Minor Matters – April 16, 2013 (Cubs Minor League Recaps)
At The Plate – You wouldn’t know it by the hit totals, but the I-Cubs won this one rather handily 4-3. Iowa only had three hits, and gave up ten, but that’s not what decides games. Ty Wright was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Ryan Sweeney had one of the other hits and it was a big one, he was 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple, and an RBI. J.C. Boscan had the biggest hit of the day as he was 1-for-3 with a double, and two RBI’s, definitely an odd game at the plate, but drawing four walks definitely helped.
On The Mound – Plenty of hits given up by the Cubs staff, but they didn’t walk anyone, and that was a huge reason they pulled this one out. Brooks Raley had a tremendous outing getting his first win of the season going six scoreless innings giving up six hits, and striking out seven. Yoanner Negrin continues to be untouchable out of the pen, he worked two scoreless innings only giving up two hits. Cory Wade worked the ninth and gave up one run on two hits while striking out two.
At The Plate – A back and forth game in Huntsville ended with the Smokies hanging on to win 4-3 over the Stars. Matt Szczur continues to be productive out of the lead-off spot, he went 2-for-3 with a home run, a stolen base, a caught stealing, an RBI, and a run scored. Justin Bour also joined in on the fun going 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Rubi Silva has been scorching hot all year and it was no different last night, he was 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored, he’s hitting .405 on the season now.
On The Mound – Alberto Cabrera got the start and his second win of the season as he went six innings giving up two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. A.J. Morris was solid out of the pen going two scoreless, and hitless innings while striking out three. Frank Batista worked the ninth for his second save, although he made it exciting, he worked one inning giving up one run on one hit while walking one.
At The Plate – All sorts of offense from Daytona but it wasn’t nearly enough in this one. Seven out of the nine players in the lineup had at least one hit. John Andreoli was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, two stolen bases, and one run scored. Javy Baez connected on his second homer of the season, he finished the day 1-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Stephen Bruno was 2-for-2 with two walks with a double, and a run scored. Dustin Geiger continues to stay hot going 2-for-3 with an RBI, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .310 on the season.
On The Mound – I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen anything like this in just nine innings. The D-Cubs staff gave up fifteen runs, that was low in my opinion seeing that they gave up twenty-seven hits, twenty-seven! Ryan Searle has been great this year, not last night, he went 4.2 innings giving up seven runs on fifteen(!) hits while striking out five, his ERA sits at 4.85 right now, a small miracle given how many runs he gave up. Hunter Cervenka and Luis Liria gave up a combined seven runs in 2.1 innings. Taylor Davis, a catcher, worked one inning giving up one run on four hits.
At The Plate - The Cougars had a thrilling comeback win in game one as they scored twice in the last two innings to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3. Gioskar Amaya was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Daniel Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and a run scored, with that two hit game his average climbed to .302 on the season. Jeimer Candelario was 1-for-3 with a big two run double to help the Cougars come all the way back.
On The Mound – Errors got the best of the Cougars early on and it showed in the pitching staff”s numbers. Jose Arias got the start and went four innings giving up three runs, all unearned, on four hits while walking three and striking out three. Jeffry Antigua was great out of the pen and was rewarded with his first win of the season. Antigue went three scoreless innings giving up two hits while walking one and striking out three.
At The Plate – No such comeback luck in this one from the Cougars as they were done in by a seven run second inning. Marco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, an error, and two runs scored. Wes Darvill was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Bijan Rademacher was 2-for-2 with a walk. The top three guys in the Cougars order went 0-for-10 in game two, and the Cougars went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
On The Mound – Michael Heesch got the start and didn’t get much help from his defense. Heesch went 1.2 innings giving up six runs, two earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out two. Brian Smith got beat up a little bit as he went 2.1 innins giving up two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two. Steve Perakslis and Nathan Dorris each tossed a scoreless inning in the loss.

