7/4: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Happy 4th of July from the Cubs minor leagues.

FULL BOX SCORE

Boise lost to Tri-City on Wednesday 5-3.  Despite the loss there were a couple bright spots for the Hawks.  Chadd Krist was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  Rock Shoulders also went 3-for-4 with a double and had two RBI’s.  Dong-Yub Kim had a double and an RBI.  Stephen Bruno and Bijan Rademacher each added a hit and Rademacher also scored a run.  Wellington Cruz got the start and took the loss.  His record now stands at 1-2.  Felix Pena was really good out of the bullpen striking out two and allowing only a hit in four innings pitched.

Peoria had a nice win topping Burlington 8-2.  There was a lot of good things happening at the plate Wednesday for the Chiefs.  Dustin Geiger was 2-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI’s.  Oliver Zapata was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI’s and Taiwan Easterling was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI.  Javier Baez had one hit, drove in a run, and scored one and Zeke DeVoss added a triple.  Benefiting from the eight runs Michael Jensen earned his eighth win.  he pitched six innings giving up two runs, one earned on six hits while striking out five.  Austin Reed struck out three in two innings of relief and Yao-Lin Wang pitched a scoreless ninth to secure Peoria’s victory.

Daytona got the scoring started in the first, but failed to score after that losing to Dunedin 5-2.  Rubi Silva was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  Rebel Ridling also had two hits including a two-run double in the first.  Ronald Torreyes and Elieser Bonne each recorded two hits of their own.  Robert Whitenack only lasted 3.1 innings giving up five runs, four earned on four hits, while striking out five and walking two.  Edwardo Figueroa and Jeffrey Lorick did a great job in relief, only allowing one hit and one walk while striking out five in the final 4.2 innings.

Tennessee lost a close one on Wednesday 4-3.  Greg Rohan hit his first home run since moving to Double-A, and he also drove in two runs.  Justin Bour was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Elliot Soto also had two hits.  Jae-Hoon Ha and James Adduci each had a hit and scored a run on Wednesday.  Dallas Beeler took the loss giving up four runs, three earned on nine hits in 4.1 innings.  Casey Harman and Ty’relle Harris pitched well in relief.  Each gave up a hit, but did not give up a run in the next 4.2 innings of the game.

Iowa got the crap beat out of them on Wednesday losing to Omaha 11-2.  Rodrigo Lopez was aweful allowing eight runs, six earned on 11 hits in just 4.1 innings pitched.  Mike MacDougal was terrible once again giving up two runs in one inning pitched.  One has to wonder how much longer MacDougal will be pitching for this organization as his ERA now stands at 7.85.  Esmailin Caridad struck out four in 2.2 innings, but he also gave up one run and Jeff Beliveau pitched a scoreless ninth.  There weren’t too many bright spots, but Brett Jackson was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s hitting out of the five spot tonight.  Adrian Cardenas was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Matt Tolbert also added two hits.  Josh Vitters and Dave Sappelt each added a hit and Sappelt scored a run.

7/2: Around the Cubs Minor League System

July 2nd Minor League recaps.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, but gave up two in the bottom half to lose 5-4.  In the defeat Dan Vogelbach had two hits including his second home run in as many days.  He drove in two on the day.  Cubs also had two hit performances out of Timothy Saunders, Daniel Lockhart, Ben Carhart, and Trevor Gretzky.  To go with his two hits Lockhart also drove in two and had a run scored.  Hunter Ackerman pitched three scoreless innings striking out three in the start.  Jin-Young Kim took the loss giving up two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth.  It was a tough loss for the Cubs, but hopefully they can come back strong in the next one.

