6/23: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A look at the Cubs minor league system on Saturday, June 23.

Down 3-0 Boise got four runs in the fifth to take the lead, but surrendered it to lose 5-4 on Saturday night. Ian Dickson got the start for the Hawks and gave up three runs on four hits in just 3.2 innings. Roderik Pichardo got the loss in relief as he gave up two runs in 3.1 innings of work. Joseph Zeller pitched two innings giving up only one hit. Gioskar Amaya went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Marco Hernandez had a double and two RBI’s, and Chadd Krist had the other RBI for Boise. Jeimer Candelario, Rock Shoulders, Eduardo Gonzalez, and Shawon Dunston Jr. all had one hit on the night.

Gerardo Concepcion took the loss as he could only get through 4.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits dropping his record to 2-5. In the 4-2 Peoria loss Zeke DeVoss had two hits and a run scored. Paul Hoilman had a nice night at the plate as well as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dustin Geiger, Yasiel Balaguert, and Oliver Zapata all had contributed with a hit a piece on Saturday. Sheldon McDonald pitched beautifully throwing 2.2 perfect innings in relief, he also struck out two. Austin Reed gave up a run in relief, but also struck out three batters in his two innings of work.

Everything looked great for Daytona until they gave up seven runs in the bottom of the eighth as they took the Clearwater won the game 7-2. Robert Whitenack was brilliant in five innings as he gave up no runs on only three hits while striking out three. Brian Schlitter continued to impress as he pitched two perfect innings in relief striking out one batter. As good as Whitenack and Schlitter were A.J. Morris and Jeffrey Lorick were not very good at all. Morris was tagged with the loss as he gave up four runs while not recording an out and Lorick gave up three more in an inning of work. The offense had nine hits including two from catcher Chad Noble who had a double and a run scored. Everyone else in the Cubs starting lineup had one hit except John Andreoli. Greg Rohan drove in his 61st run of the year and Matt Szczur scored a run and stole his 20th base of the season.

Tennessee scored six in the third, but had to hold on as they won 7-6 on Saturday. Jeffry Antigua got the start, but did not factor in the decision as he only was able to pitch three innings. Casey Weathers got the win pitching two good innings in relief giving up one hit and wallking one while striking out four. Frank Batista recorded one out to pick up his 11th save of the season. Logan Watkins had a nice night out of the leadoff spot going 2-for-4 with a double and triple. He also walked once and scored two runs. Jae-Hoon Ha had two hits and two RBI’s and Justin Bour added two hits of his own as he drove in a run as well. Nelson Perez hit his first home run in Double-A and Michael Burgess also hit a homer, each driving in two runs. Kevin Rhoderick struggled giving up three runs in 1.2 innings, he did however strike out three.

A three run fourth was too much for Chris Volstand and the Cubs to recover from. Volstad gave up four runs, three of which were earned on six hits in six innings of work. Brett Jackson led things for Iowa with his 10th home run of the season. He added another hit later in the game bringing his average to .259. Ty Wright had two doubles and Juan Apodaca had went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. The hot hitting Josh Vitters only had one hit today and Anthony Rizzo is human as he went 0-for-4. Rafael Dolis pitched two good innings in reflief giving up only hit and striking a batter out.

6/21: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Around the minor leagues on Thursday, June 21.

Boise won a thriller walking off in the bottom of the ninth. The game was tied 3-3 going to the ninth when Eugene score one, but Boise came back and scored two to win the game 5-4. With one out Gioskar Amaya tripled. Jeimer Candelario tied the game with a single to right field. After moving to third on a basehit by Wilson Contreras up stepped Rock Shoulders. Shoulders delivered a game winning single to left field and Boised got their second win of the season. The Hawks belted out 13 hits on Thursday. Amaya, Contreras, Xavier Batista all had two hits on the night. Candelario had the best night offensively as he went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI’s. The Hawks also got a great pitching performance from Hayden Simpson who pitched four innings and giving up one unearned run on only one hit. He also struck out seven in his first win at Boise this year.

