Minor Matters – April 24, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – Another tough loss for the Smokies as they gave up a 3-2 lead in the 6th, then gave up two in the top of the ninth with the game tied at three. The Smokies were able to pull within one in the bottom of the ninth but that is as close as they would get. Matt Szczur was 1-for-4 with a walk, his eighth stolen base of the season, and two runs scored. Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk, his twelfth stolen base of the season, and a double. Ty Wrightwas 2-for-5 with a double, and two RBI’s in the loss.
On The Mound – Matt Loosen struggled with command but was able to pitch around some trouble. Loosen went 4.2 innings giving up two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three. Marcus Hatley worked 1.1 innings out of the pen giving up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out two. Tony Zych got the loss in this one, he went 2.1 innings giving up two runs on two hits while walking two. Frank Batista was good again as he kept the damage to a minimum in the ninth as he worked two-thirds scoreless.
That’s it, only one game today, not weather related either. How stupid is that?

Minor Matters – April 20, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)

Eight out of the nine Smokies players in the lineup last night had at least one hit. Matt Szczur is out to prove himself this year, and he’s doing it so far, he went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI’s, and two runs scored from the lead-off spot, he’s now hitting .302 on the season. Beeler went seven innings giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits while walking one and striking out three. Both Zach Rosscup and Frank Batista worked scoreless inning out of the pen with Rosscup striking out two and Batista striking out one.
At The Plate – The top of the order did all the damage in this one, unfortunately that wasn’t enough to knock off the Yankees. Timothy Saunders was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, and a two runs scored from the lead-off spot. John Andreoli, who is red-hot, went 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored, he’s now hitting .356 on the season. Javier Baez was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Jorge Soler went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI’s. The bottom five guys in the D-Cubs order went a combined 1-for-18 and Daytona as a team was 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
On The Mound – Ben Wells was okay in this one, but still took the loss, he went six innings giving up four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out six. Yeiper Castillo was dominant out of the pen working two scoreless, hit-less innings while striking out one. Sheldon McDonald didn’t fare as well in his inning of work, he gave up two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two.
At The Plate – The Cougars put this one to rest rather early as they jumped all over the River Bandits building a 6-1 lead in the fourth and cruised to a 7-3 win. Five different Cougars had multi-hit games in this one. Marco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and two runs scored. Eddie Orozco had some trouble closing things down, but he did, he worked one inning giving up two runs on three hits while striking out one.
At The Plate – Game two was much closer, but ended the same way, with a Cougars win as they swept the double-header. Daniel Vogelbach was 2-for-3 with a walk, and a run scored. But game two, and really the whole day belonged to Rock Shoulders, he was 3-for-3 in game two with his fourth home run of the season, three RBI’s and a run scored, his average now sits at .418 on the season after going 5-for-6 in the double-header. Minor Matters – April 16, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – You wouldn’t know it by the hit totals, but the I-Cubs won this one rather handily 4-3. Iowa only had three hits, and gave up ten, but that’s not what decides games. Ty Wright was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Ryan Sweeney had one of the other hits and it was a big one, he was 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple, and an RBI. J.C. Boscan had the biggest hit of the day as he was 1-for-3 with a double, and two RBI’s, definitely an odd game at the plate, but drawing four walks definitely helped.
On The Mound – Plenty of hits given up by the Cubs staff, but they didn’t walk anyone, and that was a huge reason they pulled this one out. Brooks Raley had a tremendous outing getting his first win of the season going six scoreless innings giving up six hits, and striking out seven. Yoanner Negrin continues to be untouchable out of the pen, he worked two scoreless innings only giving up two hits. Cory Wade worked the ninth and gave up one run on two hits while striking out two.
At The Plate – A back and forth game in Huntsville ended with the Smokies hanging on to win 4-3 over the Stars. Matt Szczur continues to be productive out of the lead-off spot, he went 2-for-3 with a home run, a stolen base, a caught stealing, an RBI, and a run scored. Justin Bour also joined in on the fun going 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Rubi Silva has been scorching hot all year and it was no different last night, he was 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored, he’s hitting .405 on the season now.
On The Mound – Alberto Cabrera got the start and his second win of the season as he went six innings giving up two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. A.J. Morris was solid out of the pen going two scoreless, and hitless innings while striking out three. Frank Batista worked the ninth for his second save, although he made it exciting, he worked one inning giving up one run on one hit while walking one.
At The Plate – All sorts of offense from Daytona but it wasn’t nearly enough in this one. Seven out of the nine players in the lineup had at least one hit. John Andreoli was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, two stolen bases, and one run scored. Javy Baez connected on his second homer of the season, he finished the day 1-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Stephen Bruno was 2-for-2 with two walks with a double, and a run scored. Dustin Geiger continues to stay hot going 2-for-3 with an RBI, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .310 on the season.
On The Mound – I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen anything like this in just nine innings. The D-Cubs staff gave up fifteen runs, that was low in my opinion seeing that they gave up twenty-seven hits, twenty-seven! Ryan Searle has been great this year, not last night, he went 4.2 innings giving up seven runs on fifteen(!) hits while striking out five, his ERA sits at 4.85 right now, a small miracle given how many runs he gave up. Hunter Cervenka and Luis Liria gave up a combined seven runs in 2.1 innings. Taylor Davis, a catcher, worked one inning giving up one run on four hits.
At The Plate - The Cougars had a thrilling comeback win in game one as they scored twice in the last two innings to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3. Gioskar Amaya was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Daniel Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and a run scored, with that two hit game his average climbed to .302 on the season. Jeimer Candelario was 1-for-3 with a big two run double to help the Cougars come all the way back.
On The Mound – Errors got the best of the Cougars early on and it showed in the pitching staff”s numbers. Jose Arias got the start and went four innings giving up three runs, all unearned, on four hits while walking three and striking out three. Jeffry Antigua was great out of the pen and was rewarded with his first win of the season. Antigue went three scoreless innings giving up two hits while walking one and striking out three.
At The Plate – No such comeback luck in this one from the Cougars as they were done in by a seven run second inning. Marco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, an error, and two runs scored. Wes Darvill was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Bijan Rademacher was 2-for-2 with a walk. The top three guys in the Cougars order went 0-for-10 in game two, and the Cougars went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
On The Mound – Michael Heesch got the start and didn’t get much help from his defense. Heesch went 1.2 innings giving up six runs, two earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out two. Brian Smith got beat up a little bit as he went 2.1 innins giving up two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two. Steve Perakslis and Nathan Dorris each tossed a scoreless inning in the loss.

