5/9: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is your nightly recap for the Cubs minor league system, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Peoria dropped a nail biter to Belot on Wednesday night but that’s not the story.  The story is Paul Hoilman going 2-for-4 and extending his hit streak to 22 games which is a franchise record, Hoilman is now hitting .310 on the season.  Taiwan Easterling and Oliver Zapata each had two hits in the losing effort.  Kyler Burke was outstanding on the mound for Peoria going 6 and 1/3rd of an inning while only allowing two runs, it wasn’t enough however as Burke dropped to 0-2 on the season.

 Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-4 at the plate, and that was it as Daytona could only muster two hits the whole night in a 5-1 loss to Charlotte.  Zach Cates was tagged for the loss as he went five innings while allowing four runs on 8 hits, he falls to 0-5 on the season.

 The Smokies were also shut down on Wednesday night as they could only manage one run on four hits in a 4-1 loss to Birmingham.  Logan Watkins was the only threat in the Smokies lineup going 3-for-4 with a double.  Dallas Beeler took the loss after giving up three runs across 3 and 1/3rds of an inning.  Beeler falls to 0-2 despite a respectable ERA of 3.89.

 That one hurts, the I-Cubs rallied for six runs in the 8th inning to take a 7-2 lead only to watch that lead disappear in the final two innings ending in an 8-7 loss to Fresno.  Luis Valbuena and Alfredo Amezaga each had two hits in the losing effort.  Anthony Rizzo had the big hit of the game, at least at that point as he drove his PCL leading 10th home run over the wall for a 3-2 Iowa lead.  Fresno rallied for three in the 8th and three in the 9th to steal victory away from Iowa.  Frankie De La Cruz was outstanding out of the pen going three scoreless innings in relief of Rodrigo Lopez.  Frank Batista and Scott Maine couldn’t slam the door on the victory and they each gave up three runs in relief.

5/6: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is your nightly recap for the Cubs minor league system, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Peoria’s pitching had a rough weekend.  One night after giving up 20 runs to Quad Cities they gave up 9 in a 9-2 defeat.  Wes Darvill and Rafael Lopez each had two hits in the losing effort.  Brad Zapenas was 1-for-1 with a double and three walks.  Michael Jensen was beat up on the mound for Peoria as he took the loss, dropping his record to 3-2 on the season.

Austin Kirk was outstanding once again, however he had to settle for a no decision as the bullpen couldn’t hold a late 3-2 lead.  Jupiter tied the game in the 8th and 9th innings, only to have Daytona walk off in the ninth for a 5-4 victory.  Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-5 with two triples and two RBI’s.  Matt Szczur continues to turn his season around slowly but surely going 1-for-4 and stealing his 16th base of the season.

Junior Lake made his Smokies debut on Sunday and he didn’t disappoint.  One of the Cubs top infield prospected went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.  Elliot Soto also had two hits and an RBI in the losing effort.  Brooks Raley had a solid day on the mound going a strong six innings for a no decision as the Smokies couldn’t hold on to a 2-0 lead and ended up losing 4-2.

Brett Jackson had a big day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Unfortunately that wasn’t enough as Iowa fell to New Orleans 12-4.  Luis Valbuena and Alfredo Amezaga each had two hits as well.  Iowa pitching got beat up top to bottom, Jay Jackson took the loss after surrendering five runs in four innings of work.

5/4: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is your nightly recap for the Cubs minor league system, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

The Peoria Chiefs made thing interesting by tying the game in the top of the 9th, unfortunately they lost the game in the bottom half.  Marco Hernandez, and Taiwan Easterling each had two hits in the losing effort.  Kyler Burke was very good for Peoria on the mound going 6 and 1/3rds of an inning, only allowing three runs on five hits, he settled for a no decision.

 All of the action took place early and often in this one as all 11 runs were scored in the first four innings, unfortunately Daytona came out on the short end of this one 6-5.  Rubi Silva, Greg Rohan and Nelson Perez did most of the damage for the D-Cubs.  They finished a combined 4-for-11 with three doubles, four RBI’s and four runs scored.  Zach Cates was beat up a bit in his three innings of work as he gave up five runs, four earned as he took a no decision.

 A wild one in Tennessee saw the Smokies build a 5-1 lead early in the game only to fall 8-7 to Montgomery.  The Smokies pounded out 12 hits, with all but one starter joining the party.  Logan Watkins, Michael Brenly, Matthew Cerda, and Nate Samson all had two hits in the losing effort.  Matthew Cerda and Justin Bour contributed with home runs as well.  Dallas Beeler scattered 11 hits through 5 and 1/3rds of an inning giving up six runs but only three were earned as he walked away with a no decision.

 Now that’s the definition of a good old fashion pitchers duel right there.  In a game that featured only one run, and nine hits, the Iowa Cubs walked off on a wild pitch.  Luis Valbuena had 3 of the I-Cubs’ six hits with Anthony Rizzo adding two more.  Rizzo scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth on said wild pitch.  The I-Cubs staff was stellar, Rodrigo Lopez, Frankie De La Cruz, and Blake Parker held New Orleans to three hits on the night with Parker getting the victory.

4/24: I-Cubs Punchless in Finale

Travis Wood had a solid effort on Tuesday, but the I-Cubs couldn’t muster any offense in a 4-0 defeat to Memphis.  Welington Castillo, and Luis Valbuena each had two hits, but the I-Cubs couldn’t string anything together against Shelby Miller and the Cardinals.  Full box score after the jump.
