And the July NL Rookie of the Month is… Anthony Rizzo

After coming up with a lot of expectations and pressure to succeed Anthony Rizzo delivered.  Today he was awarded with the NL Rookie of the Month for July 2012.  Rizzo led NL rookies in a number of categories, including hits, home runs, and RBIs.  Besides the numbers what was really impressive was how clutch Rizzo was.  He had four game winning RBIs, including his first walk-off homer of his career.  Here is a look at his total numbers for the month.

Castillo and Coleman Headed to Chicago… and now Cardenas

Welington Castillo and Casey Coleman will be on their way to Chicago to replace Geovany Soto and Paul Maholm on the roster.  The interesting part is we don’t know who is going to take the spot of Reed Johnson.  According to many sources it is not Brett Jackson and per Dave Sappelt’s twitter it won’t be him.  So who will it be?  More to come I’m sure.

UPDATE:  Adrian Cardenas will be the third player coming up for the Cubs.  Hope he gets some more AB’s wherever that may be.

Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson Traded

Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson have been traded to the Atlanta Braves.  No word yet on who the Cubs are getting back in return.  Check back for updates.

Update:  Wow, the Cubs were able to get back two pitchers, Arodys Vizcaino plus Jaye Chapman from the Atlanta Braves.  Vizcaino is really nice piece with a lot of upside.  He missed the year due to Tommy-John Surgery, but was the Braves #3 pitching prospect coming into the year.

Soto Traded

Update:  According to many sources Geovany Soto has been Traded to the Texas Rangers.

After the bottom of the sixth inning Geovany Soto was seen in the dugout shaking hands and hugging teammates and in the bottom half was pinch hit for.  It is possible Soto has been traded as well or the Cubs are just having fun with trade deadline.  Nothing is official,, so we will keep you updated as word comes in.

Reed Johnson Removed from Game, Probably Traded

Reed Johnson was removed from the game before his AB in the fifth inning and is shaking hands with teammates so it appears he has been traded.  Still waiting for confirmation and players involved.  Reed will be a really nice pickup for a team as 4-5 outfielder and a good bat off the bench, plus he is a great teammate.  We will keep you updated as information comes in.

Matt Garza Update

Cubs fans collectively held their breath last week when Matt Garza left with an apparent injury.  Initially we got word that he would miss his next start and pitch on Monday, July 30, but today Cub fans got the news they didn’t want to hear.  An MRI showed that Garza still has fluid in his right tricep and  Dale Sveum told reporters today that he will not pitch Monday and will be pushed back to later in the week.  Later in the week means after the trade deadline on Tuesday, which is bad news for the Cubs as it becomes highly unlikely the Cubs will be able to move him before the deadline.  The Cubs are not placing Garza on the DL hoping to keep what little hope alive that a deal still might be struck.  One has to wonder when the Cubs will get some good news on the trade front.