Minor Matters – April 6, 2013
At The Plate – The Iowa Cubs scattered nine hits in the loss, and were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in suffering their third straight loss. Newly acquired Ryan Sweeney got things going right away as he was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a walk, and a run scored. Brad Nelson was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
On The Mound – Brooks Raley got the start and was rough up in four innings of work. He gave up four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three, he was tagged with the loss. Yoanner Negrin was solid out of the pen going two scoreless innings giving up no hits while walking one and striking out three. Zach Putnam and Rafael Dolis were both touched up as they gave up a combined four runs over the last two innings.
At The Plate - You wouldn’t know it by the score, this was a pitchers duel up until the top of the 12th when the Smokies scored 8 times to win this one. Matt Szczur was terrific from the lead-off spot again going 2-for-7 with three RBI’s, and a run scored. Jae-Hoon Ha continued his hot start going 3-for-5 with two RBI’s, a stolen base, and a run scored.
On The Mound – The Smokies had to use five pitchers to get through this one and all were effective as they totaled 15 strikeouts in twelve innings. Eric Jokisch got the start and was solid going six innings giving up one run on three hits while walking two and striking out seven. Kevin Rhoderick, Marcus Hatley, Frank Batista, and Brian Schlitter all had scoreless appearances with Batista getting the win.
At The Plate – It was the Jorge Soler show in this one as he went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Timothy Saunders also had a solid night going 3-for-4. Stephen Bruno was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Javier Baez had a rough night going 0-for-4 with an error.
On The Mound - The trio of Austin Kirk, Yao-Lin Wang, and Frank Del Valle shut down the Manatees. Kirk got the start and went three innings giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out two. Yao-Lin Wang was awesome going three innings only giving up a single, while walking one and striking out four. Frank Del Valle was even better going three innings only allowing one hit while walking one and striking out six to earn the save.
At The Plate – Fireworks everywhere as the Cougars trailed 7-0 and 8-1 before tying it at ten in the ninth before falling 13-10 in eleven innings. The Cougars pounded out 19 hits with seven guys having multi-hit nights. Daniel Vogelbach was 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Rock Shoulders had a huge game going 4-for-6 with two RBI’s and a run scored. Oliver Zapata was outstanding going 3-for-6 with a triple, a home run, five RBI’s, and a run scored.
On The Mound – Obviously not much good here. Cougars pitchers gave up 17 hits in the loss. Jose Arias got the start and got the brunt of the River Bandits attack. Arias only went 1.2 innings giving up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits while walking none and struck out two. Nathan Dorris was the most effective Cougar going 2.1 innings giving up one run on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Ian Dickson was solid but had no command, he went five innings giving up two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out four.

Hawks Make Four Errors, Drop Game One
Boise dropped a tough one in the first game of the series losing to the Yakima Bears 5-4. Yakima got the scoring started in the first scoring an unearned run off of Hawks starter Pierce Johnson. Johnson pitched three strong innings allowing one unearned run on two hits, while walking one and striking out three. He left the game in line for the loss, but Boise rallied in the bottom of the fourth. Marco Hernadez who had a nice night offensively (2-for-4) led the inning off with a triple, but was followed by a Stephen Bruno strikeout. The next two hitters for the Hawks were Dan Vogelbach and Jeimer Candelario, who both walked to load the bases for Albert Almora who was ultra aggressive and struck out swinging. Up stepped Rock Shoulders who worked a full count and then unloaded on the 3-2 breaking ball hitting a grand slam and giving Boise a 4-1 lead after four. Jose Arias, who relieved Johnson was still on the hill in the sixth when Yakima tied things up. A lead off single was followed by a run scoring double for the Bears. After recording two outs Arias struggled with his command walking the next two, hitting a batter to force in a run, and throwing a passed ball, which appeared to be a cross up, and just like that the game was knotted at four. The final line for Arias was three innings pitched giving up three runs, two earned on four hits. Yakima would continue getting the leadoff hitter on and it wound up costing the Hawks in the ninth. With Nathan Dorris pitching, Daniel Poma led off with a very controversial infield single. After a sac bunt, Kevin Medrano doubled to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run. Boise threatened in the bottom half as Albert Almora started things off with an infield hit. Rock Shoulders struck out swinging, but Almora stole second. Almora took third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there when Wilson Contreras and Darien Martin each struck out swinging to end the game. Nathan Dorris took the loss giving up one run on two hits in his three innings of work.
Boise will have to be a lot better from here on out as offensively they only had five hits and struck out 15 times and defensively they committed four errors. With those numbers it is hard to believe the Hawks even had a chance to win the game, let alone be in control of the game as they were into the sixth. Boise will now travel to Yakima tomorrow and will have to win in order to keep the season alive.

