Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/21/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Crazy finish sees Peoria’s rally fall just short as they lost to Cedar Rapids 5-4 last night.  Tied at two for most of the game Cedar Rapids plated three runs in the bottom of the 8th to lead 5-2.  Peoria fought back with two runs in the top of the ninth but couldn’t come all the way back.  Michael Jensen pitched well enough for the win but finished his night with a no decision after 5 and 1/3rd innings of work.  Peoria couldn’t string any hits together, Paul Hoilman finished the night 2-for-5 and Oliver Zapata was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored.

FULL BOX SCORE

Matt Loosen was really good again for Daytona as he went 6 and 2/3rds while only allowing one run on two hits.  Loosen was in line for the loss but the D-Cubs pushed a run across in the 7th to tie it.  Trailing 3-1 into the bottom of the ninth the D-Cubs came all the way back and walked off to win 4-3.  Matt Szczur had a big hand in the win going 2-for-4 again as his average is now up to .265.  Arismendy Alcantara, Chad Noble, and John Andreoli all had two hits in the victory.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

For seven innings it looked like the Smokies were on their way to another win, but the bullpen couldn’t hold it as they surrendered five runs in the 8th en route to an 8-5 loss.  Dae-Eun Rhee was in line for the win after going six strong innings, giving up three runs on eight hits.  Junior Lake was 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk and a run scored, he is now hitting .283 on the season.  Rebel Ridling seems to be heating up as he went deep again for his fourth home run on the season, third in his last two games.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Jay Jackson didn’t have it last night as he only lasted three innings while giving up six runs on nine hits on his way to his fourth loss of the season as Iowa fell 8-2 to Tacoma.  Alfredo Amezaga was 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks, a double, and two runs scored.  Blake DeWitt and Juan Apodaca each had two hits in the loss.  The I-Cubs walked a total of 10 times, but only scored two times, inopportune to say the least.

5/20: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/20/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

The Chiefs needed extra innings to beat Cedar Rapids 9-6 on Sunday after they blew leads of 4-0 and 6-4 in the ninth.  Gerardo Concepcion had his second decent outing in a row and was in line for his second win before Cedar Rapids tied it in the ninth.  Concepcion went five innings while allowing four runs on six hits.  The Chiefs offense was in high gear as they pounded out 15 hits and 9 runs in the win.  Taylor Davis was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI’s.  Rafael Lopez, Paul Hoilman, Anthony Giansanti, and Oliver Zapata all had two hits.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Austin Kirk finally had a poor outing, probably my fault because I wrote about him last week.  Kirk had his shortest outing of the season going two and 1/3rd of an inning while allowing six runs to suffer his first loss of the season.  Kirk’s ERA still sits at a sparkling 2.68 after giving up six runs.  The D-Cubs couldn’t string together much at the plate as the top of the order had trouble getting on base.  Nelson Perez, and Elieser Bonne each had two hits in the losing effort.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Trey McNutt continued his solid season on Sunday as he went five innings to earn his second victory of the season.  McNutt gave up three runs, however only one was earned as he lowered his ERA to 2.67.  The middle of the order was once again productive for the Smokies.  Jae-Hoon Ha collected two more hits in the victory as he raised his average to .265 on the season.  Rebel Ridling had a huge day at the plate going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI’s.

 ***

FULL BOX SCORE

For the second straight day the Iowa Cubs couldn’t find any offense as they lost to Salt Lake 2-1.  Rodrigo Lopez was nearly un-hittable as he only allowed one hit over six innings or work, unfortunately he was tagged with a no decision.  Jeff Beliveau had a solid day out of the bullpen going two innings and striking out three.  The I-Cubs were only able to scratch out five hits and one run.  Brett Jackson was 1-for-5 with a double, and Josh Vitters was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

5/19: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/19/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

