Randy Wells turned in an outstanding performance against the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon, going three scoreless innings, Travis Wood, not so much. Wood was lit up like a Christmas tree for the second time this spring, ending the day with a 1/3rd of an inning pitched giving up 6 runs (5 earned), on 3 hits, 2 walks, while striking out one.
Randy Wells will start today, Travis Wood, Lendy Castillo, Casey Coleman, and Trever Miller also are scheduled to pitch in the game at HoHoKam Park. Here is how the Cubs will lineup behind Randy Wells.

The Cubs beat the White Sox today 5-1. The pitching was the difference as the Cubs staff only surrendered four hits today. Starting pitcher Travis Wood pitched well and so did Randy Wells who induced a bases loaded double play to Paul Konerko to end the 3rd. Also in relief today was Lopez, Rhee, and Castillo. The Cubs offense was powered by Edgar Gonzalez, Steve Clevenger, and Marlon Byrd who all hit their first homers of the spring. Soriano stayed hot leading the game off with a double later scoring on a Darwin Barney base hit. It is always nice to beat the Chicago White Sox whether it is spring training or not.
Full Box Score on its way.

Travis Wood got some help from Randy Wells in getting out a bases loaded one out jam in the third inning. Big blow of the day was a two out two-run homer from Edgar Gonzalez. Bottom of the 4th, 3-1 Cubs. Check back tonight for a full recap.
Right handed pitcher Rafael Dolis, 24 has looked impressive so far this spring and he, like many other young players are hoping to make a good impression with the new Cubs brass and make it a hard decision to send him back to the minor leagues. (more…)
One game played this Spring, and already the buzz is all about Matt Szczur and Brett Jackson. Matt Szczur drove in six runs, including a grand slam, a two run double, and accomplished the rare feat of scoring from second base on a sacrifice fly for the Blue Team who blasted the white team 10-4. Brett Jackson was the one who got things started however, basting a lead off homer. Sparkplug Tony Campana finished the day with three hits, and three runs scored.
As you can imagine, in a game with 14 runs the pitching took it on the chin. Travis Wood gave up six runs on six hits including two homers in three innings, Wood is battling for one of the remaining rotation spots, not sure that this start will go too far in determining anything. Randy Wells, who is also battling for one of the remaining starts, gave up three runs on four hits in three innings of work. What the Cubs are looking for here is command, and innings at this point, and the first few games are not going to pretty for pitchers.
With games rapidly approaching, Dale Sveum and his coaching staff have set the first three spots in the rotation to open up the Spring
schedule this weekend. Rodrigo Lopez will get things started, he will be followed by Ryan Dempster, and Matt Garza. Dale Sveum was quick to caution fans trying to read too much into Dempster being ahead of Garza, saying that they will determine the rotation to start the season sometime in the middle of spring training. Lopez gets the first crack to prove he belongs at the back end of the Cubs rotation. Other competitors for the four/five spots in the rotation per Sveum are Randy Wells, Travis Wood, and Chris Volstad. It looks more and more like it will be something along the lines of Garza, Dempster and Maholm to head the rotation, but anything can and usually does happen in the Spring.
Throughout the season we will have features that we run each day of the week, one of them will be Media Monday. We hope to bring you all the best pictures, audio, and video (where allowed by MLB) from the past week. Obviously everyone is very excited about Spring training getting underway, please enjoy the content below.