8/28: Around the Cubs Minor League System
The Cubs minor league recap for Tuesday, August 28. Daytona was again cancelled because of rain.
The AZL Cubs tried to come back, but ended up losing to the Diamondbacks 6-4. Dillon Maples started and got the loss allowing two unearned runs in one inning. The Cubs used six more pitchers to get through the rest of the game. Some of the good pitching performances were Loiger Padron who struck out three and allowed one hit in two innings. Anthony York struggled giving up three runs in just 0.2 innings. Daniel Adrian, Jin-Young Kim, and Arturo Maltos-Garcia all combined to strike out eight in just three innings. Garrett Schlecht was really good night going 4-for-4 with a double, triple, and three runs scored. Yasiel Balaguert was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Trevor Gretzky and Carlos Penalver each had a hit and an RBI. Justin Marra had a double and Jeff Baez knocked in one run in the loss.

Boise jumped on Everett early scoring seven runs in the first two innings and ended up winning 7-3. Stephen Bruno has been outstanding and Tuesday was no different going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Jeimer Candelario and Gioskar Amaya each hit a home run with Candelario driving in two and Amaya three. Wilson Contreras and Marco Hernandez had two hits a piece with Contreras having two RBIs. Carlos Escobar and Darien Martin each had a hit in the win. Although he didn’t have a hit it was nice to see Albert Almora get back in the lineup. Pierce Johnson got the start pitching two innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits while striking out three. Jose Arias pitched the next three innings allowing one run on one hit, while walking four and striking out three. Brian Smith pitched the next 2.2 innings and got the win not allowing a run and striking out three. Rafael Diplan notched his first save of the season, striking out two of the four outs he recorded.

Peoria gave up three runs in the ninth and lost to Wisconsin 4-1. In some really good new Ben Wells got the start in his first game with Peoria since coming back from injury. He pitched two innings allowing no runs on two hits, with one walk. Willengton Cruz did a very nice job in relief pitching five innings allowing one run on three hits, while striking out four. Justin Berg took the loss giving up three runs in the ninth inning. The Chiefs only had four hits on Tuesday. Pin-Chieh Chen and Dustin Geiger each had hits as did Timothy Saunders and Jacob Rogers. Jorge Soler did not have a hit, but walked twice and scored the Chiefs lone run.

Tennessee gave up one run in the ninth to tie the game, but walked-off in the 10th beating Mobile 6-5. Logan Watkins was the hero hitting the walk off home run in the 10th, he ended the night 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Michael Brenly had quite a nice night as well going 3-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Matt Cerda was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Michael Burgess had a pinch hit RBI single. Junior Lake and Rubi Silva each had a hit in the Smokies win. Austin Kirk got the start going seven strong innings. He gave up three runs, two earned on seven hits, while walking one and striking out one. Kevin Rhoderick gave up a run in one inning, but got the ball to Frank Batista with the lead. Batista blew the save, but got the win. Tennessee is playing good ball lately and they are now 33-32, but it appears to be too late as they are five out and are one game away from being eliminated.

Iowa lost to Nashville 7-3. Horacio Ramirez wasn’t good giving up seven runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Miguel Socolovich, Rafael Dolis, and Jairo Asencio combined to pitch 3.1 innings not allowing a run. Alfredo Amezaga was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Tony Campana and Matt Tolbert each had two hits, with Tolbert scoring a run. Greg Rohan, Dave Sappelt, and James Adduci each had a hit in the Cubs loss.