A wild second inning saw the Chiefs take a 4-0 lead in the top half, then trail 5-4 in the bottom half en route to a 7-6 loss to Cedar Rapids.   Kyler Burke made the start for Peoria and didn’t get much help from his defense.  Burke gave up six runs over five innings, however only three were earned as Burke finished with a no decision.  Pin-Chieh Chen went 1-for-3 at the plate with his first home run of the season, and three RBI’s.  Paul Hoilman and Taylor Davis each had two hits in the losing effort.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Daytona built up a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 5th, but couldn’t hold it as they surrendered five runs in said 5th en route to a 5-3 loss to Palm Beach.  Eric Jokisch started for the D-Cubs and probably had his worst outing of the season as he gave up five runs in just 4 and 2/3rds of an inning on his way to his fourth loss of the season.  Matt Szczur is on fire as he launched his first home run of the season while going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI’s, he also added a double for good measure.  Szczur now has his average up to .265 on the season thanks in part to him hitting .385 over his last 10 games.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies and Braves combined for 22 hits but only five total runs in a 3-2 Smokies win.  Dallas Beeler was just good enough to get his first win of the season as he went five innings giving up two runs on eight hits.  Jae-Hoon Ha was 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a walk and a run scored as the middle of the lineup did most of the damage.  Rebel Ridling and Justin Bour each finished with two hits, with Ridling driving in one, and Bour driving in two.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Not a good night for the I-Cubs as they were shut down by the Salt Lake Bees in a 6-1 defeat.  Iowa only managed three hits on the night as they couldn’t get anything going against the Bees staff.  Chris Rusin turned in a quality start going six innings while giving up three runs on seven hits but took his 3rd loss of the season.  Mike MacDougal who has done nothing but crap the bed since he was signed gave up two more runs over two innings of work, his ERA sits at 13.50.  Brett Jackson, Anthony Rizzo, and Josh Vitters each had a hit, and that was it for the Iowa offense.  Jackson had a triple and Rizzo had a double in the losing effort.

5/18: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/18/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

A late explosion of runs from Clinton was too much for the Chiefs to handle as they fell 8-2, with Clinton scoring six of their runs in the 7th and 8th inning.  Rafael Lopez was 2-for-4 at the plate in the losing effort as the Chiefs only had five hits total in the game.  Jose Rosario pitched well enough but couldn’t avoid being tagged with his 4th loss of the season.  Rosario only allowed two runs of 5 and 1/3rd and had nine strikeouts.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Daytona used some big time hitting to not only get back in a game they trailed early in but to win it, beating Palm Beach 8-4.  Matt Szczur was 2-for-5 at the plate, and had two stolen bases, which gives him a total of 18 on the season.  Arismendy Alcantara, Greg Rohan, and Richard Jones all had three hits to pace the D-Cubs attack with Jones driving in three runs.  Frank Del Valle was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst has he worked six solid innings for his third win of the season.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies couldn’t solve the Braves pitching as they fell 4-2 in Mississippi.  Jae-Hoon ha was 2-for-4 in the losing effort.  The only offense came from Luis Flores who was 1-for-2 with both Smokies RBI’s.  Nicholas Struck made it into the 7th inning but couldn’t make it out as he was handed his 4th loss of the season, he gave up four runs to elevate his ERA to 4.09 on the campaign.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

The Iowa Cubs couldn’t hang on to an early 3-0 lead as the ended up falling to Salt Lake 5-4 in 10 innings.  The I-Cubs made it interesting in the bottom of the 10th as they has 1st and 3rd with two outs with Rizzo up but he flew out to end the game.  Rizzo finished the game going 1-for-5 with a double, Alfredo Amezaga chipped in with his 3rd home run of the season.  Frankie De La Cruz pitched well enough to win but didn’t get any help from his pen as he walked away with a no decision.