Daytona got a great pitching performance from Austin Kirk as the Cubs won 3-0. Kirk pitched seven spectacular innings allowing zero runs and yielding only four hits. He also struck out three and walked two. Rebel Ridling had three hits including a double and a run scored. Ronald Torreyes had an outstanding day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. He also scored two runs and drove in one. Greg Rohan and Rubi Silva also drove in a run a piece. Ryan Searle and Jeffrey Lorick each pitched a scoreless inning as well as striking out two each.

Nicholas Struck pitched brilliantly on Thursday helping Tennessee win 3-1. Struck gave up one run on two hits in six innings. He also struck out seven batters as he improved his recored to 8-6. Ty’relle Harris and Marcus Hatley each pitched well in relief. Junior Lake was the offensive star on Thursday going 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored. His average now stands at .318. Justin Bour went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Logan Watkins and Matthew Cerda added two hits and scored a run each. Nelson Perez who was promoted had the other RBI on Thursday.

Not much good happened for Iowa today as they lost 6-2. Brett Jackson, Ty Wright, and Josh Vitters had the only hits for the Cubs. Vitters hit his 11th home run of the year. Frankie De La Cruz pitched only 4.2 innings giving up five runs, only two of which were earned on eight hits. Mike MacDougal gave up another run and three hits in his one inning of work. Jeff Beliveau pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Iowa’s record now stands at 31-43.

6/19: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A look at the minor leagues on June 19.

After getting their first win of the season Boise dropped the game on Tuesday 4-1. Offensively the Hawks had eight hits, but could only plate one run. Marco Hernandez, Wilson Contreras, and Dong-Yub Kim all had two hits. Contreras drove in the only Hawks run on the day. Gioskar Amaya and Brian Inoa also had hits on Tuesday. Wellington Cruz got the start and was pretty good in his five innings of work. He allowed one unearned run on only three hits and struck out six. Felix Pena got the loss as he allowed three runs only one of which was earned in three innings.

Matt Loosen has been good this year, but he took the loss on Tuesday dropping his record to 5-2. He pitched six innings allowing four runs, three earned on seven hits, while he striking out five. Joseph Zeller, Jeffrey Lorick, and Scott Weismann all pitched well in relief as they combined to pitch three innings of perfect baseball while striking out five. From an offensive standpoint Arismendy Alcantara went 3-for-4 with a double. Taylor Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rubi Silva drove in the other Cubs run on Tuesday as he also had a double. Alcantara also stole his 20th bag of the season.

Iowa had 13 hits, but could only score three runs as they lost to Round Rock 6-3. Alfredo Amezaga and Blake Lalli each had three hits and Lalli drove in a run. Dave Sappelt and Ty Wright had two hits a piece and Wright drove a run in. Josh Vitters hit his 10th home run of the season. Rodrigo Lopez took the loss Tuesday giving up six runs in five innings of work. Esmalin Caridad and Rafael Dolis each pitched well in relief.

6/12: Around The Minor League System

A look around the minor leagues on Tuesday.

Peoria took a tough loss on Tuesday losing 5-4. After Peoria took a 3-1 lead, Beloit came back in the fourth and scored four of there own. Michael Jensen took the lossfor the Chiefs, but was not helped out by his defense who committed five errors, three coming from Javier Baez and two coming from Dustin Geiger. Baez went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Zeke DeVoss had a double and also drove in a run. Pin-Chieh Chen, Yasiel Balaguert, and Yaniel Cabezas all added RBI’s on Tuesday. The loss dropped Peoria to 32-33 on the season.

Daytona got seven early runs, which proved to be plenty as they beat Brevard County 8-3. Nelson Perez led the attack with three hits including his eleventh homerun of the season. Greg Rohan and John Andreoli each had two hits on the night as well. Arismendy Alcantara and Richard Jones each added a hit and two RBI’s a piece. Eduardo Figueroa only could last three innings, but Ryan Searle came in relief to get his fourth win of the season. Joseph Zeller and Jeffrey Lorick also pitched two innings a piece on Tuesday. Daytona improved their record to 29-34.

