo, Bryant).  After a horrendous 1-8-1 start the Cubs are now 9-10-1, playing much better baseball, and getting results.