Minor Matters – April 10, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – Hey! A Win! The I-Cubs got their first win of the 2013 season on Wednesday night. Ryan Sweeney was 2-for-5, the Cubs newcomer is now hitting .438 on the season. Edwin Maysonet was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Luis Flores was 1-for-4 with his first home run of the season.
On The Mound – Really nice night from a staff that has been beaten up in the early going. Drew Carpenter got the start and also walked away with the win going five innings giving up two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out four. Yoanner Negrin was great out of the pen going 2.2 innings giving up no runs on two hits while walking one and striking out two. Blake Parker was stout as well in earning his first save of the season going 1.1 innings giving up only one hit while walking none and striking out two.
At The Plate – Not a whole lot of offense in this one for the Smokies as they could only manage two runs on six hits. Rubi Silva was 2-for-4 with a double. Justin Bour was solid tonight going 1-f0r-2 with two walks, a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Arismendy Alcantara was 1-for-4 with a double and three strike outs in the loss.
On The Mound – Dallas Beeler had a really good outing, unfortunately he was still hung with the loss. Beeler went six innings giving up two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three. The normally reliable Kevin Rhoderick had a rough go of it as he gave up four runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of work, he also walked two. Frank Batista was solid out of the pen going 1.2 innings giving up no runs on two hits while striking out one.
At The Plate – Well, this one will be talked about for one thing, the incident involving Soler, I wrote about it earlier, you can read about it here, just going to recap the game now. Crazy game not counting fights as Daytona blew a two-run lead in the ninth and ended up losing by 5 in eleven. Zeke DeVoss had another solid night at the top of the lineup going 2-for-6 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. John Andreoli stayed red-hot going 3-for-6 with a double, he’s now hitting .478 on the season. Jorge Soler did some good work with the bat…at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a run scored. Stephen Bruno, Ben Carhart, and Taiwan Easterling all had two hits in this one. Dustin Geiger and Easterling both went deep for their first home run of the season.
On The Mound – Some good, some really bad for the D-Cubs. Ben Wells got the start and struggled with his command which cut his outing short. Wells went four innings giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking four and not striking out anyone. Austin Reed didn’t fare much better as he could only go one-third of an inning giving up three runs on two hits while walking two. Ryan Searle was outstanding again going 3.2 innings giving up no runs on one hit while walking one and striking out four. Luis Liria not only got the blown save but the loss as well as he went 2.2 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three.
At The Plate – The Cougars had an awesome approach at the plate today as they walked eight times, unfortunately they were only 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Jeimer Candelario didn’t have a hit in this one but he was able to walk three times. Daniel Vogelbach was 1-for-3 with a walk, and an RBI. Another day, another two hits for Rock Shoulders, he went 2-for-5 and is now hitting .467 on the season. Bijan Rademacher was 1-for-2 with two walks, and two runs scored in the loss. Trey Martin found some production today going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBI’s.
On The Mound – Remember how I mentioned how great the Cougars approach was because of the eight walks? Well Cougars pitching issued ten free passes, not good. Tayler Scott got the start and went two innings giving up four runs on three hits while walking five, he was slapped with the loss. Nathan Dorris was outstanding in this one going four scoreless innings giving up only one hit and striking out five. Steve Perakslis couldn’t keep things close as he went two innings giving up five runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three. I mentioned Bijan Rademacher already, well he got to pitch as well, he worked one inning giving up one run, unearned, on no hits while walking three, it was that kind of day.
What a weird day, thanks for reading,

