Minor Matters – May 14, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – The Cubs had nothing going for them in this one as they could only manage to score once on seven hits while being routed by the Aces 11-1. Brian Bogusevic continues to hit even if the rest of his team doesn’t, he was 2-for-4 with a double, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .373 on the season. Brad Nelson has been on fire as of late, he was 2-for-4 with a double, and an RBI, he has his average all the way up to .286 on the season. Ian Stewart got a rare start and had a good day, he was 1-for-3 with a walk, and a double, much better approach.
On The Mound – Yuck. Barret Loux got the start and was torn apart, he went 3.1 innings giving up seven runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out two, his record dropped to 2-2 with the loss. Yoanner Negrin came on in relief and really didn’t help his cause as he made two errors. Negrin worked 2.2 innings giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking one and striking out three. Hisanori Takahashi came on and stopped the bleeding as he worked a scoreless inning. Casey Coleman was roughed up a bit as he worked an inning giving up one run on three hits while striking out one.
At The Plate – Another thrilling win for the Smokies after it looked like to could be a crushing loss. The Smokies gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game but recaptured the lead in the tenth and hung on to win 3-2. Matt Szczur is rolling right now, and has been solid all year, he was 3-for-5 with three singles, he is now hitting .302 on the season. Arismendy Alcantara was 1-for-5 with two RBI’s, that one hit was a two out drag bunt base hit that scored the winning run in the tenth. Christian Villanueva was 2-for-3 with his second home run of the season, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored, he’s hitting .250 on the season and .303 over his last ten games.
On The Mound – Unfortunately Alberto Cabrera did not factor in the decision as he deserved a win tonight, he was electric. Cabrera went seven innings giving up one run on five hits while walking one and striking out seven. Marcus Hatley worked a scoreless inning out of the pen giving up one hit while striking out one. The usually reliable Zach Rosscup hit a speed bump in this one as he blew the save giving up on run on two hits while walking one in the ninth, but ended up getting the win. Frank Batista was solid in the tenth inning to earn his fourth save of the season he worked a scoreless inning while striking out one.
At The Plate – Once again the D-Cubs couldn’t do anything offensively and suffered another loss to a team that they probably should beat. The D-Cubs could only manage four hits all night, and were 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position, they scored twice. Javier Baez, John Andreoli, Dustin Geiger, and Chad Noble had the hits in this one, all singles except for a Geiger double. Jorge Soler, and Chad Noble recorded the RBI’s in the loss.
On The Mound - Ben Wells rebounded from his last outing with a solid performance going 5.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four. Jeffrey Lorick came on in relief and allowed an inherited runner to score working two-thirds of an inning giving up one hit. Eduardo Figueroa took the loss in this one as he worked one inning giving up two runs on two hits while walking two. Austin Reed did a great job out of the pen going two scoreless innings giving up two hits while walking one.
At The Plate – The Cougars grabbed an early lead in this one, but it was all Chiefs from there on out as they easily dispatched Kane County 8-4. Gioskar Amaya was 1-for-2 with two walks, and a run scored, he seems to be in the middle of everything lately. Rock Shoulders, who has struggled a bit as of late, that’s going to happen when you hit .400 for a month, he was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI’s, and a run scored. Willson Contreras was 2-for-2 with his fifth home run of the season, stolen base, an RBI, and a run scored. The Cougars didn’t really help their own cause in the field as they made three errors in the loss.
On The Mound - Ian Dickson got the start and didn’t last very long but wasn’t bad at all, he went four innings giving up two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four. Justin Amlung took over and ended up taking the loss, his first of the season. Amlung worked three innings giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out two. Steve Perakslis tossed two innings giving up two runs on two hits while walking one.

