5/30: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/30/12, enjoy.

Iowa was rained out, and that’s stupid.

FULL BOX SCORE

Not much went right for Peoria on Wednesday Night as they fell to Burlington 10-1.  Peoria made three errors on the night, which led to six unearned runs.  Ben Wells started for Peoria and he wasn’t too bad in three and a-third innings, he gave up one run, unearned on four hits.  Wes Darvill, and Yaniel Cabezas each had two hits in the loss with Cabezas knocking in the only Chiefs run.

****

FULL BOX SCORE

Trailing 5-3 heading into the ninth the Daytona Cubs rallied for three runs to knock off Brevard County 6-5 in a thriller.  Frank Del Valle had a rare off outing as he was only able to last four and a-third while giving up five runs, all earned on four hits.  The D-Cubs bullpen really did the job as they went the remaining four and two-thirds without giving up a run to keep the team in it.  John Andreoli was 2-for-3 in the lead-off spot with two walks and a run scored.  Arismendy Alcantara continued his stellar 2012 campaign as he went 2-for-5 at the plate, he is now hitting .304 on the season.  Greg Rohan continues to hit as he went 2-for-5 at the plate with his 10th home run of the season.

****

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies only managed four runs on five hits en route to a 6-4 loss to Huntsville on Wednesday night.  Dallas Beeler has a rough outing as he only made it through four and a-third while giving up five runs, four earned on nine hits, he falls to 1-5 on the season but has an ERA of 4.22 which isn’t terrible.  Junior Lake was the one of the few Smokies going at the plate last night as he was 2-for-5 with his 3rd home run of the season.  Michael Brenly was 1-for-3 at the plate with his first home run of the season, he drove in two runs and scored two.

5/29: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/29/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

It almost took all night, well it actually did, but the Chiefs walked off in the 14th inning to beat Wisconsin 4-3.  Kyler Burke started for the Chiefs and was good, but struggled with his command.  He went five innings and only allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit.  Burke walked five guys which is why he did not go deeper into the game.  Ryan Cuneo was 2-for-5 with his fourth home run of the season.  Javy Baez was 0-for-5 on the night but did have a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.

FULL BOX SCORE Game 1   /   FULL BOX SCORE Game 2

Game 1:  Robert Whitenack made his 2012 debut with the D-Cubs after coming back from Tommy John Surgery, and it didn’t go so well.  Whitenack gave up ten hits over four and a-third while giving up three runs to take the loss.  The D-Cubs couldn’t get anything going offensively as they only scored one run on six hits.  Richard Jones was 2-for-3 with a double at the plate in a losing effort.

Game 2:  PJ Francescon went the distance (only 7 innings in double-headers) but ended up on the wrong end of the decision as Brevard County completed the double-header sweep with a 5-2 win over Daytona.  Francescon went six innings and gave up five runs all earned, on eight hits, he walked three and struck out five.  Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run.  Greg Rohan was 1-for-3 at the plate with his 9th home run on the season and two RBI’s.

****

FULL BOX SCORE

Nicholas Struck was outstanding as he shut down the Huntsville Stars over six innings to lead the Smokies to a 3-2 victory.  Struck didn’t give up any runs over six innings, he allowed only three hits, walked one, and struck out nine.  Junior Lake was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the lead-off spot.  Jae-Hoon Ha also had two hits in the victory, a victory that was closed out by Kevin Rhoderick.  Rhoderick has been lights out, he earned his 6th save of the season and lowered his ERA to 0.83.

****

FULL BOX SCORE

The I-Cubs have something going right now, they staged a furious rally to beat Omaha 5-4 for their 5th straight victory.  Trailing 4-1 in the 8th inning against the first place team was nothing for this group.  The I-Cubs scored two runs in the 7th and added two more in the 8th to cap the thrilling victory.  Josh Vitters is on a roll once again as he was 2-for-4 at the plate with his 7th home run of the season, he also had a walk and two runs scored.  Dave Sappelt continues to be a two-hit machine as he was 2-for-4 in the victory.  Chris Rusin started for the Cubs, and ended with a no decision as he gave up four runs in six innings of work.

5/28: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/28/12, enjoy.

Daytona was off

FULL BOX SCORE

Jose Rosario was outstanding Monday, unfortunately the Chiefs offense couldn’t provide any offense for him as the Chiefs fell 3-1 to Wisconsin.  Rosario was lights out going seven strong innings allowing one run on three hits, while walking no one and striking out seven.  2011 first round pick Javy Baez made his Peoria debut and he didn’t disappoint.  Baez was 2-for-4 in his first Peoria game, both hits were singles.  Zeke DeVoss was 1-for-4 on the day with a double, and he stole his 12th bag of the season.

