Minor Matters – May 18, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Reports)
At The Plate – The losing ways continue for the Iowa Cubs and they can blame themselves as they made four errors in the loss. Logan Watkins was 1-for-4 with his seventh double of the season, and a run scored, he also made his fourth error of the season. Ian Stewart got a rare start and made it count going 2-for-4 with a double, and a run scored. Donnie Murphy was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
On The Mound – Chris Rusin got the start and didn’t help himself as he made on of the errors, but he battled. Rusin went 6.2 innings giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out three. Zach Putnam worked out of Rusin’s trouble in the seventh getting the final out on strikeout. Rafael Dolis worked a scoreless inning in relief giving up two hits while striking out one. Blake Parker worked a scoreless inning as well giving up on hit while walking one and striking out one.
At The Plate – The Smokies are on a roll again, with the win they are now three game above .500 for the season. Matt Szczur shows up in every recap, he was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, he is now hitting .304 on the season. Ronald Torreyes was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Arismendy Alcantara was all over the scoresheet in this one, he was 3-for-4 with his fifth home run of the season, two doubles, two RBI’s, and a run scored, he also made his fourteenth error of the season. Anthony Giansanti also had a big day, and has been awesome since he was promoted to Tennessee, he was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .353 on the season.
On The Mound – Dallas Beeler got the start and his fourth win of the season as he was solid. Beeler went six innings giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out six. Trey McNutt got back on track working one scoreless inning giving up one hit while striking out two. Kevin Rhoderick continues to struggle, he worked one inning giving up one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one. Brian Schlitter worked the ninth for his second save of the season, he went one inning giving up one run, unearned, on two hits while striking out one.
At The Plate – Nice response the last few days from Daytona as the bats have woke up in a big way, fifteen more hits today in the victory. The D-Cubs were only 5-for-20 with runners in scoring position in this one, but having twenty chances is rather impressive. Zeke DeVoss has been struggling but had a solid game going 2-for-5 with two singles, he was picked off as well. Javier Baez had another solid game going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Jorge Soler picked up right where he left off from yesterday, he was 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Dustin Geiger also kept things rolling going 2-for-5 with yet another double, and a run scored. Ben Carhart supplied the power in this one going 1-for-5 with his first home run of the season, three RBI’s, and a run scored.
On The Mound - Zach Cates got the start and picked up his fourth win of the season going 5.2 innings giving up three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out one. David Cales was solid out of the pen going 2.1 innings giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits while walking one and striking out four. Hunter Cervenka was solid again working a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.
At The Plate – Another solid game between the Cougars and the high-powered Kernels, this time Kane County got the best of them winning 4-0. Dan Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with his seventh double of the season, he’s now hitting .288 for the year. Rock Shoulders has been coming back down to Earth as of late, can’t really blame him, but was solid in this one going 2-for-4 with his ninth home run of the season, an RBI, and a run scored. Oliver Zapata provided some surprising offense out of the nine spot going 3-for-4 with his third home run of the season, two RBI’s, and two runs scored.
On The Mound – Pierce Johnson was brilliant in this one as he shut down the prospect laden Kernels. Johnson went six scoreless innings giving up six hits while walking one and striking out nine to earn his second win of the season. Justin Amlung was solid out of the pen going two scoreless innings while walking two and striking out three. Jeffry Antigua closed the door in the ninth working a scoreless inning giving up on hit while striking out two.
Minor Matters – May 12, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – Tough one to swallow for the Cubs in this one as they blew a 6-1 lead that they had in the third, and an 8-6 lead in the ninth by giving up three runs in the bottom half to lose 9-8. Brett Jackson seems to be finding a groove ever since coming off the DL, he was 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored. Josh Vitters was 1-for-3 with two walks, and a run scored. Dave Sappelt was 1-for-5 with a triple, three RBI’s, and a run scored in the loss. Brad Nelson was 2-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season, two RBI’s, and two runs scored. Ian Stewart made a rare appearance in this one and it was a productive one, he was 1-for-1 with a triple, and two RBI’s in a pinch-hitting role.
On The Mound – Chris Rusin didn’t have his best stuff in this one, going five innings giving up five runs on nine hits while striking out one. Casey Coleman was outstanding out of the pen going two scoreless innings while striking out one. Hisanori Takahashi worked just one-third of an inning giving up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out one. Rafael Dolis worked one inning and it wasn’t good, he gave up two runs on one hit while walking one and striking out one. Blake Parker also struggled in a third of an inning, giving up one run on one hit, he was hung with his first loss of the season.