Minor Matters – May 8, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – A roller coaster game for the Cubs in this one as they held a 4-0 lead only to lose it, then an 8-4 lead only to see the Sky Sox get within two, luckily Iowa hung on for the victory. Alberto Gonzalez had a huge day at the plate going 4-for-5 with a walk, a double, and an RBI. Brian Bogusevic was 2-for-5 with a walk, his second home run of the season, one RBI, and two runs scored. Brad Nelson was 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Darnell McDonald was 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI’s, a stolen base, and a run scored. J.C. Boscan is having a great season so far, he was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, he’s now hitting .344 on the year. Iowa probably could have scored more than eight runs as they pounded out sixteen hits but were 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
On The Mound – A mixed bag for the Iowa pitching on this night, but they did just enough. Barret Loux got the start and didn’t have it as he went four innings giving up four runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four. Esmailin Caridad was really good out of the pen and earned the win, he went two scoreless innings while walking one and striking out one. Hisanori Takahashi was roughed up, he went 1.2 innings giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three. Blake Parker was solid again as he earned his fourth save, he went 1.1 scoreless innings while walking one and striking out one.
At The Plate – Another wild one in Tennessee as the Smokies trailed 6-0 after one inning, then 9-6 heading to the bottom of the ninth. The Smokies tied it in the ninth with three runs, then they trailed 11-9 heading to the bottom of the tenth, they tied it again with two in the tenth. Unfortunately they couldn’t come back to tie it a fourth time and lost 12-11 in fourteen innings. The Smokies pounded out fifteen hits in this one, drew seven walks, and made four costly errors. Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-5 with two walks, a double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Ty Wright was 1-for-3 with two walks, a double, and three RBI’s. Rubi Silva was 2-for-7 with his fifth home run of the season, three RBI’s and a run scored. Rafael Lopez was 3-for-5 with two walks, a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Tim Torres was 2-for-7 with his first home run of the season, two RBI’s, and two runs scored.
On The Mound – I wouldn’t say that the Smokies pitchers were bad, they just didn’t get a lot of help from their defense. Dallas Beeler got the start and struggled a bit with his command. Beeler went 4.2 innings giving up seven runs, four earned, on four hits while walking three and striking out four. Brian Schlitter was first out of the pen and worked 1.1 innings giving up one run, unearned, on two hits. Kyuji Fujikawa was excellent in what was probably his last rehab outing, he went two scoreless innings giving up a single base hit. Frank Batista was touched up, which is rare, he worked two innings giving up three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one. Zach Rosscup was brilliant late in this one, he tossed three scoreless innings giving up two hits while striking out three. Marcus Hatley took the loss in this one, he worked one inning giving up one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one.
At The Plate - Daytona put up plenty of fight in this one, they just can’t figure out a way to beat St. Lucie. The D-Cubs trailed 5-3 in the eight and managed to tie things up with two in the eighth only to lose 6-5 in the ten innings. Tim Saunders was 2-for-5 with a triple, and two runs scored. Jorge Soler has responded from his benching in a big way, he was 3-for-4 with two doubles, his fifth home run of the season, a walk, two RBI’s, and two runs scored. Dustin Geiger was 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and two RBI’s in the loss.
On The Mound - Austin Kirk has struggled his last couple times out, he worked five innings giving up nine hits while walking one and striking out four. Eduardo Figueroa worked two scoreless innings out of the pen while striking out three. Luis Liria took the loss as he went 2.2 innings giving up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out three.
At The Plate – The Cougars couldn’t get anything going at the plate in this one, and they were undone by one bad inning as Burlington scored four times in the fourth en route to a 4-0 victory. Dan Vogelbach was 1-for-4 with a double, he’s now hitting .297 on the season. Bijan Rademacher has been red-hot and it continued in this one as he was 2-for-2 with a walk, he’s now hitting .371 on the season and .412 in his last ten games.
On The Mound – Pierce Johnson only had one bad inning but it was enough for his second loss of the season. Johnson worked four innings giving up four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five. Justin Amlung was really good out of the pen going two scoreless innings while walking one and striking out two. Matt Iannazzo was solid as well going two scoreless innings giving up one hit while walking one.