8/18: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Saturday’s trip through the minors. The AZL Cubs and Daytona were both postponed on Saturday, August 18.
It was a nice night all around for Boise as they beat Tri-City 8-2. Boise’s pitchers only gave up two hits and one earned in the win. Jose Arias got the start and was brilliant pitching five strong innings not giving up a run and allowing only one hit. He also struck out five and walked one in getting the win. Hayden Simpson had been struggling, but pitched better tonight giving up two runs, one earned on one hit in four innings. He also struck out five on the night and got the save. Not only did the pitchers do their job, but the offense did as well. Stephen Bruno was great once again ending the night 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. He is now hitting .332 with Boise this year. Rock Shoulders had only one hit, but it was a big one, a grand slam in the third inning. Marco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a run and Gioskar Amaya had one hit, two walks, and scored three runs. Dan Vogelbach only had one hit in this one, but did have an RBI. Albert Almora was 0-for-5 in this one, hitting into some tough luck. Boise continues to roll and this team is getting more fun by the day.

Peoria got back on track Saturday beating Wisconsin 9-2. The offense pounded out 14 hits to go along with those nine runs to back Michael Jensen. Jensen pitched well going five innings allowing two runs, one earned one three hits, while striking out seven. Pete Levitt pitched well in relief pitching three shutout innings before giving the ball to Sheldon McDonald who recorded the last three outs of the game. Jorge Soler was outstanding in this one going 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs. Timothy Saunders and Jacob Rogers also had good games as each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Yaniel Cabezas had a nice game of his own going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Zeke DeVoss didn’t have a hit, but he walked four times, scored a run, drove one in, and stole his 35th base of the season. It was good to see the Chiefs come back after a rough stretch.

Tennessee won 2-1 in a rain shortened game. Austin Kirk pitched a five inning complete game giving up one run on three hits. In his first start with Tennessee he got his first win. The offense did just enough for the win in this one led by Junior Lake. Lake was 2-for-3 at the dish with two doubles and a run scored. Michael Burgess and Justin Bour each had a hit and drove in a run a piece. Matt Szczur also contributed to the victory with a double and a run scored. A win is a win anyway you can get it, even if it only lasts five innings.

Iowa made it two in a row beating Memphis 3-2 on Saturday. Ryan Rowland-Smith got the start and the win giving up one run on five hits in five innings. Blake Parker continued his rehab assignment pitching 1.2 innings and allowing one run. After a scoreless 1.1 innings Marcus Hatley turned things over to Jairo Asencio who notched his third save of the year. After a big day yesterday, Dave Sappelt did it again as went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Alfredo Amezaga, Jeff Frazier, and Brian Esposito all had two hits a piece. Tony Campana also had a hit and scored a run in the Cubs win.

8/13: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Here is a look at the Cubs minor league affiliates on Monday, August 13. Daytona and Tennessee each had the night off.
The AZL Cubs just exploded pounding out 25 hits and scoring 17 runs beating Reds 17-7. I don’t even know where to start with this one, except make sure to look at the full box score because I won’t be able to mention all the awesome things that happened in this one. Albert Almora led the way going 5-for-6 with a triple, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Garrett Schlect had two doubles and drove in three and Daniel Lockhart hit his first home run and drove in three as well. Carlos Penalver was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and Yasiel Balaguert was the only Cub to not have a multi-hit game, but he did knock in three of his own. Trevor Gretzky, Shawon Dunston, and Justin Marra all had three hits a piece, with Dunston adding two RBIs and Marra driving in one. David Bote also had two hits. There I think I got through all of the offensive numbers. Paul Blackburn started, but did not have his best outing allowing four runs, three earned in two innings. On a positive Dillon Maples was spectacular pitching three scoreless innings allowing only two hits while striking out five. Chad Martin and Ryan Hartman also pitched in this landslide victory.

A nine run eighth was way too much for Boise to overcome losing 11-4 on Monday night. Jose Arias pitched six innings allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out four. He left in line for the win and after Willengton Cruz pitched a scoreless seventh things were looking good. Good turned to really bad when Hayden Simpson came on in relief. He had a terrible outing giving up eight run, six earned on six hits all the while only recording one out. He obviously took the loss as there was no way the Hawks were going to come back from that. Offensively speaking there were some good things to come out of the Monday nights loss. Jeimer Candelario was 3-for-4, raising his average to .294. Marco Hernandez had two hits of his own, including a triple and an RBI. Stephen Bruno and Wilson Contreras had a hit and an RBI a piece while Gioskar Amaya added two hits from the leadoff spot.