 Boise gave up two runs in the bottom of the eigth and lost to Tri-City 7-5.  Despite the loss Gioskar Amaya was 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI’s.  Stephen Bruno also had two hits with a run scored and two RBI’s.  The Hawks also got hits from Jeimer Candelario, Chadd Kris, and Bijan Rademacher.  Starting pitcher Taylor Scott was pitching rather well until the fifth when he and Hayden Simpson combined to give up four runs and Simpson gave up one more in the sixth.  Tri-City completed the comeback in the eighth as Su-Min Jung gave up two runs and took the loss.

Not a good night all around the Peoria losing to Kane County 6-0.  Starting pitcher Jose Rosario had a rough second inning giving up five runs, but really settled down and ended up pitching seven innings.  In those seven innings he gave up six runs, four earned on ten hits while striking out seven.  Sheldon McDonald threw two really nice innings out of the bullpen striking out three and allowing only a walk.  Offensively there wasn’t much to talk about.  The Chiefs were only able to muster up three hits.  Those getting hits on Monday were Zeke DeVoss, Paul Hoilman, and Pin-Chieh Chen.

Daytona scored six runs in the sixth to win 7-3.  Elieser Bonne was 3-for-3 with a run scored and Matt Cerda was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.  Micah Gibbs also drove in two runs, and Rebel Ridling and John Andreoli each drove in one a piece.  P.J. Francescon to his first win of the season giving up three runs on five hits in six innings of work.  Ryan Searle and Brian Schlitter didn’t allow a run combining to strike out two in the last three innings of game.

Tennessee scored a lot early and one late holding on to beat Chattanooga 6-4.  Recent call-up Greg Rohan was 4-for-4 with two double, two RBI’s and one run scored.  Smokies also had two hits from Jae-Hoon Ha, Junior Lake, and Michael Burgess.  To go with Rohan’s two RBI’s the Smokies also had an RBI a piece from Justin Bour, Lake, and Ha.  Dae-Eun Rhee wasn’t great but he was good enough to get his fifth win of the season.  Tony Zych and Ty’relle Harris combined to pitch three innings and striking out three.  Frank Batista came on in the ninth to close the game, striking out one to record his 14th save of the season.

It was a scoreless game headed to the bottom of the seventh when Nashville scored four.  They ended up holding on to win 4-1 on Monday.  Chris Rusin got the start and was pretty good throwing six scoreless innings while striking out five.  Jeff Beliveau took the loss in relief giving up four runs in only .1 innings pitched.  Although the Cubs only were able to score one, there were some good things that happened.  Josh Vitters was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in the only Cubs run of the day.  Matt Tolbert and Dave Sappelt each had two hits on Monday and Brian Esposito was the only other Cub to record a hit.

7/1: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A look at the Cubs minor leaguers on Sunday, July 1.

FULL BOX SCORE 

The AZL Cubs held on to beat the AZL Athletics 9-7 on Sunday.  Dan Vogelbach kept up his torrid pace going 4-for-5 with a triple, homer, two runs scored, and three RBI’s.  He is now hitting .471.  Timothy Saunders had two more hits and and also drove in one run.  His average now stands at .483.  Carlos Escobar and Izaac Garsez each had two hits and a run scored on Sunday.  Ben Carhart and Carlos Penalver each had an RBI in the victory.  Nathan Dorris got the win pitching a scoreless inning in relief and Alvido Jimenez recorded his first save of the young season.

In a well pitched game Boise came up short losing 2-1 to Tri-City in ten innings.  Rafael Diplan struggled with his comand walking three in .2 of an inning to take the loss.  James Pugliese got the start and struck out five in four scoreless innings.  Eduardo Orozco and Michael Heesch each pitched two scoreless inning on Sunday.  Not much to talk about offensively in this one as Boise could only plate one.  The lone RBI came off the bat of Dong-Yub Kim who was 2-for-4 with game-tying solo homer in the seventh.  Jeimer Candelario and Chadd Krist continued their hot hitting as Candelario had two hits and Krist had three.

