Welcome back Matt Garza. The long and winding road that started just before the trade deadline last year has finally reached its end. It’s a journey that is not lost on Garza, “I’m just excited, just happy that I don’t have to go rehab again. This actually means something. But I can’t wait. It’s been 10 months in the making. I’m excited to get back out there.” There has definitely been more ups than downs, but Garza finally appears healthy and will return to the mound for the Cubs on Tuesday in Pittsburgh. As it has been speculated by me and many others for the last week or so Carlos Villanueva has to give up his spot. Villanueva has been good for the Cubs, he will look to use his stuff out of the pen now, and should be given a decent shot given the struggles of Shawn Camp. Sveum respects how Villanueva handled it,
“He was very professional about it and understood,” manager Dale Sveum said. “We all know that he’s kind of been in this role, the swingman, so to speak. So he understands it. He accepts it. Very professional about the whole thing.
“He’s got the ability to pitch late in the game because of the repertoire he has, according to matchups. You’re not afraid to use him against left-handed hitters with his changeup and his ability to backdoor breaking balls and do things like that. He’s obviously built up to do a lot of things.
A roster move will have to be made to get Garza back on the active roster, obviously I will pass that along once it had been announced. This is great news as Garza should make the Cubs starting rotation just that much better, and it has already been well above average so far this season. I don’t know about you but I am anxiously awaiting Garza’s first throw to first base, should be exhilarating.