A five run first for Omaha proved to be too much for Iowa to overcome. Chris Volstad gave up six runs in five innings of work, including four walks and six hits. Offensively Ty Wright had two hits including a double and a run scored. Blake Lalli, Alfredo Amezaga each had an RBI and Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer in the ninth. Geovany Soto was the DH in the game and delivered a double in four AB’s. The Cubs got quite a scare as Anthony Rizzo left early with a leg injury when he crashed into a fence in front of the dugout. Thankfully xrays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day with a right knee contusion.

5/31: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Minor League recap for May 31, 2012

Gerardo Concpecion pitched well on Thursday pitching six innings while only giving up two runs on four hits and striking out four. He departed with the game tied, however Austin Reed gave up a run the seventh and Peoria fell to Burlington 3-2. Offensive highlights from the Chiefs came from Yasiel Balaguert delivered a two out two RBI base hit to the tie the game at two in the sixth. Center fielder Yaniel Cabezas also added two hits on the day. Javier Baez continued to struggle as he went 0-for-4 dropping his average to .125

Tennessee had a great pitching performance by Eric Jokisch and company on Thursday as they defeated Huntsville 4-1. The Smokies got the scoring started in the third when Micahel Burgess connected on his fifth home run of the year. Huntsville tied the game in the fifth at one. The Smokies broke the tie in the seventh when James Adduci doubled and later scored on a wild pitch. Junior Lake would have an RBI double and later score on a sacrifice fly by Rebel Ridling in the eighth to give Tennessee a 4-1 lead. Jokisch, who did not factor in the decision pitched 6.1 innings allowing one run on only one hit, but he did walk six. Brian Schlitter got the last two outs of the seventh and got his first win of the year. Keven Rhoderick pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Frank Batista struck out the side to record his seventh save of the year.

Nothing is more exciting than a walk-off win, and that is exactly what Ronald Torreyes did connecting on his first home run of the season and giving Daytona a 7-6 victory. Including Torreyes, Chad Noble, Rubi Silva, Greg Rohan, and Arismendy Alcantara all had two hits on the day. Brevard County got the scoring started in the first scoring three runs. Daytona would put up six spot in the third highlighted by a Nelson Perez grandslam. For Perez it was his eight home run and he now has 34 RBI’s. Austin Kirk was not at his best on Thursday, but after allowing two more runs in the fifth left in line for the win, however Brevard County tied the game in the eighth. Jeffrey Lorick pitched a scoreless ninth and when Torreyes connected on his shot in the bottom half he received his first win of the season.

GAME 1 (7 innings)

In Game 1 of the split double-header on Thursday Iowas won 4-1. Iowas got the scoring in the third when Brett Jackson delivered a two out RBI single to drive in Juan Apodaca who had two hits on the day. After Omaha tied it in the third Brett Jackson would drive in his second of the night with a sacrifice fly to drive in Dave Sappelt. The Cubs would add two in the seventh with two outs when Luis Valbuena and Ty Wright both walked to drive in runs three and four. Frankie De La Cruz got the start and 4.1 allowing one run on four hits while striking out four. Ryan Rowland-Smith got the win going 1.1 innings and Rafael Dolis got the save. Good news for Cub fans he struck out two and did not walk anybody.

GAME 2 (7 innings)

Omaha jumped on Jay Jackson and the Cubs early and Iowa was never able to rebound. The lone offensive highlight came from Brett Jackson who hit his sixth home run of the season in the sixth. Ty Wright was the only other Cub to record a hit in game two. The same could not be said for Omaha who had eleven hits and ten runs in seven innings. Jay Jackson gave up the firs six runs and Shane Lindsay had a very rough outing walking four of the five batters he faced. All four runs in the sixth were charged to him and the Cubs lost 10-1 in game 2.
