The Cubs offense exploded in the first inning today, scoring seven runs off of Seattle starter Jason Vargas. Believe it or not, that wasn’t enough for Travis Wood as he continues to really struggle with his mechanics and command. Wood who is vying for a spot in the Cubs rotation is pitching himself right out of it. Wood gave up seven runs on seven hits over two innings of work, and has now given up 13 runs on 13 hits in 4 and 2/3rds innings this Spring.
I mentioned in an earlier blog post that what could be better than two Cubs games in one day, well I meant as long as they don’t lose both. That’s exactly what happened today, as the Cubs fell 12-2 to the D-Backs, and 7-5 against the Rockies. Very few if any bright spots today, but Junior Lake and Michael Brenly hit HR’s, so there’s that. Kerry Wood got knocked around, so did Dempster, and Carlos Marmol tightroped his way thru a scoreless inning.
The last two Spring games have been a blue print of what the Cubs want to do this season. Timely hitting, a long ball or two, solid defense, and quality pitching, the more they get all of that, the more wins they will have. Dempster, Russell, Parker, Mateo, Corpas, and Coleman combined on a gem. Cubs pitching allowed six hits and one run on the day.

Fresh off a disappointing 2011 campaign, Ryan Dempster got back to work this off-season on and off the field. To have success moving forward, Dempster had to forget about the past, “I forgot about last April,” Dempster said. “I put that behind me.” Dempster has already moved on from last year, and he’s ready to prove that he belongs at the top of the rotation, and judging by the Spring he has had so far, he’s well on his way. His new head coach has already noticed it,

With games rapidly approaching, Dale Sveum and his coaching staff have set the first three spots in the rotation to open up the Spring
schedule this weekend. Rodrigo Lopez will get things started, he will be followed by Ryan Dempster, and Matt Garza. Dale Sveum was quick to caution fans trying to read too much into Dempster being ahead of Garza, saying that they will determine the rotation to start the season sometime in the middle of spring training. Lopez gets the first crack to prove he belongs at the back end of the Cubs rotation. Other competitors for the four/five spots in the rotation per Sveum are Randy Wells, Travis Wood, and Chris Volstad. It looks more and more like it will be something along the lines of Garza, Dempster and Maholm to head the rotation, but anything can and usually does happen in the Spring.
