5/6: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is your nightly recap for the Cubs minor league system, enjoy.

Peoria’s pitching had a rough weekend.  One night after giving up 20 runs to Quad Cities they gave up 9 in a 9-2 defeat.  Wes Darvill and Rafael Lopez each had two hits in the losing effort.  Brad Zapenas was 1-for-1 with a double and three walks.  Michael Jensen was beat up on the mound for Peoria as he took the loss, dropping his record to 3-2 on the season.

Austin Kirk was outstanding once again, however he had to settle for a no decision as the bullpen couldn’t hold a late 3-2 lead.  Jupiter tied the game in the 8th and 9th innings, only to have Daytona walk off in the ninth for a 5-4 victory.  Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-5 with two triples and two RBI’s.  Matt Szczur continues to turn his season around slowly but surely going 1-for-4 and stealing his 16th base of the season.

Junior Lake made his Smokies debut on Sunday and he didn’t disappoint.  One of the Cubs top infield prospected went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.  Elliot Soto also had two hits and an RBI in the losing effort.  Brooks Raley had a solid day on the mound going a strong six innings for a no decision as the Smokies couldn’t hold on to a 2-0 lead and ended up losing 4-2.

Brett Jackson had a big day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Unfortunately that wasn’t enough as Iowa fell to New Orleans 12-4.  Luis Valbuena and Alfredo Amezaga each had two hits as well.  Iowa pitching got beat up top to bottom, Jay Jackson took the loss after surrendering five runs in four innings of work.

FULL BOX SCORE

 A crushing defeat for Daytona as they lost the lead in the top of the 9th inning, and lost the game in the top of the 10th.  The D-Cubs couldn’t generate much offense, but they held the lead into the 9th behind a strong start from Austin Kirk.  Kirk was awesome, going 8 innings, and only giving up two runs, his ERA now sits at 1.69.  He ended the night with a tough luck no decision.  Rubi Silva had the big hit of the night for the D-Cubs, which was a two run triple in the 3rd inning.

Brooks Raley pitched well enough to earn a victory Tuesday Night, and it looked like he was until the late innings.  Montgomery battled back and erased a 4-1 deficit by scoring 5 runs combined in the 7th and 8th en route to a 6-5 victory.  Logan Watkins, and Michael Burgess each went deep for the Smokies in the losing effort.

Everybody hits, and everybody drives runs in, it was an offensive explosion in Memphis as the I-Cubs pounded out 20 hits and 13 runs en route to a 13-4 victory.  Every Cubs starter, including Jay Jackson had a hit, and every Cubs starter except Josh Vitters had an RBI, that’s hard to do.  Brett Jackson was 4-for-5, Dave Sappelt was 3-for-6, Adrian Cardenas was 3-for-6, the list goes on, check out the full box score, it’s a treat.

4/25: Smokies Shut Down by Generals Again

It’s been tough sledding for the Smokies against the Generals this year, as they have been held to one run or less multiple times.  Wednesday night was no different as the Generals stymied the Smokies en route to a 5-1 victory.  James Adduci and Nate Samson were the only offense for the Smokies, Adduci going 3-for-4 and Samson going 2-for-3.  Full box score after the jump.

4/20: Tennessee Edges Chattanooga

Brooks Raley was awesome Friday night going six innings, giving up two runs on three hits to earn a no decision.  Kevin Rhoderick came in and was equally effective, holding the Lookouts scoreless over the next inning and 1/3rd to come out with the victory.  Jae-Hoon Ha, Logan Watkins, and Juan Apodaca all had two hits for the Smokies, as they were able to complete the comeback by scoring in the 7th inning to take the lead 3-2.  Full box score after the jump.

Tennessee Wins Second Straight

The Tennessee Smokies won their second straight today behind the strength of a five run second inning.  Michael Burgess had a huge day at the plate going 3-for-4 with a HR, and double and two RBI’s.  Brooks Raley was fantastic on the mound for the Smokies going 7 innings giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out one.  Full box score after the jump.

Raley Pitches Smokies to Victory

Brooks Raley didn’t get the win Monday Night, but the Smokies probably wouldn’t have won without him.  Raley went 6 and 1/3rd innings, allowing two runs on six hits with only one walk, and four strikeouts.  Jae-Hoon Ha was outstanding for the Smokies.  He had two hits in four at bats and gunned down a baserunner at the plate securing the Smokies’ 3-2 victory.
