Cubs Announce Arizona Fall League Roster

I wish the Arizona Fall League was closer to Chicago, obviously there are reason’s why it’s not, I’m not a complete moron.  I wish it was closer so I could see games because the rosters are made up of some of the best prospects from all over baseball.  There are six teams competing in the league, here is the breakdown of Major League team participation.

Cubs players will be grouped with players from the Orioles, Astros, Tigers, and Dodgers to form the Mesa Solar Sox.  Click here for the full roster, the Cubs will be sending Javier Baez, Matt Szczur, Rubi Silva, Dae-Eun Rhee, Nick Struck, Tony Zych, Kevin Rhoderick, and Zach Rosscup.  The purpose of this league is to get a look at guys, could be guys that didn’t play too much during the season or guys that are ready to jump a level, possibly to the major league level, or are on the bubble for a 40 man roster spot.  If they are not added to the 40-man roster they will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft and could be lost to another team.  The three players vying for a spot on the 40-man roster are Rhee, Rosscup, and Struck, all others are already on the 40-man roster.  So this league is clearly important, it could be make or break for some guys, or it could be an important building block for others.

One glaring omission is Jorge Soler as he didn’t get too much time to play here in the States this year.  My guess is that he will be playing somewhere this offseason, most likely a winter league as the organization would like to see him get more 2012 at bats.

Bombshell – Melky Cabrera Suspended 50 Games

Consider this horrible news for the San Francisco Giants and Major League Baseball.  Today Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games after testing positive for testosterone.  Cabrera is having a tremendous season as he is second in the national league in hitting (.346).  This season just went from feel good to nightmarish for the Giants and Cabrera as they only have 45 games remaining.  I don’t think Giants fans are going to be very forgiving.

Deadline Day Around the League

The Cubs aren’t the only one who are going to be dealing today.  Here are some of the latest happenings around the league.  There will be plenty of updates as the day continues.

  • It looks like Shane Victorino will be traded to the Dodgers.  It sounds like Josh Lindblom would be going to the Phillies.  Nothing official yet, but this means the Dodgers will not be going after Alfonso Soriano.
  • UPDATE:  It is officail The Philies have traded OF Shane Victorino to the Dodgers for relief pitcher Josh Lindblom and SP Ethan Martin.
  • The D-Backs appear to be in the market for a big time starting pitcher.  No names yet, but maybe they would be interested in Matt Garza?
  • Although the Phillies have traded away Shane Victorino there are still reports they are talking to the Giants about Hunter Pence.
  • UPDATE:  Hunter Pence on his way to San Francisco for C/1B prospect Tommy Joseph.  Nate Schierholtz is going to the Phillies as well, as does Seth Rosin.
  • Padres are asking for a lot for Chase Headley, but a deal could still get done.
  • Rangers looking to bolster bullpen.  Possibly put Ogando back in the rotation and acquire another bullpen arm, possibly Broxton from KC.
  • The Cardinals have acquired Edward Mujica for Zachary Cox.
  • Marlins are close to sending Gaby Sanchez to Pirates for Gorkys Hernandez.
  • UPDATE:  According to Ken Rosenthal Gaby Sanchez to the Pirates is a done deal.  This also includes a competitive balance pick going to the Marlins.
  • Red Sox to acquire Craig Breslow for Matt Albers and Scott Podsednik.
  • The Reds have traded for Jonathan Broxton.  The Royals got AAA lefty Donnie Joseph and AA JC Sulbaran
  • Casey McGehee traded to the Yankees for Chad Qualls.

This is what is out there right now, some deals may still be coming in, but I think that is it for now.

White Sox Stay Active; Acquire Liriano

Another arm is off the market, not sure if he was ever “on the market” but Francisco Liriano is headed to the White Sox.  Kenny Williams has been busy this trade season as he sees an opportunity to win now and he’s going for it.  The Sox get Liriano for Eduardo Escobar, and Pedro Hernandez.  That’s two arms that could have went to the Braves in a deal, but didn’t.  Maybe that will make the Braves a little more desperate as we get closer to the deadline and come back at the Cubs for Dempster.  Same goes for the Dodgers, hopefully Garza proves himself healthy in his side session and a deal can be made, although it seems highly unlikely.

The Worst Call you Will See All Year, Maybe Ever

People mistakes, and umpires are people, but when an umpire makes a mistake it usually on TV everyone to see it.  That was the case yesterday in Colorado when Tim Welke took center stage.  It was top of the 6th inning, and Jerry Harriston just hit a ground ball to third.  Chris Nelson of the Rockies made a great play but his throw pulled Helton off the bag.  Here is a screen grab via Deadspin.

He was called out.

Process that for a second.  I know umpires usually get caught up in the moment and when there is a great play in the field they usually give the benefit of the doubt to the defensive team on a bang-bang play.  This was not one of those times.  Insert Bob Brenly rant about instant replay here.  Like I said, they make mistakes, and sometimes it’s so bad that it’s comical, but this could have been avoided.  Umpires are stubborn, they can never be wrong on a play, Welke could have easily got some help from the other umpires, but that wouldn’t be “right” but calling Harriston out was?