Peoria tied the game at two in the top of eighth, but gave one up in the bottom half and lost 3-2 to Beloit. Yao-Lin Wang started and pitched pretty good going six innings allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out four. Austin Reed took the loss allowing one unearned run in his two innings of work. Jorge Soler went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Oliver Zapata added a double and an RBI on the evening. Zeke DeVoss, Chadd Krist, and Bijan Rademacher all had one hit a piece in the Chiefs loss on Monday.

Iowa’s pitchers struggled big time in this one as the Cubs lost 14-7. Ryan Rowland-Smith started and took the loss giving up five runs in four inning. Jaye Chapman, Seth McClung and Brian Esposito all pitched and gave up multiple runs each. Jay Jackson was the only Cubs pitcher to come out unscathed recording two outs. Offensively speaking Tony Campana had a nice night going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Greg Rohan and Dave Sappelt each had a hit and two RBIs in the loss to Las Vegas on Monday night.

8/8: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Sorry this is getting up later than normal, but here is Wednesday’s minor league recap.
The AZL Cubs pick up where they left off beating the Dodgers 5-2. Paul Blackburn started and pitched two innings giving up two unearned runs on four hits, while striking out two. Chad Martin got his first win of the season pitching two scoreless innings. Dillon Maples then went to the mound and struck out three in his two innings of scoreless baseball. Corbin Hoffner then pitched two scoreless followed by Ryan Hartman notching his second save of the season. Offensively Davie Bote had a really nice game going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Treveor Gretzky was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Shawon Dunston also added two hit, including a triple and he drove in a run. Albert Almora had a hit and an RBI, his seventh of the season.

Another night and another win for Boise beating Everett 8-6. Dan Vogelbach hit another home run, this one a two-run shot. Rock Shoulders also hit a home run, his was a grand slam. Jeimer Candelario had a hit and an RBI of his own. Wilson Contreras was the only Hawks player to have a multi-hit game ending the night 2-for-4. Gioskar Amaya only had one hit, but did score three runs. Jose Arias pitched good enough to get the win, but did allow three runs on four hits while striking out six. Hayden Simpson pitched three innings allowing three runs, but struck out four and Eduardo Orozco preserved the lead notching his third save pitching a scoreless ninth.

Peoria gave up four in the eighth and one in the ninth to put the game into extra innings. It took until the 14th when the Chiefs put up two, Burlington came right back and scored three and won the game 9-8. Timothy Saunders went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs, and two stolen bases. Paul Hoilman also had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs. Dustin Geiger added two hits and three RBIs and Zeke DeVoss went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Yao-Lin Wang got the start and pitched outstanding going six strong innings. he allowed only one run on three hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter. Luis Liria and Austin Reed both struggled combining to allow five runs in three innings. Sheldon McDonald pitched three nice innings, but Pete Levitt took the loss allowing all three runs in the 14th. It really should have never gotten to extra innings, but then to take a lead there and still lose is a tough pill to swallow.

Huntsville scored three in the first and three more in the third and never looked back beating Tennessee 7-2. Junior Lake was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, he is now hitting .288. Matt Szczur went 1-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. In really good new Jae-Hoon Ha was back on the field for the first time since his scary collision with an unpadded wall that led to a concussion. He ended the night 1-for-4. Dallas Beeler started and took the loss giving up six runs, five earned in the just three innings pitched. Casey Harman pitched three nice innings allowing only one run on three hits and striking out two. Casey Weathers, Tony Zych, and Frank Batista combined to pitch the last three scoreless innings. It was really nice to see Ha back on the field, hope he can stay there the rest of the way.

