Felix Doubront did nothing to help his cause for the 5th spot in the rotation as he played a huge role in blowing an 8-3 lead today. The Cubs went on to lose to the Angels 10-9 but the story today, as it is most days now, was how the Cubs got their runs, hooray prospects! It was the Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler, and Addison Russell show as the three headed monster put on an impressive display with the bats. First the powerful results, Kris Bryant went deep twice, two monster shots, he finished the day 3-for-4 with two dingers, a book rule double, three RBI, and three runs scored. Jorge Soler joined the fun as well going 2-for-3 with his own bomb, two RBI, and a run scored. Russell was super impressive all over the field, he finished 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a couple of slick plays in the field. The pitching wasn’t so great today as Jason Hammel was beat up in addition to Doubront.

On a rainy Arizona day, Joe Maddon made some comments about the rotation. Kyle Hendricks will be in the rotation to start the season, there had been some speculation that he wasn’t ticketed for a rotation spot earlier on but that was unfounded. The news gives Cubs fans an idea of what will be happening this spring, an all out battle for the number five spot between Edwin Jackson, Travis Wood, Felix Doubront, Tsuyoshi Wada, and others, namely Jacob Turner.
The other news out of camp today… Jon Lester is your opening day starter. To me this was a done deal as soon as the Cubs committed loads of money to the lefty, but some fans thought that Jake Arrieta earned the chance to be that guy. Spring games start THIS THURSDAY, the rotation has been announced; Wood vs A’s, Turner vs SF on Thursday, Lester on Friday, Hammel/Doubront on Saturday; Arrieta/Wada on Sunday; Jackson/Hendricks on Monday.
In a bit of a surprising move, the Cubs have acquired LHP Felix Doubront from the Red Sox for a player to be named later. From multiple reports, including one out of Boston from CSN, the Red Sox were not expected to get much for Doubront. Another report has the teams holding off on naming the player to be named later until after the Rule Five draft.
Doubront has recently voiced his displeasure with the Red Sox organization, so the writing was on the wall. The Cubs jumping up to make a deal for him is the surprising part, as the Cubs are in full sell mode, and this is a player that has the potential to help now. Doubront has struggled this year and was demoted to the Sox bullpen just recently, probably one of the reasons why Doubront was unhappy.
Before this year, Doubront won eleven games for the Red Sox in back to back seasons, while posting an ERA of 4.86 in 2012, and 4.32 in 2013 while helping the Sox win the World Series. I think that the Cubs want Doubront back in the rotation, and he could be a solid contributor once Bosio gets his hands on him.