Starling Peralta pitched eight solid innings allowing three runs, two earned on four hits, but took the loss as Peoria lost to Kane County 7-2.  As good as Peralta was Larry Suarez was not so good in relief giving up four runs in one inning of work.  The offense didn’t do much damage, but Taiwan Easterling was 3-for-3 and Dustin Geiger had two hits of his own.  Chiefs got RBI’s from Zeke DeVoss and Wes Darvill.  Top prospect Javier Baez collected a hit and scored a run.

Matt Loosen and Daytona fell to Lakeland 5-3 on Sunday.  Loosen started and gave up four runs, three earned in six innings pitched.  A.J. Morris pitched well in relief striking out two in two innings of work.  From an offensive standpoint Daytona couldn’t get much done recording only four hits.  Rebel Ridling was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI.  Matt Szczur also had a double, scored a run, and drove one in.  The other Cubs hit came from Elieser Bonne and the other RBI came off the bat of John Andreoli.

Tennessee couldn’t get much going at the plate and fell to Chattanooga 3-0.  Nicholas Struck pitched well enough to win, but took the loss, giving up two runs, one earned in five innings pitched.  Casey Harman and Casey Weathers each pitched in relief.  Not too much excitement from the offense, but Justin Bour was 3-for-4 with two doubles.  Nate Samson had two hits of his own and Jae-Hoon Ha and Juan Apodaca each had a hit on the night.

 Iowa’s frantic rally comes up short on Sunday dropping a high scoring game to Nashville 13-12.  At one point the Cubs were down by nine runs headed to the sixth, but after scoring eight runs in three innings, they failed to score in the ninth.  Offensively Iowa pounded out 16 hits and 12 runs.  Adrian Cardenas and Josh Vitters each had three hits, including two doubles a piece, two runs scored, and an RBI.  Blake Lalli also had three hits including a double, two runs scored, and three RBI’s.  Dave Sappelt hit his fourth home run of the year and Matt Tolbert drove in two runs and also two hits.  Brett Jackson raised his average to .261 going 2-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs scored, and two RBI’s.  Frankie De La Cruz got the start and, but didn’t last long giving up nine runs, seven earned in just 4.1 innings pitched.  Jay Jackson threw another scoreless inning out of the bullpen and also struck two out.  Michael Bowden struck out three in a scoreless inning.

6/30: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A look at the Cubs minor leagues on Saturday, June 30.

FULL BOX SCORE 

Another game for the AZL Cubs and more runs scored as the Cubs won 12-8.  Some of the highlights at the plate were Daniel Vogelbach going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored.  Carlos Penalver also went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBI’s.  Isaac Garesz and Neftali Rosario had two hits a piece.  Rosario had two RBI’s as did Garrett Schlect.  Justin Berg got the start, but did not factor in the win.  David Henrie did get the win pitching four innings giving up three runs, one earned on five hits.

Boise got the bats going on Saturday beating Spokane 12-6.  Stephen Bruno went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Jeimer Candelario was 3-for-5 with a double, run scored, and two RBI’s.  Bijan Rademacher had three hits and Chadd Krist also added two hits of his own.  Xavier Batista and Shawon Dunston Jr. each added an RBI on the night.  Jose Arias was not real sharp, but got his first win of the year.  Pete Levitt recorded his first save of the year and Michael Hamann pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Peoria took the loss on Saturday losing to Wisconsin 9-5.  Zach Cates struggled only lasting four innings givine up five runs, four earned on six hits, while striking out five.  Zachary Rosscup pitched well in relief striking out five and only giving up one hit in two innings.  Offensively Oliver Zapata was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  The Chiefs also got RBI’s from Pin-Chieh Chen, Dustin Geiger, Paul Hoilman, and Yasiel BalaguertJavier Baez was 1-for-4 with a run scored as well.