Minor Matters – April 25, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Reports)
At The Plate – A huge first inning from Iowa was all they needed as they scored six times en route to a 9-3 victory over Omaha. Brent Lillibridge had an outstanding game going 4-for-5 with a walk, and two RBI’s. Ryan Sweeney was also 4-for-5, he was a lot more productive though. Sweeney had a walk, a home run, a triple, four RBI’s, and two runs scored in the win. Darnell McDonald was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Edwin Maysonet was 2-for-4 with a walk, a triple, and an RBI.
On The Mound – Barret Loux got the start and struggled with command, and was wild in the strike zone but managed to pitch around trouble. He was able to go 4.2 innings giving up three runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three. Esmailin Caridad did a fine job out of the bullpen and earned the win going 2.1 scoreless innings while walking two and striking out three. Cory Wade and Rafael Dolis struggled but managed to each have a scoreless appearance. Dolis worked 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the season while walking two and striking out two.
***
At The Plate – The Smokies are playing good baseball, and if not for a few blown saves recently could be on a real impressive winning streak. It was the Ronald Torreyes show for the Smokies, he was 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a triple, and a run scored from the lead-off spot. Only three other Smokies registered hits in this one, but it was enough. Rafael Lopez and Jae-Hoon Ha recorded the RBI’s with Ha going 1-for-4, and Lopez going 1-for-3 with a double.
On The Mound – Dallas Beeler is dealing right now, and last night was no exception. Beeler went seven scoreless innings giving up seven hits while walking one and striking out two. Zach Rosscup found some trouble out of the pen but was able to hold the lead, he gave up one run on one hit while walking one in one inning of work. Brian Schlitter worked a stress free ninth inning for his first save of the season, he has yet to give up an earned run this year.
***
At The Plate – Daytona jumped out early in this one and never looked back as they pounded out twelve hits and scored five runs to beat the Flying Tigers…Flying Tigers! 5-3. Every player in the Daytona starting lineup had at least one hit. Javier Baez is slowly but surely turning around his slow start, he was 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season with an RBI, and a run scored. Timothy Saunders was 1-for-4 with a big triple, and two RBI’s in the win. Chad Noble was 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Anthony Giansanti stayed hot since his return going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
On The Mound – Zach Cates got the start and the win as he pitched a solid game. Cates worked five scoreless innings giving up four hits while walking one and striking out four. Yeiper Castillo did a solid job out of the pen tossing a scoreless inning. Austin Reed continues to get beat up, he gave up three runs on three hits while walking three in one inning of work. David Cales was outstanding to earn his first save of the year, he went two scoreless innings while walking two and striking out four.
***
At The Plate - A late rally wasn’t enough for the Cougars as they fell to the Tin Caps 6-4 after trailing 6-1 in the third inning. The Cougars approach was fantastic in this one, they just couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it. They had eight hits, walked five times, and only struck out four times, unfortunately they came up just short. Rock Shoulders continues to hit, he was 1-for-3 with a walk, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .406 on the season. Marco Hernandez was also 1-for-3 with a walk in the loss. Bijan Rademacher was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .314 on the season.
On The Mound – Lendy Castillo ran into trouble in one inning and that was enough for him to suffer his first loss of the season. Castillo worked six innings giving up six runs, five earned, on eight hits while walking none and striking out three. Both Justin Amlung and Steve Perakslis worked scoreless innings out of the pen to keep the Cougars in this one.

Minor Matters – April 19, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate - The Cubs didn’t do much at the plate in this one, but didn’t need to, as the two runs they got in the first were plenty on their way to a 5-o victory. Logan Watkins had a solid day at the top of the lineup going 2-for-5 with a run scored. Ian Stewart, who is trying to make his way back to the big club was 0-for-2 but did draw two walks and scored a run. Brian Bogusevic was 1-for-2 with two walks, a double and a run scored in the win.
On The Mound - Barret Loux was outstanding in this one as he earned his second win of the season. Loux went five scoreless innings giving up three hits while walking one and striking out six. Casey Coleman, Zach Putnam, Rafael Dolis, and Blake Parker all worked scoreless innings to close the door on Nashville.