The game was tied at one going to the extra innings, but Reno scored four in the 10th and beat Iowa 5-1. Ryan Rowland-Smith got the start and pitched beautifully allowing one run on only two hits in six innings of work. Blake Parker continues hit rehab pitching one scoreless inning. Jay Jackson pitched two good innings, but struggled in the 10th allowing four runs in taking the loss. Greg Rohan did not have a hit, but drove in the lone Cubs run. Dave Sappelt was 1-for-4 with a double and Matt Tolbert was the only Cubs player with a multi-hit game going 2-for-2 with a double of his own.

8/3: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Minor league recap for August 3, 2012.
The AZL Cubs continued their tear beating the AZL D-Backs for their fifth straight victory. It wasn’t as easy as it should have been however as the D-Backs scored five times in the ninth, but the Cubs hang on to win 7-5. Dillon Maples made his second start on his road to recovery and turned in some solid work going 1.2 innings only allowing one hit while walking two and striking out one. Paul Blackburn, one of two 2012 supplemental draft picks continued his strong season. Blackburn worked 3.1 innings allowing only one hit while walking one and striking out two to earn his second victory of the season and lower his ERA to 1.86. 2012 draft picks Corbin Hoffner and Jasvir Rakkar also worked scoreless innings. It was another night of fireworks from the AZL Cubs offense. Albert Almora, who is on fire right now, went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Shawon Dunston, and Ben Carhart each had two hits on the night with Carhart recording his 8th double of the season. Jacob Rogers had a big night at the plate as well going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a walk, and three runs scored.

The Boise Hawks raced out to a 4-0 lead, and held a 5-2 lead by the 5th inning but couldn’t hang on as Spokane plated three runs in the 8th on their way to a 6-5 win. Jose Arias didn’t get very deep into this one for the Hawks as he tossed 2.2 innings giving up two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out three. Arias left with the lead, but Hayden Simpson couldn’t hang onto it. Simpson worked 4.1 innings giving up three runs on six hits while striking out six. Eduardo Orozco only gave up only one run in his inning of work, but that was the deciding run as Orozco was hung with his first loss of the season. Gioskar Amaya had another solid night at the plate, what else is new? Amaya was 2-for-4 with his ninth triple of the season, an RBI, a walk, and a run scored, he is now hitting .315. Daniel Vogelbach continued to be a doubles machine as he was 1-for-3 at the plate with his 5th double while with Boise. Rock Shoulders had a productive night as well going 1-for-4 with his 6th home run of the season, a two run shot.

The Chiefs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead against Quad Cities but couldn’t hang as they fell 4-2. Yao-Lin Wang continued his transition to the starting rotation as he went 5.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out six. Wang left with the game tied at two, and unfortunately Jeffry Antigua could keep the River Bandits off the board. Antigua went 1.2 innings giving up two runs on three hits while striking out two earning his first loss of the season. Javier Baez continued his assault on Single-A pitching in the loss as he was 2-for-4 with his 12th home run of the season, he also stole his 20th base. Baez is now hitting .336 on the season, and there are whispers that he is close to earning a promotion. Zeke DeVoss had a solid night at the top of the Chiefs order going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

The D-Cubs fell behind early, and couldn’t dig out of that hole as they dropped this one to Dunedin 6-2. Kyler Burke started for the D-Cubs, and was responsible for that hole I was talking about. Burke gave up three runs in the first and then settled down after that. He went five innings giving up three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four. Hunter Cervenka had a rare awful outing as he struggled with his command in two innings of work, walking four and giving up three runs, two earned. Rubi Silva continued his strong 2012 season at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, he is now hitting .302 on the campaign. Christian Villanueva followed up his stellar Cubs debut by going 1-for-4 with a double and a spectacular catch in the field that I’m hoping to get video of shortly.