Kyler Burke took the loss as Daytona fell to Dunedin 5-2.  Burke only lasted four innings giving up two runs, one earned on three hits in four innings.  He struggled with his control walking four, but he also struck out six.  Matthew Spencer and Eduardo Figueroa each pitched two innings and each gave up runs.  Brian Schlitter pitched well in his one inning out of the bullpen.  There wasn’t much excitement at the plate either as the Cubs could only muster five hits.  Two of those hits came off the bat of John AndreoliArismendy Alcantara, Rebel Ridling, and Rubi Silva had the other Daytona hits and Elieser Bonne had contributed with an RBI.

Logan Watkins hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eight which proved to be the game winner as Tennessee won 3-2.  Michael Burgess also connected hitting his ninth homer of the year.  James Adduci drove in the other Smokies run and Jae-Hoon Ha contributed with two hits including a double.  Erik Jokish was pretty good, but did not factor in the decision.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out five in seven innings.  Kevin Rhoderick who had been struggling of late got the win in relief striking out one in two perfect innings of relief.

Despite a late rally Iowa fell short losing to Nashville 4-3.  Down 4-0 entering the top of the ninth Iowa scored three runs including a solo home run off the bat of Brett Jackson.  Jackson added a double earlier ending the night with two hits and a stolen base.  Blake Lalli connected on a two-run homer in the ninth, his sixth of the season.  Dave Sappelt had two hits and a run scored.  Brooks Raley took the loss giving up one run on four hits in five innings.  Ryan Rowland-Smith and Mike MacDougal each gave up runs in relief, but Jeff Beliveau pitched well striking out four in 1.2 innings pitched.

6/29: Around the Cubs Minor Leagues

A trip around the minor leagues on Friday, June 29.

FULL BOX SCORE

Boise dropped the game on Friday 4-1.  Wellington Cruz pitched well for the Hawks, but took the loss.  He gave up one run on three hits while striking out five in five innings of work.  Felix Pena struggled in relief and Bryce Shafer pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings.  Stephen Bruno was the only Hawks player to have multiple hits going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.  He also scored the lone run when Jeimer Candelario drove him in in the ninth.

Peoria took a tough loss as they lost 8-7 to Wisconsin.  Things started out greatas Peoria took a 6-1 lead, but Micahel Jensen and the defense would give up the lead in the fourth.  Jensen gave up six runs, three earned on six hits in five innings pitched.  Luis Liria took the loss in relief giving up the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.  The Cheifs got two hits a piece from Javier Baez, Anthony Giansanti, and Yasiel Balaguert.  The RBI’s for Peoria came from Taiwan Easterling, Paul Hoilman, Pin-Chieh Chen, and Giansanti.  This was a tough loss for Peoria, but hopefully they can come back strong in the next one.

It was a crazy one in Daytona tonight, as Dunedin scored eight times in the last four innings, including three in the ninth to beat the Cubs 11-10.  Scott Weismann blew his second save of the season and took his third loss giving up three runs in the bottom of the ninth.  Frank Del Valle got the start and he gave up five runs in 5.2 innings.  As bad as the pitching was on Friday, the offense was good.  Matt Szczur, Arismendy Alcantara, Rubi Silva, and Elieser Bonne all had two hits.  Ronald Torreyes went 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two runs scored, and an RBI on the night.  Szczur and Alcantara each drove in two runs and Greg Rohan drove in two bringing his season total to 65.

A lot of runs were scored, but Tennessee hung on to beat Birmingham 10-8.  Dallas Beeler got his third win of the season giving up two runs and striking out four in five innings of work.  Marcus Hatley had a rough night in relief, but Frank Batista was good once again recording his 13th save.  Justin Bour was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI’s.  Logan Watkins, Jae-Hoon Ha, Juan Apodaca, Matt Cerda, and Michael Burgess all had two hit games as well.   Apodaca, and Burgess also had three RBI’s.  On a day where Junior Lake went 0-for-4 it was nice to see the Tennessee offense put up 10 runs.

6/28: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Your nightly trip around the bases for June 28th, 2012.