At The Plate – The Smokies had plenty of opportunities in this one, but were only 4-17 with runners in scoring position. Even so, the Smokies scored five times, and that was plenty in this one, winning 5-0. Matt Szczur has been on a roll of late, and today as well, he was 3-for-5 with a double, and two RBI’s, he’s now hitting .287 on the season. Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-4 with a double, he also made his eleventh error on the season in the victory. Christian Villanueva was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Tim Torres was 1-for-4 with a double, and two runs scored.
On The Mound - Kyle Hendricks was outstanding once again in this one, going 6.2 scoreless innings giving up four hits while walking one and striking out four to earn his second win of the season. A.J. Morris pitched out of trouble in his inning of work, he worked a scoreless inning giving up two hits while walking one and striking out two. Zach Rosscup worked 1.1 scoreless innings while walking one and striking out three to close this one out.
At The Plate – Kane County seems to find ways to lose games in the worst ways, tonight was one of them as the Cougars led 6-3 in the sixth inning only to fall 7-6. Bijan Rademacher was 0-for-2 with three walks, a run scored, and a caught stealing. Jeimer Candelario was 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. Rock Shoulders was 1-for-5 with a grand slam, his eighth home run of the season, four RBI’s, and a run scored. Carlos Escobar, and Oliver Zapata each had two hits in the loss.
On The Mound – Dillon Maples was promoted from extended spring training to Kane County today as got the start. First things first that is very important as Maples is one of the better pitching prospects in the system, and it’s good to see him back healthy. Maples went five innings giving up three runs on six hits while striking out two. Lendy Castillo took over and ended up taking the loss going 4.1 innings giving up four runs on two hits while walking four and striking out four.
Minor Matters – May 6, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – The Iowa Cubs are playing much better baseball of late and they are being rewarded with wins. Brian Bogusevic just hits, that’s all, he was 1-for-2 with two walks, a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored. Josh Vitters was 1-for-4 with his second home run in as many days, two RBI’s and a run scored. Brad Nelson was 2-for-4 with two singles in the win. Edwin Maysonet was 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season, a double, three RBI’s, and a run scored.
On The Mound – Matt Garza made his first appearance with Iowa in his rehab tour of the minor leagues tonight. Garza was solid tonight, working 3.1 innings giving up four runs while striking out three, and emerging healthy. Cory Wade worked two-thirds of an inning giving up a hit while striking out two. Chris Rusin was tremendous out of the pen to get the win, he worked five scoreless innings giving up three hits while striking out two.
At The Plate – Daytona seems to be in a funk at the plate as of late, they were only able to score twice on six hits tonight. John Andreoli hasn’t missed a beat however as he was 2-for-4 with a double, and his tenth stolen base of the seaoson. Jorge Soler had a big night going 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season, a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.
On The Mound – Zach Cates was knocked around quite a bit this one as he worked four innings giving up six runs on eleven hits while walking one and striking out two. Frank Del Valle was great out of the pen going two scoreless innings giving up one hit while striking out three. Austin Reed was just as good going two scoreless innings giving up one hit while striking out one.
At The Plate – Kane County’s six game winning streak came to an end tonight, but not without some fight from the Cougars. After falling behind 11-1 the Cougars scored seven times over the final five innings to make it a game but fell just short. Pin-Chieh Chen was 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI’s, and two runs scored. Dan Vogelbach was 1-for-4 with a walk, a double, two RBI’s and a run scored. Jeimer Candelario was 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI, and a run scored. Bijan Rademacher has been out of his mind lately, he was 3-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored in the loss.
On The Mound – Some good and some bad for the Cougars in this one. Lendy Castillo got the start and the loss as he went four innings giving up eight runs, six earned, on eight hits while walking one and striking out two. Jeffry Antigua wasn’t much better as he worked an inning giving up three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Now the good, Eddie Orozco went two scoreless, hit-less innings while striking out two. Brian Smith worked a scoreless inning as well giving up two hits while walking one and striking out one. Bijan Rademacher not only had three hits in this one, he also pitched a scoreless inning, ah, minor league baseball with loads of double-headers.