Smokies postponed, again.
Things seem to go from bad to worse for Iowa each night. Tonight was no different as the I-Cubs battled Colorado Springs all game before surrendering three runs in the top of the ninth to lose 4-1. Ryan Rowland-Smith got the start tonight and was outstanding as he went six strong innings giving up one run on two hits while walking three and striking out six. Jaye Chapman, who was acquired from the Braves a couple of days ago took the loss as he was knocked around in the ninth. Chapman worked one inning giving up three runs on three hits while walking one, he fell to 0-1 on the season. The I-Cubs were dreadful with runners in scoring position, and they had plenty of chances too, when it was all said and done they were 0-for-10 in the loss. Josh Vitters had a big night once again for Iowa, he went 3-for-4 with his 32nd double of the season. Vitters is now hitting .304 on the season as he continues to try to force the Cubs hand and give them no choice but to award him the promotion he deserves. 7/26: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Taking you through the Cubs minor leagues on Thursday, July 26.
The AZL Cubs lost a rough one on Thursday to the Ranger 5-4. Leading most of the night, the Cubs gave up two in the eight, one in the ninth, and one in the tenth to blow what appeared to be a win. Those relievers who struggled were Ryan Hartman, Nathan Dorris, and losing pitcher Daniel Adrian. It wasn’t all bad on the mound as Carl Lang and Ethan Elias each pitched three solid innings combing to strike out seven and surrender only one run on four hits. Every night we look forward to seeing how Albert Almora and Jorge Soler and tonight was no different. Almora started strong with hit first double, but ended the night 1-for-5. Soler ended the night 1-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base. Garrett Schlecht had a night he won’t forget as he hit his first home run of his professional career, a two-run shot in the fourth. Shawon Dunston Jr. stayed hot adding two more hits, raising his average to .296. Carlos Penalver also had two hits and Jacob Rogers added a double. The AZL Cubs havn’t had too many disappointments, but tonight was one of them.

Boise lost a low scoring game to Yakima 1-0. Although there was only one run scored there was plenty of excitement in this one as there were ejections and the benches almost cleared. It all started a few nights ago when Wilson Contreras was bowled over twice and then was hit by a pitch in this game. Starting pitcher Jose Arias took exception and retaliated hitting a Bears player in the seventh. Arias and manager Mark Johnson were promtly ejected. Things didn’t end there though. Contreras found his way on and bowled over the Yakima catcher and on his way back to the dugout had words for the Bears dugout. Benches almost cleared and Contreras was ejected from the game. Back to the baseball part of it. Jose Arias pitched quite well taking the tough loss on Thursday. He gave up one run on three hits in six innings, he also walked two and struck out three. Michael Hamann and Eduardo Orozco combined to pitch three innings of scoreless baseball in relief. Offensively there wasn’t much to talk about. The highlights were Marco Hernandez having two hits and Daniel Vogelbach getting another hit.

Peoria scored early and it held up as they beat Cedar Rapids 7-2. The Chiefs got two in the first, one in the third, and three more in the fourth to get an early lead. Javier Baez had a nice night once again going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Zeke DeVoss and Yaniel Cabezas also had twho hits with DeVoss driving a run and scoring two. Chadd Krist continued his great performance at the plate adding another hit, his sixth double and driving in two runs. On the mound Michael Jensen was at it again winning his ninth game of the year. He pitched six solid innings, surrendering two runs on four hits, while striking out six and walking zero. Larry Suarez and Bryce Shafer finished this one off pitched three scoreless innings to end the game.

Daytona outlasted Bradenton beating them 9-7 in a high scoring battle. The Cubs offense had a few big innings, scoring three in the second, the fourth, and two in the seventh. Offensively they were led by Rafael Lopez who was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Lopez was not the only Cubs player to have a big night as John Andreioli was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, four runs scored, and his 36th steal of the year. Matt Szczur added two hits and he also drove in a pair, raising his average to .295. Rubi Silva and Elieser Bonne each had two hits as well and Bonne drove in two on the evening. Austin Kirk started and got the win, his fifth of the year. He allowed four runs on six hits in six innings, walking five and striking out three. Ryan Searle pitched the last three holding on the record his first save of the season.