FULL BOX SCORE

AZL Cubs had a nice night winning 11-2.  Jacob Rogers had a great night at the plate going 4-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored, and four RBI’s.  Trey Martin had three hits and three RBI’s on Thursday.  Ben Carhart and Carlos Penalver each had two hits.  Dan Vogelbach and Justin Marra each had a double and drove in a run.  Carlos Martinez-Pumarino got the win pitching five innings in relief giving no runs on three hits while striking out five.  Nathan Dorris and Ryan Hartman each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.  Hope to see more nights like this from the Cubs as the summer goes forward.

We have been waiting, and Boise finally delivered beating Spokane 12-2.  Chadd Krist was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and one driven in.  Wilson Contreras also was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three driven in.  Stephen Bruno had two hits with a run scored and an RBI.  Dong-Yub Kim hit his second home run of the season, a grand slam.  Ian Dickson was the beneficiary of all those runs earning his first win of the season pitching five innings, giving up two runs, one earned on four hits, while striking out six.  Eduardo Orozco, Rafael Diplan, and Su-Min Jung all pitched well in relief.  All in all it was a very good night for the Hawks.

Gerardo Concepcion was roughed up early, giving up four runs in the first, but settled down as he pitched six inning giving up five runs on six hits.  He took the loss and is now 2-6 with a 7.39 ERA.  Javier Baez had a great night at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and three stolen bases.  Dustin Geiger, Taiwan Easterling, and Oliver Zapata all had RBI’s on the night and Paul Hoilman had two hits.  Larry Suarez also struggled in relief giving up two runs on four hits in two innings of work.

It was a great night for the Daytona offense beating Dunedin 14-4.  Cubs got home runs from Ronald Torreyes, Arismendy Alcantara, and Rebel Ridling.  Arismendy went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI’s.  Rubi Silva was also 3-for-5 including two doubles and drove in two.  Lead-off hitter Matt Szczur was on base five times.  He was 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI’s, three stolen bases, and three runs scored.    Robert Whitenack got the start but didn’t get the win pitching only four innings while giving up three runs, only one earned on six hits while striking out four.  A.J. Morris got the win in relief pitching two scoreless innings while striking out one.  Brian Schlitter threw another good outing in relief pitching a scoreless ninth.

Trey McNutt was not able to get out of the first inning on Friday pitching only .2 inning and giving up eight runs, four earned on six hits.  Ty’relle Harris threw four quality innings of relief giving up two runs, one earned on five hits, while striking out two.  The Smokies were pretty good at the plate scoring six runs on twelve hits.  Jae-Hoon Ha, Junior Lake, Michael Brenly, and Elliot Soto all had two hits on the night.  Nelson Perez and Brenly each hit a home run.  The Smokies also had RBI’s from Ha, Lake, Justin Bour, and James Adduci.

Chris Volstad pitched pretty good on Friday, but it wasn’t enough for Iowa losing 3-1.  Volstad gave up three runs, two earned on six hits in seven innings.  He also struck out seven and walked zero.  Matt Tolbert was great at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and a run scored.  Adrian Cardenas, Ty Wright, and Blake Lalli each had two hits.  Josh Vitters was finally held hitless and Brett Jackson went 1-for-5.  Jay Jackson struck out two and didn’t allow a baserunner in one inning of work out of the bullpen.

6/26: Around the Cubs Minor Leagues

A look at the minor league system for Tuesday, June 26.

 FULL BOX SCORE

 The Cubs lost 9-4 to the Dodgers on Tuesday night.  The Offense for the Cubs was pretty good as they had 10 hits and four runs.  Left fielder Trey Martin Led off on Tuesday and went 3-for-5 including a double and two runs scored.  Dan Vogelbach went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to raise his average to .412.  Bijan Rademacher hit his first home run of the season and Daniel Lockhart had a triple and had an RBI.  Alvido Jimenez struggled big time and took the loss on Tuesday.  Michael Hamann, Ethan Elias, and Daniel Adrian all pitched well in relief.