Minor Matters – May 1, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Reports)
At The Plate – The Cubs couldn’t scratch out a run in this one as they could only manage four hits in a 1-0 loss. Logan Watkins did nearly all the work today for Iowa as he was 3-for-3 with a walk, Ryan Sweeney was the only other Iowa player with a hit. The Cubs were 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position but that one hit did not result in a run.
On The Mound – Chris Rusin was outstanding in this one, but saw his record fall to 1-3 with the loss. Rusin went seven innings giving up one run on six hits while striking out five. Hisanori Takahashi, and Zach Putnam each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to keep things close.
At The Plate – Yeah, only five innings as this one was shortened by rain. In those five innings the Smokies did nothing, well almost nothing, they did get singles, yep that’s it. The Smokies didn’t even have a chance to hit with anyone in scoring position in this one. Rubi Silva and Rafael Lopez were each 1-for-2 in the loss.
On The Mound – Much more important things taking place on the mound in this one as Matt Garza made his first rehab start. That’s the other part of minor league baseball, sometimes it’s not for development, it’s for getting healthy, and Garza took his first step towards that today. Garza went 2.2 innings giving up one run on one hit while walking two, but more importantly made it out of today seemingly healthy, so that’s good news. Kevin Rhoderick tossed 1.1 scoreless innings while walking two and striking out one. Matt Loosen couldn’t keep things close “late” as he worked two-thirds of an inning giving up two runs on two hits while walking one.
At The Plate – Really solid game all around from the D-Cubs in this one as they found just enough offense to knock off the Cardinals. Jorge Soler was 1-for-3 with a double, and a stolen base, nice to see Soler starting to get a few hits here and there after slumping, his average is back up to .275 on the season. Ben Carhart is on fire of late, that continued tonight as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI’s, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .312 on the season. Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win.
On The Mound – Ben Wells was outstanding today, and really has been good all year. Wells went seven innings giving up one run on three hits while walking one and striking out three. Eduardo Figueroa took it from there as he worked two scoreless innings giving up two hits while walking one and striking out three to earn his first save of the season.
At The Plate – Looked like the Cougars were going to cruise to a victory, but as we have learned so far this season, nothing is easy for the Cougars and they needed ten innings to get the win. Pin-Chieh Chen was 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Gioskar Amaya was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Daniel Vogelbach played the hero tonight as he was 1-for-5 with two RBI’s, that one was a huge one, a walk-off single in the tenth inning.
On The Mound – Pierce Johnson has been disgusting (in a good way) as of late, and tonight was no different. Johnson went 6.2 innings giving up one run on four hits while walking one and striking out four. Eddie Orozco did a solid job out of the pen tossing a scoreless inning while giving up one hit while walking two and striking out two. Jeffry Antigua had a rough go of it as he blew the save, but also got the win, he went 2.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits while striking out four.

Minor Matters – April 26, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – Iowa fought back in this one scoring twice in the ninth inning to tie the game at four, only to lose it in the bottom of the tenth. Ryan Sweeney continues to pound the ball as he went 2-for-5 with his fifth home run, two RBI’s, and a run scored, he’s hitting .404 this season. Brian Bogusevic is just as hot as he went 3-for-4 in the loss, he’s hitting .394 on the season. Brad Nelson extended the game in the ninth inning with a pinch hit two run homer, his fourth of the season to tie it at four.
On The Mound – Chris Rusin was really good just didn’t get any help from his offense is this one. Rusin went six innings giving up two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one. Hisanori Takahashi couldn’t keep things tied during his outing, he went one inning giving up one run on one hit while striking out one. Blake Parker was decent out of the pen going two innings giving up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out three. Zach Putnam took the loss in this one, he worked a third of an inning giving up one run on three hits.
At The Plate – The Smokies just continue to roll on as they walked away with another win Friday Night. Jae-Hoon Ha filled up the score book going 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Rubi Silva had a big night as well going 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run, three RBI’s, and a run scored. Rafael Lopez knocked in the other run for the Smokies and that’s all they would need, Lopez finished the night 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
On The Mound – Alberto Cabrera was outstanding for the Smokies going six innings giving up one run on three hits while walking three and striking out six to earn the win. Kevin Rhoderick was touched up a little bit again, he went two-thirds of an inning giving up one run on two hits while walking one. A.J. Morris also allowed Clearwater to get closer in his one inning of work, he gave up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out one. Trey McNutt got the train back on the tracks in this one to earn his second save of the year. McNutt went 1.1 scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out one.