At The Plate - The D-Cubs never really had a chance in this one as they fell behind 6-0 in the first and could never catch up. Jorge Soler had another solid game going 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .414 on the season. Dustin Geiger continues to pad his stats going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, he now has fifteen RBI’s in just fourteen games. Chad Noble was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the loss.
On The Mound - Zach Cates didn’t have it tonight, and that might be putting it nicely. He could only last two-thirds of an inning giving up six runs on three hits while walking three and striking out one. Hunter Cervenka did a solid job out of the pen going two scoreless innings, he did walk three and struck out one, and didn’t give up any hits. Luis Liria was good as well going 3.1 innings giving up one run on three hits while walking one and striking out five. Frank Del Valle was effective as he usually is but didn’t have command at all, he worked 2.2 innings giving up one run on three hits while walking five(!) and striking out three. In all D-Cubs pitchers walked twelve men in the loss.
At The Plate - Matt Szczur has had a solid start to the 2013 season and it continues last night as he was 2-for-5 with a triple, and two runs scored, he’s hitting .288 and has a .348 on base percentage. Ronald Torreyes as been a house on fire since his return, he was 1-for-4 with a double, and two runs scored, he’s hitting .353 on the season. Arismendy Alcantara continues to impress everyone associated with the Cubs, even their fans, he was 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI’s, and a stolen base, his sixth in the last three games. Christian Villanueva was 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI’s, and two runs scored, his average is only at .204 on the season but he already has twelve RBI’s.
On The Mound - Matt Loosen got the start and didn’t get the win but did some solid work, he just couldn’t get through five innings. He went four scoreless innings giving up four hits while walking two and striking out eight. A.J. Morris came on in relief to record the win as he went three innings giving up one run on three hits while walking two and striking out two. Brian Schlitter shut things down over the last two innings, as he didn’t give up a run, he gave up three hits and struck out three. I would also like to thank Born on Third friend Celeste Whiteside @aspenthisyear for sending along the following picture of Trey McNutt from last night, thanks so much Celeste!
NOTES: Kane County doesn’t play games anymore, they were rained out, again.

Minor Matters – April 13, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate - Logan Watkins showed off his tremendous skill set once again last night. Watkins was 1-for-3 with two walks, a home runs, two RBI’s, and two runs scored. Watkins now had ten walks in ten games so far this season. Darwin Barney made his first rehab start and looked decent at the plate going 1-for-4 with a run scored, and two strikeouts. Brad Nelson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, J.C. Boscan also went 2-for-4 in the loss, he had an RBI and a run scored as well.
On The Mound – Barret Loux got the start and was much better this time out. Loux went five innings giving up one run on six hits while walking two and striking out five to earn his first win of the season. Yoanner Negrin has been outstanding once again as he went three innings only allowing two hits while striking out eight, eight! Blake Parker tossed a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one.
At The Plate – The Smokies jumped out to an 8-1 lead and just barely held on for an 8-6 victory. Ronald Torreyes made his return to the lineup, his first appearance of 2013 and was solid going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored from the lead-off spot. Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI’s and two runs scored. Rubi Silva also had a breakout game going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBI’s, he’s now hitting .320 on the year. Justin Bour only had one hit, but was productive, he finished the day 1-for-4 with three RBI’s.
On The Mound – The Smokies were good, and not so good late. Kyle Hendricks got the start and the win, he went six innings giving up one run, unearned, on five hits while walking three and striking out one. A.J. Morris struggled out of the pen going 1.1 innings giving up five runs on three hits while walking two hits while striking out one. Frank Batista settled things down to earn the save, he went 1.2 innings giving up no runs on one hit while striking out one.
At The Plate – The D-Cubs fell behind early and just couldn’t generate enough offense to get back into this one. Javier Baez is starting to show signs of breaking out as he was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored. John Andreoli was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, he’s now hitting .364 on the season. Stephen Bruno was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored. Dustin Geiger was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI’s in the loss.
On The Mound – A rare bad outing from P.J. Francescon, he got the loss going five innings giving up six runs on eight hits while walking none and striking out five. Eduardo Figueroa didn’t get much help from his defense as he worked three innings giving up three runs, all unearned, on two hits while walking four and striking out none.
