SPOTLIGHT GAME

Daytona 7-28 line

Full Box Score

At the plate - Daytona couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it in this one, but still found enough offense to escape with a win.  Ben Carhart was 2-for-5 in the win, he is now hitting .251 on the season.  Dustin Geiger has put together a stellar 2013, he was 2-for-4 with a walk in this one and is now hitting .289 on the season.  Both Taiwan Easterling and Brad Zapenas had two hits, and a run scored today.  Daytona registered nine hits but they were only 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eleven men on base.

On the mound - I was really excited for C.J. Edwards Cubs debut today and he didn’t disappoint.  Edwards was nasty going five scoreless innings giving up one hit while walking one and striking out eight.  The only hit Edwards gave up was of the infield variety, and not one ball made it out of the infield.  That wasn’t the only impressive stat from this one as Edwards struck out the first seven hitters he faced, unfortunately he walked away with a no decision.  Lendy Castillo took over and was solid going three scoreless innings giving up one run, unearned, on one hit while walking three, and striking out three to earn his first win of the year.  Austin Reed worked the ninth for his third save of the year, he allowed one hit and that was it.

FULL BOX SCORE

Don’t look now, but the Daytona Cubs are starting to play some good baseball.  The trend continued Tuesday night as the D-Cubs used an 8 run 3rd inning to smash the Stone Crabs 12-4.  Every starter had at least one hit for Daytona with four guys registering multi-hit games.  Rubi Silva had a big day at the plate going 2-for-6 with a home run and three RBI’s, he’s now hitting .315 on the season.  Matt Loosen seemed to relax with all that run support as he turned in a nice outing going five innings to earn his first win of the season.

FULL BOX SCORE

It was a night of missed opportunity for the Smokies as they had 10 hits but only three runs and left 12 guys on base in a 6-3 loss to Birmingham.  Trey McNutt went three innings while giving up four runs, three earned on five hits as he took the loss to drop to 0-3 on the season.  Jae-Hoon Ha, Luis Flores, and James Adduci all recorded mult-hit games with Flores collecting three.  Justin Bour was the only offense as he blasted his 5th home run of the season in the fourth inning.

FULL BOX SCORE

The I-Cubs must have been tired of playing in 1-0 games so they decided to break out the bats in a big way against Fresno.  Iowa pounded out 15 hits and 13 runs en route to a 13-2 shellacking of the Fresno Grizzles.  Anthony Rizzo was the star of the show as he almost always is as he went 2-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI’s.  Josh Vitters also had himself a day going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and 4 RBI’s.  Chris Rusin took that run support and ran with it as he turned in six solid innings of one run ball to earn his third win of the season.  It’s a fun box score for sure, go check it out.