****

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies fell behind early, and by a lot as Huntsville built up a 7-1 lead by the third inning which was too much for Tennessee as they fell 8-4.  Dae-Eun Rhee was knocked around quite a bit, he only lasted two and one-third giving up seven runs, all earned, on nine hits, while walking two.  Rhee’s record falls to 3-2 on the season while his ERA sky-rockets to 5.50.  Rebel Ridling continued his power surge as he went 1-for-4 with his 6th home run of the season.  Luis Flores was 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and two RBI’s.

****

FULL BOX SCORE

Brooks Raley rebounded from his last outing to pitch very well to earn his first AAA win and extend the I-Cubs winning streak to four.  Raley went five innings only giving up two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.  The I-Cubs offense didn’t miss a beat with Rizzo sidelined.  They pounded out 15 hits and 8 runs en route to the 8-2 victory.  Five different Cubs had multi-hit games.  Josh Vitters was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI’s.  Brett Jackson was also 2-for-5 at the plate with his 7th triple of the season.  Dave Sappelt continues his resurgence at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

5/27: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/25/12, enjoy.

Daytona – rained out
Tennessee – day off

FULL BOX SCORE

The Chiefs did everything but win against Wisconsin as they surrendered two runs in the top of the ninth to lose 3-2.  Michael Jensen was outstanding on the mound for the Chiefs as he went six strong innings only allowing one run on four hits, walking two and striking out eight.  Jensen’s ERA drops to 2.77 on the season, but he settled for a no decision.  Taiwan Easterling was responsible for the majority of the Chiefs offense as he went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI in the losing effort.

****

FULL BOX SCORE

The biggest news out of the Iowa game was of course about Anthony Rizzo, but not for what he did with his bat.  Rizzo was lifted for a pinch hitter in the sixth inning leading many to speculate that he was on his way to Chicago.  The news was much worse however as Rizzo actually exited the game because of a sore right wrist, hopefully that is nothing serious.  The I-Cubs keep on winning though as they beat Memphis 5-1 behind a strong effort from Chris Volstad.  Volstad improved to 2-0 with the win as he went seven strong innings.  Alfredo Amezaga, Dave Sappelt, Luis Valbuena, and Josh Vitters all had two hits in the victory.  Carlos Marmol had an encouraging outing as he pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out the side.

5/25: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/25/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Peoria jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and that was all they needed as they knocked off Clinton 3-1.  Starling Peralta was very good for the Chiefs as he worked four innings only allowing one run on five hits while walking one and striking out two.  Zeke DeVoss got things started at the top as he was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored.  Paul Hoilman continues to hit the ball hard as he went 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, he is now hitting .298 on the season.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Heartbreaking, that’s the only way you can describe the D-Cubs loss to Clearwater as they fell 2-1, giving up both runs in the top of the ninth.  The blown save spoiled Austin Kirk’s outstanding performance on the mound.  Kirk, who has been one of the best pitchers in the Cubs organization this year went 8 scoreless innings, only allowing seven hits, walking none, and striking out four, his ERA is now at 2.34 on the season.  Micah Gibbs, Rubi Silva, and Dustin Harrington all had three hits at the plate as Daytona finished with one run on nine hits.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies held Mobile in check all night, but that was almost not good enough as Mobile’s comeback came up short giving the Smokies a 4-3 win.  Mobile only had two hits on the night, but managed to plate three runs, timely hitting I guess.  Eric Jokisch was really good for the Smokies tossing five innings of one hit baseball, he only allowed two runs, walked one, and struck out three.  Kevin Rhoderick came on in relief and was lights out, what else is new, his ERA drops to 0.90 on the season.  Luis Flores was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run and an RBI.  Jae-Hoon Ha popped his second home run of the season, and James Adduci finished his day 2-for-2, he’s now hitting .312 on the year.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Anthony Rizzo did not start so might as well skip this game, I’m kidding of course.  Rodrigo Lopez started this game and left after one pitch with a sore groin.  Jay Jackson jumped into duty and was terrific going five innings allowing one run on three hits, he walked two, and struck out five.  Carlos Marmol got some work in on his way back to the Cubs, he worked one inning, giving up a hit and a walk with a strike out.  The I-Cubs only managed five hits, but had just enough to pull out a 2-1 win.  Luis Valbuena was 1-for-4 at the plates with a game winning solo home run in the ninth inning.