At The Plate – The Cougars built a 4-0 lead by the top of the third, by the bottom of the fourth it was gone. The Cougars mounted a late comeback, but they ran out of time in game one. Daniel Vogelbach continued his hot start to the season going 1-for-2 with two walks, his first home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Rock Shoulders is even hotter at the plate right now going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBI’s, he’s now hitting .455 on the season. Jeimer Candelario finally had a solid game going 1-for-2 with two walks, a double, and a run scored.
On The Mound – Ian Dickson hasn’t had the best start to the 2013 season, that continued in this one. Dickson went five innings giving up seven runs on eights hits while walking none and striking out three. Brian Smith tossed a scoreless inning in relief only giving up one hit.
At The Plate - It took eleven innings but the Cougars were able to split the double-header with the Timer Rattlers. Jeimer Candelario had a solid second game as well going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Willson Contreras was great coming off the bench and ended up with the game winning home run, he was 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI’s and a run scored. Wes Darvill was 2-for-4 with a caught stealing, and an error, so a good and bad day for him.
On The Mound – Felix Pena was outstanding in this one going six innings giving up one run, unearned, on five hits while walking one and striking out three. Justin Amlung, who has been roughed up in the early going had an outstanding outing yesterday. Amlung went four scoreless innings out of the pen giving up only two hits while walking one and striking out one. Minor Matters – April 8, 2013
At The Plate – Things have not gone well for the Iowa Cubs, that is reflected in their now 0-5 record. Logan Watkins led off today as was great going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, he’s now hitting .368 on the season. Brett Jackson had a solid game going 2-for-4 with a double, and two RBI’s. Newcomer Donnie Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the loss.
On The Mound – Really rough go of it for the I-Cubs pitchers. Barret Loux got the start and was beat up giving up six runs on three hits while walking three walks and striking out two in only one inning of work. Jaye Chapman worked 2.2 innings giving up two runs on two hits while walking three without a strike out. Cory Wade got roughed up giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out one in three innings of work. Blake Parker worked 1.1 scoreless innings while walking one and striking out two.
At The Plate – Matt Szczur continued his solid work out of the lead-off spot going 2-for-3 with a run scored, and a stolen base. Arismendy Alcantara who was hitting in the two hole was 2-for-4, but also made two errors. The rest of the Smokies lineup could only manage one hit in the 2-1 loss.
On The Mound – Really solid effort from the Smokies pitchers in this one. Dae-Eun Rhee got the start and was decent, he struggled a bit with his command in 4.1 innings of work giving up one run on two hits while walking three and striking out one. Brian Schlitter was the tough luck loser in this one, he worked 1.2 innings giving up one run, unearned, on two hits while walking one. Zach Rosscup and Trey McNutt each worked a scoreless inning to keep things close.
At The Plate – Finally a win for the Cougars, they did plenty offensively but had to work overtime after a blown save, more on that in a bit. Gioskar Amaya broke out today after a slow start to the season, he was 3-for-5 with a triple, a stolen base, and a run scored. Chadd Krist was 3-for-5 with two doubles, ans two runs scored. Bijan Rademacher did most of the damage today going 3-for-5 with three RBI’s. Rock Shoulders stayed red hot at the plate going 2-for-5 with a run scored, he’s now hitting .455 on the season.
On The Mound – Lendy Castillo who is transitioning to a starting role was fantastic in his 2013 debut. Castillo went five strong innings giving up one run on three hits while walking two and striking out four, unfortunately he had a win snatched from him. Brian Smith was solid out of the pen going two scoreless innings giving up one hit while walking one and striking out one. Justin Amlung blew the save but also got the win, he worked three innings giving up four runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three.

