Lester Plays Stopper as Cubs Hang On

Cubs 5-6

Full Box Score

It’s only May 6th, feeling okay?  This series has been a roller coaster of emotions, and tonight we can all breathe a little easier as the Cubs just barely hung on to beat the Cardinals 6-5.  Both teams scored in alternating innings until the eighth when they both pushed across a run.  Jon Lester didn’t do himself any favors as he made an error which led to an unearned run, which was not the only unearned run of the night.  The Cardinals got two more after a two out error by Addison Russell, but Lester battled all night.  The newest ace of the Cubs was able to work through seven strong innings before watching the bullpen shut the door, I wouldn’t say they slammed it, they shut it quietly.  Nice to be out from under that losing streak, and the Cubs can now go for the split tomorrow afternoon.

At the Plate:

  • Chris Coghlan was plugged into the two hole tonight, he did his job by getting on base, he didn’t have any hits but he walked twice.
  • Anthony Rizzo is hunting down the MVP, he was 2-for-4 with his fifth dinger of the year, three RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Kris Bryant continues to produce, he was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Jorge Soler seems to be coming out of his slump, he was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
  • Dexter Fowler, Starlin Castro, David Ross, and Addison Russell all chipped in with a hit.

On the Mound:

  • Jon Lester was gritty tonight, he worked seven innings, giving up four runs, one earned, on seven hits while walking two, and striking out six.
  • Pedro Strop had another shaky outing, he worked one inning, giving up one run on one hit while walking one.
  • Hector Rondon walked the tightrope as well, he worked a scoreless ninth for his sixth save of the year.  He surrendered one hit while walking one, and getting one huge strikeout.

Two Out Magic Propels Cubs to Another Win

Cubs Final 4-28

Full Box Score

The Cubs have all of a sudden found some clutch hitting, and that is leading to some exciting baseball, and wins on the Northside.  One night after scoring four times with two outs, the Cubs pushed six across after two outs for good measure.  Going back to Sunday the Cubs have had thirteen two out RBI’s, THIRTEEN.  So it really is not a surprise that the Cubs have won four straight games, clutch is good, clutch is productive.  Travis Wood didn’t need much help in this one as he picked up his second win of the season, he was stellar over seven innings.  The Cubs will go for the sweep tomorrow night against Pittsburgh’s ace, Gerrit Cole.

At the Plate:

  • Dexter Fowler is scorching hot right now, he went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s, and a stolen base.
  • Kris Bryant came up with another big hit tonight, he was 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI.
  • Starlin Castro, have a night, he was 3-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored.
  • Junior Lake made a splash (heh) in his return, he was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Welington Castillo, Chris Coghlan, and Addison Russell all had one hit in the win.  Russell added an RBI, a walk, and a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Travis Wood got the start, and picked up his second win of the year.  Wood worked seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits while walking none, and striking out nine.
  • Zac Rosscup and Jason Motte each worked a scoreless inning to secure the win.

Fun fact, the Cubs had five stolen bases on the night, they now have twenty-five on the year, that leads all of baseball.

Cubs Win Third Straight Behind Dominant Hammel

Cubs Final 4-27

Full Box Score

Well, that was fast, under two and a half hours roughly.  Jason Hammel was outstanding tonight as he completely shut down the Pirates from the first pitch as the Cubs took the series opener, 4-0.  Hammel went eight shutout innings, and was never really in trouble as he only allowed four base runners, all hits, no walks.  The Cubs got their runs from likely sources, Anthony Rizzo drove in two runs as did Kris Bryant.  All four runs were driven in with two outs, you can’t really measure how important those hits are.  With the shutout win the Cubs have now won three straight, and have improved to 11-7 on the year, mighty impressive.

At the Plate:

  • Dexter Fowler got things going from the lead-off spot again, he was 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Jorge Soler broke out of his recent slump, he was 2-for-4 with a double, and a run scored.
  • Anthony Rizzo continues to be a machine, he was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, two RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Kris Bryant is racking up the RBI’s, he was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s in this one, and he has knocked in nine so far this year.
  • Miguel Montero, Starlin Castro, and Addison Russell all had one hit in the win.

On the Mound:

  • Hammel Time!  Jason Hammel was stellar, he worked eight shutout innings, giving up four hits, he didn’t walk anybody, and struck out seven.
  • Pedro Strop shut the door in an uneventful ninth, he worked a scoreless inning while striking out one.

Pirates @ Cubs – Series Preview (April 27 – April 29, 2015)

Series Preview HOME Pirates

Both the Cubs and Pirates head into a three game series on the Northside with some momentum.  The Cubs are coming off an exciting, rain shortened series in Cincinnati where they took both games, one of which was another come back victory.  After taking the last two games of the series against the Cubs, the Pirates swept the Diamondbacks this weekend and have won their last five games.  It’s a battle for second place as the Cubs (10-7) and the Pirates (11–8) are both two games back of the Cardinals in the Central.

Broadcast Information:

Pitching Matchups:

Who is Hot:

  • Pirates:  Noted Cub killer Neil Walker is apparently not just killing the Cubs lately, he’s scorching hot.  Over his last seven games, the Pirates second baseman is hitting .393 (11-for-28) with five doubles, and five RBI’s.
  • Cubs:  There are a lot of good first basemen in the National League, Anthony Rizzo might be the best.  Over his last seven games, Rizzo is hitting .455 (10-for-22) with two doubles, a dinger, two RBI’s, four walks, and one strikeout.