5/24: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Kyler Burke was fantastic yet again on Thursday night as he earned his first win of the season going six innings only allowing one run, unearned on two hits, his ERA dropped to 2.31 on the season.  The Chiefs had the bats going as they pounded out 13 hits, every Chiefs player had a hit in the win.  Oliver Zapata was 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and two RBI’s. he’s now hitting .284 on the season.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Daytona was in a hitting mood as they knocked out 11 hits, unfortunately they couldn’t string anything together and fell to St. Lucie 5-2.  Greg Rohan continued his solid season as he went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI.  Ryan Searle struggled on the mound for the D-Cubs as he dropped his first game of the season.  Searle only last 3 and 2/3rds while giving up three runs on six hits in the loss.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Junior Lake won’t stop hitting, and that’s a good thing, the young star in the making was 2-for-4 in the loss, his average is now at .328 on the season.  Dallas Beeler struggled with his command in this one, however Beeler still battled through six innings earning a quality start.  Unfortunately the Smokies offense couldn’t plate another run and Beeler was hung with the loss as he dropped to 1-4 on the season.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Sorry boys and girls, Anthony Rizzo didn’t hit a home run today, he did rope a double off the top of the wall so he came close at least.  The I-Cubs fell behind early and often and couldn’t dig out of that hole as they fell to Tacoma 7-2.  Brett Jackson and Ty Wright each had two hits, but the I-Cubs could only muster a total of 8 knocks in the loss.  Chris Rusin finally had a rough outing as he only lasted four innings while allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits to take his 4th loss of the season.

5/23: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/23/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Nothing went right for Peoria on Wednesday as they were pounded by Clinton 11-0.  The Chiefs only managed five hits on the day, two of which from Yaniel Cabezas.  It got worse on the mound as Jose Rosario was not very good in 3 and 2/3rds of an inning, he gave up nine runs, all earned, on nine hits.  The bright spot was Jeffery Lorick tossing two more spotless innings while striking out three, his ERA is now 0.52.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

The D-Cubs staged a comeback and looked like they were on their way to a victory Wednesday, but that was before St. Lucie had a rally of their own en route to an 8-7 victory.  Ronald Torreyes looking to get his season back on track went 3-for-3 with a double, and two RBI’s.  Greg Rohan launched his seventh home run of the season in the loss.  Frank Del Valle struggled on the mound for Daytona as he gave up five runs in five innings, he didn’t get any help from his defense as only two of those runs were earned.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

A wild first four innings yielded 13 total runs, unfortunately the Smokies were on the short end of that total and couldn’t muster much after that as they fell 8-6 to Mobile.  Junior Lake is raking right now as he went 2-for-5 with a double and a run, he is now hitting .317 on the season.  James Adduci, Justin Bour, and Rebel Ridling all had two hits in the loss with Ridling hitting another home run.  Nicholas Struck had a rare poor outing as he surrendered six runs, all earned in three innings of work.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Anthony Rizzo just won’t stop, the phenom was 2-for-4 with his 16th home run of the season in an 8-3 loss to Tacoma.  Brooks Raley made his Iowa debut and had a rough go of it.  Raley gave up five runs, only three earned as he suffered his first loss.  Josh Vitters continues to hit as he went 3-for-4 in the loss, he also had a double and an RBI, he is now hitting .267 on the season.

5/21: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/21/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Crazy finish sees Peoria’s rally fall just short as they lost to Cedar Rapids 5-4 last night.  Tied at two for most of the game Cedar Rapids plated three runs in the bottom of the 8th to lead 5-2.  Peoria fought back with two runs in the top of the ninth but couldn’t come all the way back.  Michael Jensen pitched well enough for the win but finished his night with a no decision after 5 and 1/3rd innings of work.  Peoria couldn’t string any hits together, Paul Hoilman finished the night 2-for-5 and Oliver Zapata was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Matt Loosen was really good again for Daytona as he went 6 and 2/3rds while only allowing one run on two hits.  Loosen was in line for the loss but the D-Cubs pushed a run across in the 7th to tie it.  Trailing 3-1 into the bottom of the ninth the D-Cubs came all the way back and walked off to win 4-3.  Matt Szczur had a big hand in the win going 2-for-4 again as his average is now up to .265.  Arismendy Alcantara, Chad Noble, and John Andreoli all had two hits in the victory.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

For seven innings it looked like the Smokies were on their way to another win, but the bullpen couldn’t hold it as they surrendered five runs in the 8th en route to an 8-5 loss.  Dae-Eun Rhee was in line for the win after going six strong innings, giving up three runs on eight hits.  Junior Lake was 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk and a run scored, he is now hitting .283 on the season.  Rebel Ridling seems to be heating up as he went deep again for his fourth home run on the season, third in his last two games.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Jay Jackson didn’t have it last night as he only lasted three innings while giving up six runs on nine hits on his way to his fourth loss of the season as Iowa fell 8-2 to Tacoma.  Alfredo Amezaga was 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks, a double, and two runs scored.  Blake DeWitt and Juan Apodaca each had two hits in the loss.  The I-Cubs walked a total of 10 times, but only scored two times, inopportune to say the least.

