Mike Olt Smashes a Baseball (VIDEO)

The Cubs aren’t doing so well tonight, but there has been a few bright spots.  One of them is this Mike Olt blast, Olt has been impressive so far this spring as he has his sights set on an opening day roster spot.

Soler Meme

The Cubs and Diamondbacks battle under the lights tonight, 8:40 PM CST to be exact, and the game is on CSN Chicago.  Edwin Jackson gets the ball for the Cubs tonight looking to build on a strong start his last time out.  Decisions are looming in regards to who makes the team, and specifically who makes the rotation.  The 5th spot looks to be coming down to Travis Wood, and Edwin Jackson, I think Wood has that spot nailed down, but then that leaves a question mark of what to do with Jackson.  A good start might go a long way for Jackson who I don’t think will be an effective arm out of the pen, he really hasn’t been effective in the rotation either, we’ll see.

1. Fowler – CF
2. Coghlan – LF
3. Castro – SS
4. Rizzo – 1B
5. Soler – RF
6. Olt – 3B

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, if you’re into that kind of thing.  Jason Hammel gets the ball for the Cubs as the host the defending AL champ the Kansas City Royals, still sounds weird saying that.  First pitch today is at 3:05 PM CST, there is no TV that I’m aware of, but the game can be heard through mlb.com.  It’s been a rough spring for Hammel, I don’t think it’s more than just working on his stuff, but it would be nice to see him find a groove today.  Three big surprises from camp so far are in the lineup today, Mike Olt, Junior Lake, and Matt Szczur, all are fighting for spots on the opening day roster.

1. Fowler – CF
2. Denorfia – DH
3. Rizzo – 1B
4. Castro – SS
5. Montero – C
6. Lake – RF

Bryant

After a sluggish start this Spring the Cubs have turned things around going 5-2 in their last seven, and winning four straight.  Jon Lester will take the mound hoping to extend that streak this afternoon against Brandon Morrow and the Padres.  Lester has been really good so far this spring, look for 4-5 innings today based on how quickly he can mow down Padre hitters.  First pitch this afternoon is at 3:05 pM CST, the game is on MLB.tv with a subscription, and also on MLB Network.  Here is how the Cubs will lineup today, Kris Bryant is back in the lineup, so is Soler, excitement.

1. Alcantara – 3B
2. Coghlan – LF
3. Castro – SS
4. Soler – RF
5. Bryant – DH
6. Sweeney – CF
7. Castillo – C
8. Olt – 1B
9. Valaika – 2B

SP – Jon Lester

Hendricks

Two more games today as the Cubs take on the Athletics at 2:05 PM CST in Vegas, and also battle the Brewers at 3:05 PM CST.  Kyle Hendricks gets the ball against the A’s, the game can be listened to through mlb.tv, but there is no TV.  Back in Arizona, Edwin Jackson will take the mound against the Brewers, the game can be watched, and listened to on mlb.tv with a subscription.  It’s a big start for Jackson as he needs to show this coaching staff something or else he will not be in the rotation, I still think he loses out to Travis Wood.

vs. Athletics – 2:05 PM CST -Vegas

1. Fowler – CF
2. Rizzo – DH
3. Soler – RF
4. Bryant 3B
5. Lake – LF
6. La Stella – 2B
7. Valaika – 1B
8. Teagarden – C
9. Herrera – SS

SP – Kyle Hendricks

@ Brewers – 3:05 PM CST

4. Sweeney – DH
5. Olt – 3B
6. Baxter – 1B
7. Castillo – C
8. Chambers – RF
9. Szczur – CF

SP – Edwin Jackson

Some things to keep an eye on for today.  Both Matt Szczur, and Junior Lake have had a really good spring, both guys are vying for bench spots on the 2015 opening day roster.  While I think Szczur has the edge because of his defense, I’ve been very impressed with Junior Lake’s purpose at the plate, it clearly has carried over from Winter League ball.  Joe Maddon said not to read too much into Rizzo batting second, and he’s there again today, so start reading into it.  Mike Olt is getting every day at bats right now because he has earned them, he’s winning the third base job with his Spring so far, he needs to keep progressing to nail it down.

jason-hammel

The Cubs will hit the road today as they take on the Angels at 3:10 PM CST.  Jason Hammel will get the ball for the Cubs looking to rebound from his first start which wasn’t so great.  Today’s game can be seen on MLB.tv with a paid subscription, or listened to through the same device with an MLB.com account.  There were whispers that MLB Network would pick up the game because of Will Ferrell’s appearance, but I’m not 100% sure on that.

1. Denorfia – DH
2. Baez – 2B
3. Soler – RF
4. Olt – 1B
5. Bryant – 3B
6. Lake – LF
7. Castillo – C
8. Russell – SS
9. Szczur – CF

SP – Jason Hammel

Impressions?  Joe Maddon is doing his best to get Mike Olt in the lineup every single day, that should tell you something.  The last time Baez, Soler, Bryant, and Russell were in the lineup there were a bunch of LOUD NOISES, hope that happens again today.