Arias only went 1.2 innings giving up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits while walking none and struck out two. Nathan Dorris was the most effective Cougar going 2.1 innings giving up one run on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Starling Peralta got the start and pitched pretty good, but had one tough inning in which he gave up three runs on three hits, walked three, and struck out eight in 5.1. 8/25: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Saturday’s minor league recap.
It was a game of big innings early, until the ninth when the AZL Cubs walked off with another win, this time 8-7. Paul Blackburn started, but wasn’t at his best giving up three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Rafael Dolis and Jasvir Rakkar each pitched an inning allowing two runs a piece. Ethan Elias did a great job keeping the Giants at seven runs as pitched the next three innings allowing no runs on no hits, while walking two and striking out four. The good luck charm Steve Perakslis improved his record to 4-0 as he got the win after pitching a scoreless ninth. The Cubs had a lot of nice days offensively. Carlos Penalver and Yasiel Balaguert each had two hits and drove in two a piece. Ben Carhart was 2-for-6 with a walk off single and Shawon Dunston had one hit, a double and three RBIs. Trevor Gretzky and David Bote both contributed with two hits and combined two score three runs for the Cubs. Daniel Lockhart and Garrett Schlecht each had a hit and an RBI in the Cubs victory. The victory clinched a spot in the playoffs for the Cubs.
Boise got out to a quick start and held on to beat Vancouver 8-6. After a recent struggle Jeimer Candelario appears to have broken out as he went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Stephen Bruno stayed red-hot going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Dan Vogelbach also had two hits, including a double and an RBI. Wilson Contreras and Gioskar Amaya each had a hit with Contreras knocking in two and Amaya one. Albert Almora left the game early with an apparent injury, but I have no word yet as to what the problem was. Ian Dickson started, but did not factor in the decision as was only able to last 4.1 innings as he allowed four runs on seven hits. Hunter Ackerman did get the victory as he threw the next 2.2 innings giving up one run and striking out five. Eduardo Orozco got the ball to Nathan Dorris and Dorris closed out the win and the second half for Boise. With the victory Boise is the second half winners and are headed to the playoffs.
****
A three run fourth was enough for Joseph Zeller and the Cubs bullpen as they beat Wisconsin 3-2. Zeller pitched quite well giving up one run on seven hits in six innings. Sheldon McDonald pitched the next two innings allowing one run, but got the ball to Larry Suarez who notched his fifth save of the season striking out two in a scoreless ninth. Timothy Saunders had another nice night going 2-for-4 with a homer and a double. Chadd Krist also hit a home run, a two run shot in the fourth inning. Oliver Zapata had a hit, two walks, and two stolen bases and Zeke DeVoss also added a hit in the Chiefs win.

Daytona lost game one to Tampa 3-2. Although they only had three hits, they threatened late, but couldn’t finish. Ronald Torreyes, Elieser Bonne, and Vladimir Frias were the only Cubs to have hits on Saturday. Nelson Perez drove in the two Cubs runs in game one without the benefit of a hit. Eduardo Figueroa started, but took a no decision as didn’t give up a run in four inning, while striking out six. Matt Spencer took the loss as he really struggled with his command walking five and allowing all three of the Yankees runs to score in just 0.2 innings. Matt Iannazzo finished game one out throwing a scoreless 1.1 innings.
Daytona returned the favor in game two as Ryan Searle and staff only allowed three hits in a 4-1 win. Searle started and pitched pretty good going five innings allowing one run on three hits and striking out five. From there Jeff Lorick pitched a scoreless sixth and Scott Weismann notched his fourth save of the season throwing a perfect seventh. John Andreoli and Ronald Torreyes hit one-two in the order and set the table of the Cubs in this one. Torreyes was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. John Andreoli was also 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Rebel Ridling had two hits of his own and drove in one run and Nelson Perez drove in another run, again not having a hit. Nicholas Struck was in line for the win pitching seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned on six hits, while striking out six. Zach Rosscup did his job getting the ball to Frank Batista, but Batista couldn’t get the save in this one allowing the ninth inning run. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out six. Miguel Socolovich and Jeff Beliveau each pitched a perfect frame to get the ball to Jairo Asencio who struck out two and pitched a scoreless ninth to record his fifth save of the season.