Daytona took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth, but ended up losing a heartbreaker 4-3 in 12 innings.  The Cubs got a nice outing out of P.J. Francescon who gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings.  Ryan Searle took the loos out of the bullpen giving up one run in 2.2 innings.  The offense had 11 hits, three of which cam off the bat of Elieser Bonne, who also scored a run.  John Andreoli and Rebel Ridling each had two hits and Ridling added two RBI’s.  The other RBI came off the bat of Arismendy Alcantara.

The bats came alive for Tennessee beating Birmingham 11-6 on Tuesday.  The Smokies pounded out 15 hits and hit four home runs.  Michael Burgess hit two of those four homers in a game where he went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and four runs scored.  Michael Brenly also had a very nice night going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, three runs scored, and two RBI’s.  Jae-Hoon Ha had two hits including his third homer of the season, he also had three RBI’s.  Logan Watkins, Justin Bour, and James Adduci all had two hits and Watkins added two RBI’s as well.  Nicholas Struck got his ninth win of the season.  He gave allowed four runs, only one of which was earned in six innings.  Frank Batista pitched two innings striking out two batters in route to his 12th save of the season.

 In their first game with Anthony Rizzo in Chicago Iowa lost 3-1.  Frankie De La Cruz got the loss as he gave up three runs in five innings of work.  Ryan Rowland-Smith and Michael Bowden pitched well out of the bullpen on Tuesday.  Offensively there wasn’t much happening for Iowa.  Juan Apodaca went 2-for-4 with two doubles raising his average to .330.  Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters each added a hit and Blake Lalli had the only Cubs RBI on the day.

6/25: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A closer look at very busy Monday for the Cubs minor leagues.


FULL BOX SCORE

Down 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, The AZL Cubs scored four and added another in the eighth to win 6-4.  After going 6-for-6 on Saturday Timothy Saunders stayed hot as he had two more hits bringing his average to .526.  Trey Martin had two doubles with a run scored and an RBI.  Jacob Rogers also went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI’s.  Daniel Vogelbach hit his fourth double on the young season and he also scored a run.  Eduardo Orozco got the win in relief striking out two batters and Jin-Young Kim pitched two perfect innings to record his first save of the season.

 Boise just couldn’t get the bats going as they lost 4-1 to Spokane on Monday.  On the bright side Gioskar Amaya went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored raising his average to .386.  Marco Hernandez had a double and had the only RBI of the night.  Jeimer Candelario, Wilson Contreras, and Rock Shoulders all had one hit on the night.  Jose Arias pitched well again as he gave up one run on three hits in five innings of work.  Amaury Paulino took the loss giving up three runs on two hits in two innings.

Peoria scored a run in the eighth to win a nail biter 2-1.  Anthony Giansanti was the hero delivering the game winning RBI.  He entered the game after Javier Baez left with an injury.  It sounds like everything will be fine with Baez and he is day-to-day.  Wes Darvill had two hits and Yasiel Balaguert had a nice night at the plate going 2-for-3.  Dustin Geiger had the other Chiefs RBI in the third inning.  Zachary Rosscup got the win in relief pitching 2.1 innings while only giving up a hit and striking out two.  Luis Liria recorded his third save as he pitched the last two innings giving up one hit and striking one batter out.  Zach Cates got the start and allowed one run on five hits in 4.2 innings.

Daytona won both games of the double header on Monday.  The Cubs won the first game 7-3 highlighted by a five run second.  Arismendy Alcantara went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI’s in the winning effort.  He also stole his 22nd bag of the year.  Micah Gibbs and John Andreoli each had two hits and a run scored.  Matt Szczur had a hit and stole his 21st base of the season.  Taylor Davis had a double and drove in two runs, Rebel Ridling and Rubi Silva each had RBIs as well.  Matt Loosen got his sixth win of the year, giving up three runs on two hits in six innings while striking out seven.