Who is Not:

  • Pirates:  I’m not sure I want to mention this, because you know it won’t last.  Andrew McCutchen is hitting .143 (3-for-21) over his last seven games with one double, and seven strikeouts.
  • Cubs:  It’s probably not easy to be a 21 year old in the Majors, Addison Russell is proving that.  In his first five games he’s hitting .136 (3-for-22) with two doubles, four RBI’s, and twelve strikeouts.

About Last Night (Cubs Highlights)

Rizzo

Another night, and another close game, what else is new.  Jon Lester turned in his best start of 2015, his only issue was Billy Hamilton who reached base twice, stole three bases, and scored twice.  Other than that, Lester was brilliant as he struck out ten in his six innings of work.  The Cubs were paced offensively by an Anthony Rizzo two run dinger, and a huge game tying solo shot by Chris Coghlan in the seventh.  After watching Jason Motte get out of bases loaded trouble in the bottom of the tenth, Jonathan Herrera came up with a big hit in the eleventh.  Herrera lined a base hit to right which scored Rizzo, got Bryant to third, and Herrera took second on the throw.  Both of those guys scored on a bases loaded David Ross double which put this one out of reach.

Rizzo’s two run blast.

Addison Russell with a web gem.

Cubs @ Pirates – Series Preview (April 20 – April 23, 2015)

Series Preview ROAD Pirates

After having eight of their first eleven games at home the time has come for the Cubs to hit the road, and face some stiff NL Central competition.  Tonight’s game in Pittsburgh starts a seven game road trip that will see the Cubs battle the Pirates for four, then head to Cincinnati for three.  The Pirates are playing solid baseball right now as they have won three straight games, and sit a half game behind the Cubs for second place in the Central.  The Cubs are coming off a tough series loss to the Padres, their first of the season.  All three games could have went the Cubs way, but a burnt out bullpen, short starts, and lack of clutch hitting came back to bite them.

Broadcast Information:

Pitching Matchups:

Who is Hot:

  • Pirates:  After a slow start, and a big new contract, Josh Harrison is starting to heat up at the plate.  He is hitting .292 (7-for-24) over his last seven with a double, homer, and two RBI’s.
  • Cubs:  Anthony Rizzo was getting on base earlier in the year but wasn’t seeing too many hits dropping, that is changing.  Rizzo is hitting .318 (7-for-22) over his last six games with a home run, three RBI’s, a double, and SIX walks.

Who is Not:

  • Pirates:  After a productive 2014, Jordy Mercer has come out of the gate struggling.  Mercer is hitting just .118 (2-for-17) over his last seven games with only one walk, two strikeouts, and no runs scored.
  • Cubs:  Second base is an issue for the Cubs right now, as both Jonathan Herrera, and Arismendy Alcantara are scuffling.  Herrera is hitting just .158 (3-for-19) over his last six games, while Alcantara comes in at a .143 (2-for-14) clip, with six strikeouts.

Iowa Cubs 4-15 Final

Full Box Score

It’s definitely hit or miss for the Iowa Cubs in the early going as they were only able to register eight hits, and two runs in a 3-2 loss this afternoon.  That would have been just fine if the Cubs bullpen could have closed the door late, but poor command did them in, as it usually does late in ballgames.  The Cubs got a great effort from starter Donn Roach, but couldn’t cash in when they needed to as they were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

 At the Plate:

  • John Andreoli had another nice game, he was 1-for-4 with a double, and a walk.
  • Chris Valaika snapped out of a funk today, he was 2-for-4 with a double, his second of the season.
  • Jonathan Mota has been red-hot as of late, he continued that today, he was 2-for-4 with an RBI, he’s now hitting .462 on the season.
  • Adron Chambers, and Addison Russell each had one hit in the loss.

On the Mound:

  • Donn Roach deserved better today, he was brilliant.  Roach worked six scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out three.
  • Blake Cooper was just okay out of the pen, he worked 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, but did pick up a hold.
  • Blake Parker had nothing today, he worked 1.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit while walking three(!).
  • Drake Britton took the loss in this one, he worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on two hits while walking one.

South Bend 4-15 Final

Full Box Score

Well, that didn’t go so well.  The South Bend Cubs didn’t have much of an opportunity in this one as they trailed 9-0 by the third inning en route to a 10-7 loss.  It was nice to see the Cubs make a come back in this one, but there isn’t much you can do when you are chasing that many.  Jake Stinnett just didn’t have anything tonight, he couldn’t find the plate, and the Cubs made three errors behind him, that’s a recipe for disaster.

At the Plate:

  • Trey Martin has been doing a pretty solid job at the top of the South Bend lineup, he was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  He also had an outfield assist.
  • Gioskar Amaya went 2-for-3 with a double, and a run scored in the loss.
  • Cael Brockmeyer continued the doubles binge that he is one, he went 2-for-4 with a walk, his sixth double of the season, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Chesny Young had a solid game, he was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Jake Stinnett got the start and as I said, struggled with his command.  He worked 2.1 innings, giving up eight runs, five earned, on three hits while walking seven (see?), and striking out two.
  • Jasvir Rakkar came on in long relief and did a nice job, he worked 3.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out four.
  • David Bote, the infielder, saved the bullpen from further work in this one, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up three hits, while striking out two, go figure.

Both Tennessee, and Myrtle Beach were postponed.