Despite scoring four Tennessee dropped the game to Jacksonville losing 6-4. Dallas Beeler started, but did not factor in the decision allowing four runs, three earned and striking out eight in five innings pitched. Tony Zych took the loss as he allowed two runs in his two innings of work. On the bright side, there were some nice things that happened at the plate. Junior Lake stayed hot going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Justin Bour and Greg Rohan each connected for a home run on Thursday. Nate Samson added three hits of his own. In an unfortunate accident Jae-Hoon Ha had to leave the game early on a stretcher after he hit his head on a cement wall wall that had no padding. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jae-Hoon and hope to have good news on this soon. We will keep you updated as we know more.

How many different ways can Iowa find to lose, because it seems like they find a new one every night. After having a lead most of the night they gave up a single run in the fifth and six to tie the game. After scoring two in the tenth, they gave up three to lose 6-5. Michael Bowden to the loss allowing all three runs in the tenth. Casey Coleman was solid pitching 5.2 innings giving up three runs on seven hits. Jay Jackson pitched well in relief allowing no runs in his two innings of work. The Cubs were led by James Adduci at the plate having his best game in Iowa. He went 4-for-5 with a home run, double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Josh Vitters was the other bright spot from the offense going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and a run batted in. Nothing is going right for Iowa at this time, hope they can turn it around and end the year on a high note, but only time will tell.

Cubs minor league recap for July 21, 2012
The AZL Cubs were postponed.
Boise jumped out on top of Eugene early scoring twice in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately that didn’t last for the Hawks as the Emeralds scored twice in the second and third to take a 4-2 lead. Eugene broke it open in the fifth inning scoring three times to make it 7-2 and put this one away. Boise tried to put together a rally in the 8th but they could only manage to plate two runs to make it 7-4 and that’s how it would end. Jose Arias got the start for Boise and struggled, he went 2.1 innings giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits while walking three and striking out two. The loss was the first of the season for Arias who fell to 2-1. Boise had their chances to say the least, they pounded out ten hits but could only score four times. They were 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base, that usually ends up in a loss. Gioskar Amaya, Stephen Bruno, Willson Contreras, and Xavier Batista all had two hits in the loss, Amaya collected his 8th triple of the season.

It was an eventful first three innings Saturday Night as Peoria and South Bend combined for 10 runs. Unfortunately, Peoria came out of the first three innings trailing 6-4 on their way to losing to South Bend 6-5. Zach Cates got the start for the Chiefs and didn’t have his best stuff as he lost his third game of the season. Cates worked three innings giving up six runs, four earned on eight hits while walking none and striking out three. It was the Javier Baez show at the plate once again as the young star was 3-for-4 with his 10th home run of the season, his 5th triple of the season and two RBI’s, he added his 19th stolen base for good measure. Pin-Chieh Chen and Bijan Rademacher each had two hits for Peoria in the loss, Chen had a triple and Rademacher had a double.

Kyler Burke was the hard luck loser for Daytona on Saturday night as he pitched well enough to win but couldn’t get any help from his offense. Burke went six strong innings giving up three runs, one earned on six hits while walking none and striking out two. With Daytona leading 2-1 in the six Jupiter pushed across two runs to take a 3-2 lead. Daytona couldn’t get any closer and Jupiter tacked on an insurance run in the 8th to take this one 4-2. Matt Szczur had a great night at the plate as he pushed his average to .290 on the season. He was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Rubi Silva went 2-for-3 with an RBI, he is now hitting .309 on the season.

Things started off well enough as the I-Cubs scored twice in the top of the 1st inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Isotopes. That lead didn’t stand for long as Albuquerque scored eight runs in the bottom of the first and the rout was on. The Isotopes added one in the second, five more in the 5th and single runs in the 7th and 8th to win this one going away 16-3. Casey Coleman was awful, no other way to describe it. Coleman’s night mercifully came to an end after 2.2 innings, he gave up nine runs all earned on ten hits while walking four and striking out three. Alberto Cabrera came in to stop the bleeding, but he reopened the wound in the 5th. Cabrera tossed two innings in relief giving up five runs, two earned on six hits while walking one and striking out five. On the bright side, Josh Vitters had a solid night at the plate going 2-for-4 with his 14th home run of the season and three RBI’s. Adrian Cardenas and Dave Sappelt each chipped in with a double but it obviously wasn’t enough.
