On an evening that seemed like the “same old night” at Wrigley, the Cubs had a breakthrough. After getting dominated for 8 straight innings by Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia, the Cubs took three weeks worth of frustration out on Cardinals closer Jason Motte. A combination of outstanding at bats, and a clutch base hit led to the Cubs first walk off win of the season. Full recap and highlights after the jump.
The weather is miserable in the Chicagoland area today, but it’s not as bad as the Cubs, they are ice-cold. Thanks to a rocky outing from Chris Volstad, and some bad defensive work, stop me if you’ve heard this before, the Cubs have dropped their sixth in a row. Right from the hop it was apparent that the Cubs probably didn’t have a chance today. Before the sparse crowd could even get settled the Reds were up 4-0 in the top of the first inning against Volstad. Things never really got better for the Cubs as every time they tried to mount a comeback the Reds were able to tack on to their lead. When it was all said and done, the Reds walk out with a 9-4 victory, in which the Cubs almost had more errors (3) than runs (4) and hits (5). Full Recap after the jump.
St. Louis wins the series 2 – 1.

Okay, I’m sure the Cardinals will live, they walk away from today’s game with a loss but they also got a rather shiny ring to commemorate their World Championship last year that the Cubs had a huge hand in. Today, the Cubs got a small piece of revenge beating the Cardinals 9-5 at a soggy Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Adam Wainwright, who is returning from Tommy John this season was beat for the second time this year, while Jeff Samardzija earned his second win in as many starts for the Cubs. While the Cubs won by four runs it really could have been much more as it was a tale of two games.
Bryan LaHair was named the opening day starter at first base very early in the Spring, turns out that might not be the case. LaHair is still the Cubs starting first baseman, however a stiff back that has plagued him for the last week or so of spring training might keep him out of todays game. Reports are that LaHair is 50/50 to play today, if he cannot go then Blake DeWitt will get the nod at first base. We will pass along the official lineups once they are posted.

A welcome sight to players and fans alike, the last game of spring training is here. The Cubs will battle the Brewers today at 2:05 PM Central, then break camp and head North for the start of the 2012 season. The bullpen decisions still loom as the Cubs most likely will not finalize their 25 man roster until tomorrow. Here is how the Cubs lineup today, Sveum wanted to go with his opening day lineup but LaHair was a late scratch with a stiff back which has plagued him for the last few days. Travis Wood takes the ball before heading to Iowa.
We preview the first series of the year against the Nationals tonight or tomorrow, check back later on.

Another day, another big home run from Alfonso Soriano, hopefully he can bottle this magic and take it North with him next week. Soriano has been on fire at the plate, hitting six home runs on the spring, he’s clearly motivated, and a motivated Soriano can be a dangerous one for the rest of the National League.
In one of his last auditions to make the Cubs rotation, Jeff Samardzija struggled through four innings against the Rockies on Friday. The Cubs bullpen was able to right the ship, and the Cubs offense was ready and willing to take the game over. The Cubs scored three runs in three different innings erasing defecits of 5-3 and 7-6 in route to a 10-8 slugfest victory