At The Plate – Daytona jumped all over the Flying Tigers early and often en route to a 7-3 victory Friday Night. Javier Baez is rounding into form right now, he went 2-for-4 in this one with a double, two RBI’s and a run scored, he’s now hitting .253 on the year and .341 in his last ten games. Dustin Geiger was also productive going 2-for-4 with three RBI’s, he’s an RBI machine, he now has twenty-one on the season. Chad Noble was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Taiwan Easterling was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and a stolen base.
On The Mound – Ben Wells battled command issues but was able to work effectively enough to earn the win. Wells went 5.2 innings giving up three runs, two earned, on one hit while walking five and striking out one. Eduardo Figueroa found some trouble out of the pen going two-thirds of an inning giving up two hits while walking one and striking out one, and would have given up a couple runs if not for the work of Hunter Cervenka. Cervenka bailed out Figueroa while working 2.2 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season, he didn’t give up any hits while walking three and striking out four.
At The Plate – Kane County might not have another loss all year that stings as much as this one, and they really only have themselves to blame. The cougars lead 5-1 in the ninth inning but gave up four in the ninth and lost in the tenth, they made five errors in the process. Rock Shoulders continues to hit, he was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored, he’s hitting .403 on the season. The bulk of the damage was done by the bottom of the Cougars order. Eight hitter Oliver Zapata was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Nine hitter Yaniel Cabezas was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and a run scored.
On The Mound – Pierce Johnson continues to dominate as of late, he went 5.2 innings giving up one run, unearned, on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. Jeffry Antigua was great out of the pen going 2.1 scoreless innings giving up two hits while striking out three. Then things went bad, Nathan Dorris was roughed up in one-third of an inning, he gave up four runs, two earned (sending a theme?), on three hits while walking one. Eddie Orozco was officially charge with the blown save and the loss, he worked 1.1 innings giving up one run on three hits while walking two.

Minor Matters – April 20, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – The Cubs tried to stage a late rally but it wasn’t enough after they fell behind Memphis 8-2 in the fifth inning. Logan Watkins was 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a caught stealing. Ty Wright was 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI’s and a run scored. Brian Bogusevic (2-for-4) and Luis Flores (2-for-4) each had two hits in the loss with Bigusevic scoring a run and Flores knocking one in.
On The Mound – Chris Rusin got the start, and got lit up by the Redbirds. Rusin went 4.1 inning giving up seven runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three, he took the loss, his second of the year. Esmailin Caridad was decent out of the pen going 2.2 innings giving up one run on two hits while walking one ans striking out two. Cory Wade worked a scoreless inning of relief surrendering one hit.
At The Plate – The Smokies are red hot as they easily dispatched the Biscuits, the Biscuits! To win their fifth straight game, and this one was never in doubt. Eight out of the nine Smokies players in the lineup last night had at least one hit. Matt Szczur is out to prove himself this year, and he’s doing it so far, he went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI’s, and two runs scored from the lead-off spot, he’s now hitting .302 on the season. Arismendy Alcantara was 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI’s and a run scored, he also made his 8th error. Johermyn Chavez was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI’s and a run scored. Christian Villanueva (2-for-5), Rubi Silva (2-for-4), and Rafael Lopez (2-for-3) all had two hits games in the victory.

Beeler went seven innings giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits while walking one and striking out three. Both Zach Rosscup and Frank Batista worked scoreless inning out of the pen with Rosscup striking out two and Batista striking out one.
At The Plate – The top of the order did all the damage in this one, unfortunately that wasn’t enough to knock off the Yankees. Timothy Saunders was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, and a two runs scored from the lead-off spot. John Andreoli, who is red-hot, went 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored, he’s now hitting .356 on the season. Javier Baez was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Jorge Soler went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI’s. The bottom five guys in the D-Cubs order went a combined 1-for-18 and Daytona as a team was 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
On The Mound – Ben Wells was okay in this one, but still took the loss, he went six innings giving up four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out six. Yeiper Castillo was dominant out of the pen working two scoreless, hit-less innings while striking out one. Sheldon McDonald didn’t fare as well in his inning of work, he gave up two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two.