Late Cubs Rally Falls Short
Every time the Cubs fought back in this one the Giants would tack on a couple of insurance runs to keep the Cubs at bay, the Cubs final push came in the ninth inning as they scored twice, but ran
out of outs as they fell to the Giants 9-7. Carlos Villanueva made his second appearance of the Spring, and had a much better performance. Villanueva was able to make it through three innings, giving up one run on four hits while walking one, and striking out two. It was nice to see Villanueva find the strike zone repeatedly in this one, I’ll take giving up hits over walks any day, and he was able to work around the hits for the most part. Barret Loux came on in relief and didn’t have it today, he tossed two innings, giving up four runs, all earned on three hits while walking one and striking out one, Loux was hung with the loss. Jaye Chapman also struggled today as he surrendered two runs on two hits in his inning of work. After having a rough Spring debut, Robert Whitenack bounced back nicely today as he pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out one.
The Cubs were once again productive at the plate as they scored seven runs while pounding out ten hits. Brian Bogusevic got the start in right field today and was stellar at the plate going 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk, and two runs scored. Dioner Navarro only had one hit but he had a productive day, he ended the day 1-for-3 with a walk, and two RBI’s. Steve Clevenger got the start at first base today, yes first base, and he did his best Anthony Rizzo impersonation going 2-for-3 with two RBI’s, Clevenger is having a solid Spring at the plate, hitting .500 (4-for-8) in the early going. Brett Jackson didn’t start, but had an eventful day nonetheless going 1-for-1 with a double, and a stolen base. Jackson is having a resurgent Spring, and a lot of that can be contributed to a new swing, and new-found confidence, he his slated to start 2013 in Iowa, but is doing everything he can to make that decision anything but a given, he’s hitting .375 (3-for-8) with two triples, and a double this Spring.

Cubs Let Big Early Lead Slip Away in Loss to Dodgers
The Cubs used the long ball early and often against Chad Billingsley and the Dodgers staff to build a 6-2 lead through three innings. Nate Schierholtz hit a solo shot in the
first, and then Welington Castillo went back to back with Darnell McDonald in the third inning. McDonald padded the RBI numbers with a three run homer, a no doubter. Unfortunately that was about it for the Cubs offense as they couldn’t scratch across another run the rest of the afternoon. Carlos Villanueva made his Cubs debut and it could have been better as he struggled with his command. Villanueva couldn’t make in through the first inning as he walked two guys, and gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Blake Parker and Barret Loux had solid outings, each turning in a scoreless effort. Robert Whitenack struggled today, giving up three runs, while not allowing a hit, yes he struggled with command as well, walking two in two-thirds of an inning. The news of the day came from Dontrelle Willis, not because he made his debut, but because he only threw seven pitches before leaving with what is being described as shoulder stiffness, he took the loss.
Game Highlights:
Darnell McDonald’s Three-Run Bomb
Dontrelle Willis leaves with an Injury
Welington Castillo’s Solo Shot
Nate Schierholtz Goes Deep

Cubs Trade Brigham Back to Texas for Loux
I guess you can finally say the trade of Geovany Soto to the Rangers is complete now. At the time of the deal last July the Cubs received right-handed pitcher Jake Brigham from Texas in return for Soto and Brigham was
assigned to Double-A Tennessee. Brigham was very bad, the reason he was very bad was a right elbow strain, because of this right elbow strain the Rangers and Cubs agreed that they would revisit this deal in the off-season to make sure everyone was made whole and no hard feelings. Are you still following? If so, good that brings us to today. The Cubs have traded Jake Brigham back to the Rangers for right-handed pitcher Barret Loux, and a player to be named later, which in reality is probably the best possible scenario for the Cubs.
Loux had some injury issues in the past as well, but he once was thought very highly of. Loux was drafted 6th overall by the Diamondbacks in the 2010 Amateur Draft out of Texas A&M, and subsequently failed a physical because of a torn labrum and other elbow injuries so he was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball at the time. He was signed by the Rangers shortly thereafter and has shown to be past those injuries and with a decent level of success as well. Loux, now 23, was named the 2012 Double-A Texas League Pitcher of the Year going 14-1 with a 3.47 ERA in 25 regular season starts with Frisco, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts out in Triple-A next year with the Iowa Cubs.
