Wood Knocked Around as Cubs Streak Ends at Four

It was one of those nights where you would expect to see a shoot-out, and that’s what happened tonight at Wrigley. Couple Travis Wood’s poor command with the 100 degree heat index and it was a recipe for disaster. The Marlins scored three runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead. Wood ended his night after 4.2 innings giving up eight runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out six. The Cubs tried to get back in the game by getting single runs in the 5th and 6th to make it 8-2. With the game seemingly over in the 8th, the Cubs tried to mount a rally. The tying run was on deck when Anthony Rizzo grounded into an inning ending double play and that is as close as the Cubs would get in a 9-5 loss. David DeJesus, Starlin Castro, Anthony Rizzo, Luis Valbuena, and Jeff Baker who wasn’t even starting the game, all came through with two hits in the loss. It’s not like the Cubs didn’t have their chances in this one. They scored five runs in the loss but finished the night 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 guys on base. I guess the Cubs were bound to have a bad one here as they have been so good as of late, and it was probably time to get Dolis and Asencio into a game, so forget this one and move on. Full box score, and highlights after the jump.
July 17 – 19, 2012; vs. Marlins – Series Preview

The hottest team in the majors since June 25th? That’s right, the Cubs. The record says so, the Cubs are 12-4 since June 25th and are clicking on all cylinders as they welcome the Miami Marlins to town. Or should I say they welcome the circus to town as Tuesday will mark the return of Ozzie Guillen, Mark Buehrle, and Carlos Zambrano to Chicago. Guillen had an opportunity to set his rotation for this series and he chose to have Zambrano watch all three games from the bench. Of course I guess that could be good for all parties involved. The Cubs only care about one thing, and that’s winning, which is what they have been doing as they come into this series on the heels of a three game sweep over the Diamondbacks. A big reason for the success has been the Cubs starters who have had an ERA under two over the last five games and have the opportunity to continue that dominance as they face a scuffling Marlins offense (14th in runs scored in the NL). The improved lineup has been another big reason for the Cubs turnaround, and there’s no reason to expect them to slow down against a Marlins staff that is ranked 11th in the NL in team ERA.