5/17: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/17/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

One day after seeing their five game winning streak end the Peoria Chiefs got right back into the win column beating Clinton 4-3.  Patrick Francescon was tremendous once again for Peoria going six innings and only allowing one unearned run on two hits.  Francescon improves to 5-1 on the season while lowering his ERA to a sparkling 1.86.  Pin-Chieh Chen went 2-for-5 at the plate, while Marco Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, and two runs scored.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Palm Beach jumped on Daytona early and often en route to an 8-2 victory.  Zach Cates struggled yet again as he surrendered four runs, three earned in 2 and 2/3rds innings.  Cates falls to 0-6 on the season with his ERA sitting at a robust 10.50.  Cates didn’t really get much help from his offense either as the D-Cubs only put up two runs on four hits.  Greg Rohan was 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, a triple and a run scored.  Nelson Perez added his 6th home run of the season.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Brooks Raley was really good again for the Smokies as he went five strong innings to pick up his second win of the season in a 3-2 victory over Mississippi.  The Smokies didn’t have a lot of offense but three runs on five hits was just enough.  James Adduci was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored as he raised his average to .306 on the season.  Logan Watkins provided the big hit for the Smokies, a two-run single in the 5th inning to put Tennessee up for good.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

It was a prospect showcase tonight in Iowa as the I-Cubs beat Salt Lake 7-5.  Anthony Rizzo, Brett Jackson, and Josh Vitters all went deep in the victory.  I should probably stop writing about Rizzo hitting home runs every night, it should just be assumed.  Dave Sappelt was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.  Back to Jackson, he finished the night a double short of the cycle going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Travis Wood was really good, and might have earned a call up to the Cubs rotation after his effort and Volstad’s horrid start.  Wood went seven strong innings only allowing two runs on five hits while walking just one.

Minor League Picture of the Night (much better than last night in Daytona)

FULL BOX SCORE

Tremendous effort from Gerardo Concepcion this afternoon for Peoria.  Concepcion went six strong innings to earn his first pro victory in a 2-0 win over Burlington.  Break up the Chiefs, they have now won 5 straight games to turn their season around.  Zeke DeVoss put on a show on the base paths today.  DeVoss went 2-for-2 with two walks, and two runs scored, oh, he also had four stolen bases, not a bad day.

***

Another rain out, totally stupid.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

For the second straight day the Tennessee Smokies pounded the ball all over the place en route to a win over the Jackson Generals.  Today’s effort included 12 hits and 10 runs as that was just enough for a 10-8 victory.  Junior Lake is on a tear since returning from the DL, he went 3-for-5 today with a double, a run, and three RBI’s.  Justin Bour joined the fun going 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI’s.  Dae-Eun Rhee didn’t have his best stuff, but he didn’t get any help from his defense.  Rhee only lasted four innings, allowing six runs, only two earned however, good enough for a no decision.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Anthony Rizzo is making it very hard for the powers that be to ignore him.  Rizzo went 3-for-4 today with his 13th home run of the season, he added a triple for good measure.  He also had two more RBI’s which bring his season total to 37.  Randy Wells continued his career meltdown giving up seven runs, all earned in five innings of work to earn his second loss of the season.  Mike MacDougal, who was just signed by the Cubs today, showcased his talents in 2/3rds of an inning by walking four guys and allowing two runs in mop up duty of a 9-4 loss.

5/14: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/14/12, enjoy.

Kyler Burke was good again on the mound for Peoria, unfortunately he left with a no decision after six strong innings of work.  Austin Kirk took over and was awesome, going two innings to come out with the win as Peoria knocked off Burlington for their fourth straight victory.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4, which accounted for 1/3rd of Peoria’s hits in the victory.

***

All the scoring in this game took place in the first innings as Daytona scratched out a 2-1 victory over Brevard County.  Nelson Perez was the only offense for Daytona as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s.  Austin Kirk was stellar on the mound for Daytona, what else is new.  Kirk went seven strong innings only yielding one run on six hits.  Kirk improved to 2-0 and dropped his ERA to 1.75 on the season.  Tony Zych came on in the 9th and shut the door for his fourth save of the season.

FULL BOX SCORE GAME 1
FULL BOX SCORE GAME 2

Game 1:  The Smokies made up for a season’s worth of frustration against Jackson by pounding out 13 hits and scoring 15 runs to beat the Generals.  Logan Watkins and Rebel Ridling each had 4 RBI’s, and Michael Burgess chipped in with 3 of his own.  Junior Lake hit his first home run of the season en route to a 2-for-2 day in which he scored four runs.  Lost in all of the offense was Trey McNutt’s longest outing of the season as he went 5 strong innings for the win.