Game two was not so easy, as Daytona tied the game with three runs in the sixth and won it in the 12th.  Dustin Harrington was the hero as he drove in Ronald Torreyes, who represented the game winning run.  Matt Szczur went 2-for-4 with a double, run, RBI, two walks, and his 22 stolen base.  Chad Noble had two doubles and a run scored and Harrington had two hits as well.  Alantara and Silva had the other two RBI’s for the Cubs.  Kyler Burke, who had been pitching for Peoria got the start for Daytona.  In his first outing he pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two.  The Cubs bullpen was outstanding as they pitched seven scoreless innings.  They gave up only one hit and struck out nine.  Scott Weismann got the win as he struck out four in three innings of work.  Eduardo Figuerora closed the game out recording his first save of the season.

 Tennessee had two games on Monday as well, but they did not go as well as Daytona.  The Smokies lost the first game 11-3.  This game was lost on the mound as Eric Jokisch really, really struggled as he gave up 10 runs nine earned on nine hits in 5.2 innings.  Unbelievably his ERA jumped all the way to 3.38.  That is how good he has been so far.  Jae-Hoon Ha and Junior Lake each had two hits.  Lake had a double and drove in two.  Michael Burgess had a double and drove in the other Smokies run in game one.

 Game one was bad, but game two was not much better as Jacksonville beat Tennessee 10-3.  Dallas Beeler got the start giving up one run in 3.1 innings, but did not factor in the decision.  Keven Rhoderick got the loss as he gave up five runs in .2 innings of work.  Marcus Hatley and Casey Harman didn’t have much better luck as each gave up two runs.  Justin Bour, Nelson Perez, and Nate Samson drove in the three Smokies runs in game two.  Junior Lake also had another hit and his average now sits at .315.

On a day that will be remembered as Anthony Rizzo‘s last game at Iowa, the Cubs played quite a good game winning 2-1.  Brooks Raley got the start and pitched beautifully throwing seven great innings.  He gave up one run on only five hits as he struck out five and got the win.  Jay Jackson pitched another good inning in relief striking out three.  Rafael Dolis took another step in the right direction recording his third save since going to Iowa.  Offensively Josh Vitters has been on an absolute tear as he was all the offense the Cubs would need.  He had an RBI hit in the first inning and hit his 12th home run of the year in the third.  It proved to be the game winner and Vitters is now hitting .292.

A look at the Cubs minor league system on Saturday, June 23.

 FULL BOX SCORE

Down 3-0 Boise got four runs in the fifth to take the lead, but surrendered it to lose 5-4 on Saturday night.  Ian Dickson got the start for the Hawks and gave up three runs on four hits in just 3.2 innings.  Roderik Pichardo got the loss in relief as he gave up two runs in 3.1 innings of work.  Joseph Zeller pitched two innings giving up only one hit.  Gioskar Amaya went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Marco Hernandez had a double and two RBI’s, and Chadd Krist had the other RBI for Boise.  Jeimer Candelario, Rock Shoulders, Eduardo Gonzalez, and Shawon Dunston Jr. all had one hit on the night.

Gerardo Concepcion took the loss as he could only get through 4.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits dropping his record to 2-5.  In the 4-2 Peoria loss Zeke DeVoss had two hits and a run scored.  Paul Hoilman had a nice night at the plate as well as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Dustin Geiger, Yasiel Balaguert, and Oliver Zapata all had contributed with a hit a piece on Saturday.  Sheldon McDonald pitched beautifully throwing 2.2 perfect innings in relief, he also struck out two.  Austin Reed gave up a run in relief, but also struck out three batters in his two innings of work.