At The Plate – The Cougars put this one to rest rather early as they jumped all over the River Bandits building a 6-1 lead in the fourth and cruised to a 7-3 win. Five different Cougars had multi-hit games in this one. Marco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and two runs scored. Daniel Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with a run scored, he’s now hitting .309 on the season. Jeimer Candelario was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI’s, and a run scored. Rock Shoulders continued to pound the ball, he was 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run, his third, an RBI, and two runs scored. The Cougars were an impressive 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

At The Plate – Game two was much closer, but ended the same way, with a Cougars win as they swept the double-header. Daniel Vogelbach was 2-for-3 with a walk, and a run scored. But game two, and really the whole day belonged to Rock Shoulders, he was 3-for-3 in game two with his fourth home run of the season, three RBI’s and a run scored, his average now sits at .418 on the season after going 5-for-6 in the double-header. Marco Hernandez was 1-for-4 with a triple, and a run scored in the victory.
On The Mound – Tayler Scott did most of the work, double-header games are only seven innings in Minor League ball, Scott went six giving up three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four to get the win. Jeffry Antigua worked a scoreless final inning to earn his first save of the season, quite the day for the Cougars.

Minor Matters – April 14, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – Two wins in a row for Iowa, that says a lot considering they only have three total this year. Brian Bogusevic was 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot with a caught stealing and a run scored. Darwin Barney showed great patience in his second rehab start, he was 0-for-1 with three walks, a stolen base, and a run scored. Luis Flores was 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Brad Nelson had the big hit in this one, a two run single that gave the Cubs some breathing room, he was 1-for-4 with two RBI’s on the day.
On The Mound - After some rocky starts to start the season, Chris Rusin bounced back with a stellar performance. Rusin went seven innings giving up one run on four hits while walking none and striking out four to earn the win. Zach Putnam worked two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year, he walked one and struck out three.
At The Plate - The Smokies busted this one open in the seventh inning scoring four times to take a 7-1 lead on their way to a 7-3 win. Ronald Torreyes had his second straight solid game going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Jae-Hoon Ha was outstanding going 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Rubi Silva (2-for-4) and Jonathan Mota (2-for-4) each had two hits in the victory, and Matt Szczur recorded his 5th stolen base of the season.
On The Mound – Couldn’t get much better than Dae-Eun Rhee as he went six scoreless innings giving up one hit while striking out three to earn his first win of the season. Zach Rosscup and Kevin Rhoderick each had a rough go out of it in the seventh and eighth inning with Rosscup giving up one run and Rhoderick giving up two. Brian Schlitter worked a scoreless ninth inning to secure the victory.
At The Plate - The D-Cubs were able to get back to .500 with a solid victory of the Tampa Yankees. Javier Baez seems to be coming around at the plate, he was 1-for-4 with a double, he has hits in his last three games. Stephen Bruno was 2-for-4 with a run scored, he is now hitting .385 on the season. Dustin Geiger was 2-for-4 with a run scored, after his slow start he is now hitting .286 on the season. Micah Gibbs was 2-for-4 with a double, and an RBI in the victory.
On The Mound – Zach Cates was outstanding in this one going six innings giving up one run on four hits while walking thee and striking out four. Austin Reed was just as good out of the bullpen going two innings giving up no runs on three hits while striking out two. Frank Del Valle continues his awesome start to the season as he worked a scoreless ninth for his second save. He didn’t give up any hits or walks, and struck out the side.

At The Plate – The Iowa Cubs are scuffling, with the latest loss they fall to 0-6 on the season. Brett Jackson had a solid game going 2-for-4 with a triple, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .280 on the season. Darnell McDonald was 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Ty Wright was 2-for-4 with two singles in the loss.
On The Mound – Chris Rusin was roughed up early then settled in but couldn’t escape the loss. Rusin went six innings giving up four runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two. Zach Putnam and Rafael Dolis both tossed scoreless innings out of the bullpen in the loss.
At The Plate – The D-Cubs spent the whole night fighting back, but in the end couldn’t catch the Threshers. Zeke DeVoss showed some power from the lead-off spot going 1-for-5 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Javier Baez was 1-for-5 with a triple, and a run scored. Jorge Soler continues his torrid start to the season going 2-for-4 with a walk, and an RBI. The D-Cubs made four errors, that most definitely cost them in this one.
On The Mound – Zach Cates made the start and as I just mentioned didn’t get much help from the guys behind him. Cates went 3.2 innings giving up three runs, one earned, on six hits while walking none and striking out seven. Eduardo Figueroa went 2.2 innings out of the pen giving up two runs on one hits while walking two and striking out three. Sheldon McDonald was solid going 2.2 innings giving up no runs on two hits while walking two and striking out one.