5/20: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/20/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

The Chiefs needed extra innings to beat Cedar Rapids 9-6 on Sunday after they blew leads of 4-0 and 6-4 in the ninth.  Gerardo Concepcion had his second decent outing in a row and was in line for his second win before Cedar Rapids tied it in the ninth.  Concepcion went five innings while allowing four runs on six hits.  The Chiefs offense was in high gear as they pounded out 15 hits and 9 runs in the win.  Taylor Davis was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI’s.  Rafael Lopez, Paul Hoilman, Anthony Giansanti, and Oliver Zapata all had two hits.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Austin Kirk finally had a poor outing, probably my fault because I wrote about him last week.  Kirk had his shortest outing of the season going two and 1/3rd of an inning while allowing six runs to suffer his first loss of the season.  Kirk’s ERA still sits at a sparkling 2.68 after giving up six runs.  The D-Cubs couldn’t string together much at the plate as the top of the order had trouble getting on base.  Nelson Perez, and Elieser Bonne each had two hits in the losing effort.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Trey McNutt continued his solid season on Sunday as he went five innings to earn his second victory of the season.  McNutt gave up three runs, however only one was earned as he lowered his ERA to 2.67.  The middle of the order was once again productive for the Smokies.  Jae-Hoon Ha collected two more hits in the victory as he raised his average to .265 on the season.  Rebel Ridling had a huge day at the plate going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI’s.

 ***

FULL BOX SCORE

For the second straight day the Iowa Cubs couldn’t find any offense as they lost to Salt Lake 2-1.  Rodrigo Lopez was nearly un-hittable as he only allowed one hit over six innings or work, unfortunately he was tagged with a no decision.  Jeff Beliveau had a solid day out of the bullpen going two innings and striking out three.  The I-Cubs were only able to scratch out five hits and one run.  Brett Jackson was 1-for-5 with a double, and Josh Vitters was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

5/19: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is the recap of the Cubs minor league system from 5/19/12, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

A wild second inning saw the Chiefs take a 4-0 lead in the top half, then trail 5-4 in the bottom half en route to a 7-6 loss to Cedar Rapids.   Kyler Burke made the start for Peoria and didn’t get much help from his defense.  Burke gave up six runs over five innings, however only three were earned as Burke finished with a no decision.  Pin-Chieh Chen went 1-for-3 at the plate with his first home run of the season, and three RBI’s.  Paul Hoilman and Taylor Davis each had two hits in the losing effort.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Daytona built up a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 5th, but couldn’t hold it as they surrendered five runs in said 5th en route to a 5-3 loss to Palm Beach.  Eric Jokisch started for the D-Cubs and probably had his worst outing of the season as he gave up five runs in just 4 and 2/3rds of an inning on his way to his fourth loss of the season.  Matt Szczur is on fire as he launched his first home run of the season while going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI’s, he also added a double for good measure.  Szczur now has his average up to .265 on the season thanks in part to him hitting .385 over his last 10 games.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies and Braves combined for 22 hits but only five total runs in a 3-2 Smokies win.  Dallas Beeler was just good enough to get his first win of the season as he went five innings giving up two runs on eight hits.  Jae-Hoon Ha was 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a walk and a run scored as the middle of the lineup did most of the damage.  Rebel Ridling and Justin Bour each finished with two hits, with Ridling driving in one, and Bour driving in two.

***

FULL BOX SCORE

Not a good night for the I-Cubs as they were shut down by the Salt Lake Bees in a 6-1 defeat.  Iowa only managed three hits on the night as they couldn’t get anything going against the Bees staff.  Chris Rusin turned in a quality start going six innings while giving up three runs on seven hits but took his 3rd loss of the season.  Mike MacDougal who has done nothing but crap the bed since he was signed gave up two more runs over two innings of work, his ERA sits at 13.50.  Brett Jackson, Anthony Rizzo, and Josh Vitters each had a hit, and that was it for the Iowa offense.  Jackson had a triple and Rizzo had a double in the losing effort.
