Bye, Bye, Byrdie
It’s official, Marlon Byrd has been traded to the Boston Red Sox. In return the Chicago Cubs will receive 25 year old right-handed pitcher Michael Bowden and the ever famous, player to be named later. The Cubs will pay most of Byrd’s remaining salary, which is $6.5MM. Bowden, who played High School baseball at Waubonsie Valley in Aurora was drafted 47th overall in 2005. We don’t yet know what this means for the Cubs going forward. Is it Brett Jackson time right now, or will we have to wait for him to patrol CF in Wrigley a little bit longer. As more becomes known we will let you know.

Return Home Can’t Help Cubs; Drop Sixth Straight
The weather is miserable in the Chicagoland area today, but it’s not as bad as the Cubs, they are ice-cold. Thanks to a rocky outing from Chris Volstad, and some bad defensive work, stop me if you’ve heard this before, the Cubs have dropped their sixth in a row. Right from the hop it was apparent that the Cubs probably didn’t have a chance today. Before the sparse crowd could even get settled the Reds were up 4-0 in the top of the first inning against Volstad. Things never really got better for the Cubs as every time they tried to mount a comeback the Reds were able to tack on to their lead. When it was all said and done, the Reds walk out with a 9-4 victory, in which the Cubs almost had more errors (3) than runs (4) and hits (5). Full Recap after the jump.
What’s up with Byrd?
On the surface the transformation is startling, Marlon Byrd looks way different from when he joined the Cubs before the 2010 season. Let’s get this out-of-the-way now, this is in no way, shape, or form an attack on Marlon Byrd, and we can leave the “S” word out of it, because that’s not what this is about. I think it’s fair to question the drastic difference in his appearance, but I will never accuse anyone of anything.
Cubs Go Down Fighting Against Brewers

There are going to be games like this one, odds are there are going to be a lot of games like this one, and I’m okay with that. The Cubs have now lost three of their first four games on the season, and probably couldn’t lose three more difficult ways if they tried. Monday night’s episode included two successful squeeze bunts by the Brewers, and a furious ninth inning rally only to end in horrible, mind numbing defeat.
RUMOR: Cubs Inquire About John Lannan
It has been reported by Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times that the Cubs have shown interest in acquiring LHP John Lannan from the Washington Nationals this week. The Cubs have apparently already discussed the left-handed throwing Lannan and former Cub Tom Gorzelanny. Lannan, 27 requested a trade earlier this week after he was optioned to the minor leagues. He is set to earn $5MM this year and is under team control through 2013. It is speculated that Marlon Byrd would be going back to Washington in the deal, but only time will tell if this rumor has any truth to it or not.

Castro Speaks
“You’ve got to be careful because there are a lot of bad people in the world.” This coming from Castro today, marking the first day he has spoken to the media about the alleged sexual assault case. He would not say much more about the claim except that he has cooperated with the police, which he talked to when he was in town for the Cubs Convention in mid January. (more…)