Lester ST

The Cubs will win today…. or they won’t, it doesn’t really matter at this point, but it would be fun to see a “W.”  Jon Lester makes his second appearance of the spring today as the Cubs take on Zack Greinke and the Dodgers.  First pitch today is at 3:05 PM CST, and can be seen on MLB.tv if you have a subscription, and the game is also on MLB Network if you have that.  Here is how the Cubs will lineup today…

1. Fowler – CF
2. Rizzo – 1B
3. Castro – SS
4. Montero – C
5. Coghlan – LF
6. Olt – 3B
7. Sweeney – RF
8. Alcantara – 2B
9. Baxter – DH

Impressions?  Well, Rizzo is back in the second spot, I still don’t think he will end up there, but he’s been there more often than not this spring.  Arismendy Alcantara is clearly the “Ben Zobrist” of the Cubs in Maddon’s eyes, and that’s a pretty great thing.  Let’s see if Mike Olt can continue his hot spring as he battles for a roster spot, I hope he does.

Cubs Falter Late (Twice) but Dingers Everywhere!

cubs-giants-3-5-15FULL BOX SCORE

The young Cubs provided the fireworks early against the Giants before the bullpen couldn’t find away to get outs, and blew a 5-0 lead en route to an 8-6 loss.  It was a lineup that had Cubs fans buzzing, Jorge Soler, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, and Kyle Schwarber, oh my.  It was Schwarber who did the heavy lifting as he jacked a grand slam in his first at bat, giving the Cubs an early 4-0 lead.  The Cubs pitching made that hold up early on as Jacob Turner, and Pierce Johnson were on top of their game, Johnson was particularly impressive.

At the plate:

  • Kyle Schwarber was the star at the plate going 1-for-3 with said grand slam.
  • Jorge Soler hit a number of balls hard, he finished the day 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Billy McKinney came on late and went deep, he finished the day 1-for-1 with an RBI.
  • Kris Bryant went 0-for-2 with a walk, and a run scored.
  • Addison Russell was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Albert Almora didn’t start but finished the day 2-for-2, good to see.

On the mound:

  • Jacob Turner got the start, and battled command early, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while walking two, and striking out one.
  • Pierce Johnson was outstanding, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up no hits while walking one, and striking out one.
  • Corey Black struggled, he worked one inning, giving up one run on one hit while walking two, and hitting Hunter Pence, breaking his forearm, ouch.
  • Hunter Cervenka was worse, he was only able to register one out, he gave up five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking two.

cubs-as-3-5-15FULL BOX SCORE

A tie.  The Cubs and A’s tied today.  Mike Olt got the offense off and running early as he blasted a two-out, two-run bomb.  Unfortunately that was all the Cubs could muster as they went scoreless the rest of the way while scratching out only five hits.  The pitching was outstanding as Travis Wood, Neil Ramirez, and Drake Britton, among others, shut down the Athletics offense.

At the plate:

  • MIKE OLT!  Olt finished theday 1-for-2 with a home run, and two RBI.
  • Chris Coghlan was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
  • Newcomer Miguel Montero was 1-for-2 in the tie.

On the mound:

  • Travis Wood got the start, and was flawless.  Wood worked two scoreless innings giving up no hits, walking none while striking out two.
  • Neil Ramirez was stupid good per usual.  Ramirez worked one scoreless inning while striking out two.
  • Drake Britton was pretty good in his first audition for a bullpen spot.  Britton worked a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
  • Gonzalez Germen had the plate jump around a bit, but he was fairly effective.  Germen worked two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while walking two, and striking out two.

Hammel Time as Cubs Outlast Pirates

Cubs 4-9-14

Full Box Score

Two games into his Cubs career, Jason Hammel is 2-0, both wins coming against the NL Central rival Pirates.  Hammel was brilliant once again, as he worked seven strong innings, giving up three runs on three hits (all solo HR’s, more on that later), while walking one, and striking Olt Hr 4-9-14out six.  Pedro Strop made things interesting in the ninth as he gave up two more solo home runs to make things closer than they needed to be.  The Pirates had six hits tonight, five of which left the ballpark, and the Cubs still won, baseball.

More good signs from the Cubs offense in this one as well, the Cubs scored seven times on fourteen hits in the win.  (Insert Emilio Bonifacio had two hits sentence).  Anthony Rizzo is scorching hot right now, he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored, he’s now hitting .375 on the season.  Mike Olt, finally getting a start, responded in a big way, he went 2-for-5 with his second home run of the season, three RBI’s, and a run scored.  Same goes for Junior Lake, as he went 1-for-4 with his first home run of the season, two RBI’s, and a run scored.

Tomorrow should be a dandy, as Travis Wood battles Gerrit Cole in the rubber game.

April 2, 2014 — Cubs Lineup/Preview @ Pittsburgh

Game two.

We are getting an early look at what Ricky Renteria might do on a daily basis with the lineup.  The good?  I like sitting Barney and giving Bonifacio a start at second base against the right-handed pitcher.  The bad?  I don’t like that Olt is sitting in game two after an off-day, I think he is the every day third baseman so he should be in there.  I understand the though process, I just want him to play as much as possible.  I also like that Ryan Kalish gets an opportunity tonight, I think a lot of people will be fans of his immediately.

First pitch is at 6:05 PM CST on Comcast SportsNet Plus

1. 2B – Emilio Bonifacio
2. 3B – Luis Valbuena
3. SS – Starlin Castro
4. 1B – Anthony Rizzo
5. RF – Nate Schierholtz
6. CF – Ryan Sweeney
8. LF – Ryan Kalish
9. P – Edwin Jackson

Here’s how the Pirates will line up.

1. LF – Starling Marte
2. RF – Travis Snider
3. CF – Andrew McCutchen
4. 3B – Pedro Alvarez
5. C – Russell Martin
6. 2B – Neil Walker
7. 1B – Travis Ishikawa
8. SS – Jordy Mercer
9. P – Charlie Morton