Game 2:  This game resembled the typical Smokies-Generals matchup.  The Generals pitching was too much for the Smokies, especially after that outburst in the first game.  The Smokies only managed one run on seven hits in the defeat.  Dallas Beeler went complete, well 7 innings which is how long the game lasted, but ended up with the loss.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Another game, and another bomb from Anthony Rizzo, his 12th of the season already.  That was enough for Rodrigo Lopez as he was awesome going five strong innings to pick up his first win of the season.  Blake Lalli hit a solo home run in the 5th to extend the lead and give the I-Cubs just enough to come out on top 3-1.  Scott Maine came on in the 9th inning to close the door earning his 2nd save of the season.

Anthony Rizzo really can’t do much else at AAA, it really is a matter of time before the future major league star is called up to the big club.  All Rizzo did today was go 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored, that now brings Rizzo’s average to .351 on the season.  Ty Wright had himself a day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI’s.  Chris Rusin was stellar on the mound for Iowa going 8 spotless innings to get his 4th win of the season, he is now 4-2 and his ERA dropped to 2.83.

5/12: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/12/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Patrick Francescon has been lights out for a while now, he continued that trend tonight as he improved to 4-1 after tossing 7 and 1/3rds of an inning while only allowing one unearned run.  Francescon had to be every bit of good too, because the Chiefs couldn’t get much going offensively.  They only managed to record two runs on six hits, but it was good enough for the win.  Marco Hernandez had two hits on the night, and Wes Darvill had the only RBI for the Chiefs.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Erik Jokisch was outstanding for the D-Cubs going 6 strong innings en route to his third victory of the season while improving his ERA to 2.90.  Jokisch didn’t have too many difficult spots at all as he only allowed four hits, and no walks while striking out five.  The D-Cubs put up just enough offense for Jokisch as they plated four runs on ten hits.  Rubi Silva was 2-for-4 with an RBI, his average now sits at .306 on the season.  Arismendy Alcantara, Richard Jones, Elieser Bonne each had two hits in the victory.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Nothing new in Tennessee as the Smokies fall to the Generals yet again, just something about those Generals.  Nicholas Struck kept the Smokies in the game for as long as he could, but his luck ran out in the 6th as he gave up three runs to end his night.  Struck was hung with the loss, his 3rd of the season, he now sits at 4-3.  Not much offense for the Smokies yet again, Junior Lake was 1-for-3, and Michael Burgess, and Justin Bour each had two hits in the loss.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Iowa battled back from an early 3-0 hole to tie the game in the 5th, but ended up losing in the bottom of the ninth 4-3.  Esmailin Caridad did his best Carlos Marmol impression in the 9th inning as he was only able to retire one batter and walked three guys en route to the loss.  Alfredo Amezaga had a big day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI’s in the loss.  Luis Valbuena and newly promoted Jonathan Mota also had two hits for the I-Cubs.

***

Rain outs are dumb.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies faced the Generals tonight and I will give you one guess as to what happened.  You’re right, the Smokies were shut down completely, except for a run in the ninth inning on their way to a 2-1 loss.  Brooks Raley did everything he could to get a win for the Smokies, but he ended up getting the loss.  Raley went 7 strong innings, only allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven.  He falls to 1-2 and improves his ERA to 3.50 on the season.  Nate Samson had another big night going 3-for-4, unfortunately he couldn’t get any at bats with guys on base.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Anthony Rizzo continued his unreal 2012 with his 11th home run of the season in a 6-5 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies.  Josh Vitters and Ty Wright also went deep for Iowa as the Cubs pounded out 11 hits and six runs.  Travis Wood was pretty good on the mound going six strong innings to earn his second win of the season.  Blake Parker did some tight rope walking in the 9th inning, but earned his 4th save of the year after giving up two runs to make it close.