Everything looked great for Daytona until they gave up seven runs in the bottom of the eighth as they took the Clearwater won the game 7-2.  Robert Whitenack was brilliant in five innings as he gave up no runs on only three hits while striking out three.  Brian Schlitter continued to impress as he pitched two perfect innings in relief striking out one batter.  As good as Whitenack and Schlitter were A.J. Morris and Jeffrey Lorick were not very good at all.  Morris was tagged with the loss as he gave up four runs while not recording an out and Lorick gave up three more in an inning of work.  The offense had nine hits including two from catcher Chad Noble who had a double and a run scored.  Everyone else in the Cubs starting lineup had one hit except John AndreoliGreg Rohan drove in his 61st run of the year and Matt Szczur scored a run and stole his 20th base of the season.

Tennessee scored six in the third, but had to hold on as they won 7-6 on Saturday.  Jeffry Antigua got the start, but did not factor in the decision as he only was able to pitch three innings.  Casey Weathers got the win pitching two good innings in relief giving up one hit and wallking one while striking out four.  Frank Batista recorded one out to pick up his 11th save of the season.  Logan Watkins had a nice night out of the leadoff spot going 2-for-4 with a double and triple.  He also walked once and scored two runs.  Jae-Hoon Ha had two hits and two RBI’s and Justin Bour added two hits of his own as he drove in a run as well.  Nelson Perez hit his first home run in Double-A and Michael Burgess also hit a homer, each driving in two runs.  Kevin Rhoderick struggled giving up three runs in 1.2 innings, he did however strike out three.

A three run fourth was too much for Chris Volstand and the Cubs to recover from.  Volstad gave up four runs, three of which were earned on six hits in six innings of work.  Brett Jackson led things for Iowa with his 10th home run of the season.  He added another hit later in the game bringing his average to .259.  Ty Wright had two doubles and Juan Apodaca had went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.  The hot hitting Josh Vitters only had one hit today and Anthony Rizzo is human as he went 0-for-4.  Rafael Dolis pitched two good innings in reflief giving up only hit and striking a batter out.

6/13: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A look at the minor league system on Wednesday June 13.

FULL BOX SCORE

Peoria scored early and often, scoring six runs in the first four innings.  That would prove to be plenty for starter Jose Rosario as the Chiefs won 7-1.  The offense pounded out 12 hits, including two-hit games by Zeke DeVoss, Dustin Geiger, Javier Baez, and Yasiel Balaguert.  Baez and Geiger each hit a homer and each added two RBI’s.  DeVoss, Balaguert, and Oliver Zapata also had RBI’s on the day.  Not to be overlooked was the great pitching performance by Rosario who gave up one run on three hits in 6.1 innings of work.  Hunter Cervenka through another scoreless inning while striking out two.  He has not allowed a hit in 10.1 innings or a base runner in 8.2, his ERA is now down to 0.63.

Daytona was trailing 3-1 in the the third when the game was suspended due to weather.  The game will pick up in the fourth inning tomorrow and will then play a seven inning game after the conclusion of the first game.

 Tennessee fell behind early, but came back to score six straight to win 6-3.  Dae-Eun Rhee gave up three early runs, but stayed around long enough to get his fourth win of the season.  Justin Bour had two hits including his 16th double and he also drove his 50th run of the season.  Junior Lake added two hits as well including a triple.  James Adduci hit his fifth homer of the season and also had two RBI’s on the day.  Jae-Hoon Ha, Wellington Castillo, and Michael Burgess all contributed with RBI’s as well.  Frank Batista closed the game out pitching two scoreless innings, and notching his ninth save of the season.

Not much excitement at Iowa today as the Cubs lost 5-2.  Not only did Iowa lose, but there was no Anthony Rizzo as he is day-to-day with a right knee contusion and there was no Brett Jackson in the lineup as well.  Rodrigo Lopez pitched six innings allowing three runs on eight hits.  Continuing his rehab Geovany Soto caught some today and also hit a double.  Luis Valbuena had two hits including a double and an RBI.  Blake Lalli had the only other RBI on the day.