At The Plate – The Cougars smacked the ball all over the place in this one as six different guys had multi-hit games. Daniel Vogelbach was 3-for-5 bring his season average up to .310, all three hits were singles. Rock Shoulders might be the hottest hitter in the Cubs system, he went 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored, he’s hitting .480 (12-for-25) on the season. Gioskar Amaya, Jeimer Candelario, Marco Hernandez, and Bijan Rademacher all had two hits.
On The Mound – Pierce Johnson had a rough start to this one as he gave up two runs in the first as he struggled with command, but he found it quickly. Johnson went five innings giving up two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four. Jeffry Antigua was solid out of the pen going three innings giving up one run on four hits while walking none and striking out one. Eduardo Orozco had some tough luck in blowing the save, but ended up getting the win. Orozco gave up two runs, both unearned on NO hits, and one walk in one inning.

Minor Matters – April 4, 2013
Welcome to Minor Matters, here’s a quick introduction… You want to know how the Cubs’ minor league teams did? Then this is the post you want to read, it will be a daily post and will recap EVERY minor league game that day. Usually this post will be published the night of the games, sometimes, especially once Boise starts, the post might not appear until the next morning. Enjoy!.
At The Plate - Iowa pounded out eleven hits on the night, but could only push across three runs in the defeat. Brian Bogusevic led the way going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, all three hits were singles. Ty Wright went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and J.C. Boscan also went 2-for-4. All eleven Cubs hits were singles.
On The Mound - It was a rough start for Chris Rusin as he gave up three in the first but he settled down to make it through five innings. Rusin gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out four. Jensen Lewis got lit up and was slapped with the loss as he gave up five runs, three earned (defense was an issue) on four hits in a third of an inning. Zach Putnam didn’t fair much better has he gave up two runs all earned on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Both Casey Coleman and Rafael Dolis had scoreless appearances.
At The Plate – The top of the order for the Smokies was outstanding, unfortunately there wasn’t much after that. Matt Szczur was tremendous in the lead-off spot going 3-for-4 with a run scored, all three hits were singles. Number two hitter Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-3 with a run scored, a home run, and three RBI’s. Johermyn Chavez was the only other Smokies player to record a hit, a single.
On The Mound – Dallas Beeler got knocked around in his first start of 2013, but had decent command. Beeler worked 5.1 innings, he gave up four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five. A.J. Morris tossed 1.2 innings giving up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out two. Tony Zych couldn’t keep it close late as he gave up two runs (both unearned) in his one inning of work while walking one and striking out one.
At The Plate – Kane County couldn’t really get anything going at the plate as they were only able to register five hits in the loss. Dan Vogelbach has a solid night going 2-for-4 with two singles. Jemier Candelario and Willson Contreras each had one hit, and Rock Shoulders was 1-for-4 with a run scored, a home run, and two RBI’s.
On The Mound – Pierce Johnson got the start and got beat up. Johnson gave up five runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five in 2.1 innings. Justin Amlung worked 2.1 innings giving up one run on two hits while walking two and striking out two. Brian Smith tossed two innings giving up one run on one hit while walking two and striking out four. Steve Perakslis and Eduardo Orozco each had a scoreless appearance.
At The Plate – A quiet night at the plate for the D-Cubs as they could only manage three runs on six hits, but they did walk five times which is a plus. Jorge Soler got his first full professional season off to a great start going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Zeke DeVoss was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored out of the lead-off spot. Timothy Saunders was 1-for-4 with a run scored, and an RBI double. Stephen Bruno was 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI double. Javier Baez rounded out the scoring with a sac-fly, he finished the night 0-for-3.
On The Mound – Ben Wells was knocked around early but managed to battle his way through four innings. Wells gave up two runs on seven hits, he didn’t walk anyone and struck out four to earn a no decision. Sheldon McDonald was hung with the loss as he went 2.2 innings giving up two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out three. Eduardo Figueroa was solid out of the pen giving up no runs on two hits while striking out two in 2.1 innings of work.

We Are Ready For Minor League Opening Day, Are You?
April 1st marks the beginning of the Major League season, that’s wonderful and great, but for me April 4th is just as exciting as the minor league teams open their campaigns. If you followed us last year you know what we are all about, we bring you a lot of information pertaining to prospects, and the lower level teams, that includes recaps.
