Kyler Burke was good again on the mound for Peoria, unfortunately he left with a no decision after six strong innings of work.  Austin Kirk took over and was awesome, going two innings to come out with the win as Peoria knocked off Burlington for their fourth straight victory.  Anthony Giansanti was 2-for-4, which accounted for 1/3rd of Peoria’s hits in the victory.

All the scoring in this game took place in the first innings as Daytona scratched out a 2-1 victory over Brevard County.  Nelson Perez was the only offense for Daytona as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s.  Austin Kirk was stellar on the mound for Daytona, what else is new.  Kirk went seven strong innings only yielding one run on six hits.  Kirk improved to 2-0 and dropped his ERA to 1.75 on the season.  Tony Zych came on in the 9th and shut the door for his fourth save of the season.

FULL BOX SCORE GAME 1
FULL BOX SCORE GAME 2

Game 1:  The Smokies made up for a season’s worth of frustration against Jackson by pounding out 13 hits and scoring 15 runs to beat the Generals.  Logan Watkins and Rebel Ridling each had 4 RBI’s, and Michael Burgess chipped in with 3 of his own.  Junior Lake hit his first home run of the season en route to a 2-for-2 day in which he scored four runs.  Lost in all of the offense was Trey McNutt’s longest outing of the season as he went 5 strong innings for the win.

Game 2:  This game resembled the typical Smokies-Generals matchup.  The Generals pitching was too much for the Smokies, especially after that outburst in the first game.  The Smokies only managed one run on seven hits in the defeat.  Dallas Beeler went complete, well 7 innings which is how long the game lasted, but ended up with the loss.

Another game, and another bomb from Anthony Rizzo, his 12th of the season already.  That was enough for Rodrigo Lopez as he was awesome going five strong innings to pick up his first win of the season.  Blake Lalli hit a solo home run in the 5th to extend the lead and give the I-Cubs just enough to come out on top 3-1.  Scott Maine came on in the 9th inning to close the door earning his 2nd save of the season.

Here is your nightly recap for the Cubs minor league system, enjoy.

FULL BOX SCORE

Peoria dropped a nail biter to Belot on Wednesday night but that’s not the story.  The story is Paul Hoilman going 2-for-4 and extending his hit streak to 22 games which is a franchise record, Hoilman is now hitting .310 on the season.  Taiwan Easterling and Oliver Zapata each had two hits in the losing effort.  Kyler Burke was outstanding on the mound for Peoria going 6 and 1/3rd of an inning while only allowing two runs, it wasn’t enough however as Burke dropped to 0-2 on the season.

FULL BOX SCORE

Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-4 at the plate, and that was it as Daytona could only muster two hits the whole night in a 5-1 loss to Charlotte.  Zach Cates was tagged for the loss as he went five innings while allowing four runs on 8 hits, he falls to 0-5 on the season.

FULL BOX SCORE

The Smokies were also shut down on Wednesday night as they could only manage one run on four hits in a 4-1 loss to Birmingham.  Logan Watkins was the only threat in the Smokies lineup going 3-for-4 with a double.  Dallas Beeler took the loss after giving up three runs across 3 and 1/3rds of an inning.  Beeler falls to 0-2 despite a respectable ERA of 3.89.

FULL BOX SCORE

That one hurts, the I-Cubs rallied for six runs in the 8th inning to take a 7-2 lead only to watch that lead disappear in the final two innings ending in an 8-7 loss to Fresno.  Luis Valbuena and Alfredo Amezaga each had two hits in the losing effort.  Anthony Rizzo had the big hit of the game, at least at that point as he drove his PCL leading 10th home run over the wall for a 3-2 Iowa lead.  Fresno rallied for three in the 8th and three in the 9th to steal victory away from Iowa.  Frankie De La Cruz was outstanding out of the pen going three scoreless innings in relief of Rodrigo Lopez.  Frank Batista and Scott Maine couldn’t slam the door on the victory and they each gave up three runs in relief.

Cubs Watch Five Run Lead Disappear in Loss

Cubs radio play-by-play voice Pat Hughes hit the nail on the head entering the sixth inning when he said it’s a completely different team out there.  Such is spring training, the longer the game goes the earlier in the Spring the more players are swapped in and out.  The Cubs dominated for the first six innings today, as they built up a 6-1 lead by the bottom of the 4th inning behind a three run shot by Blake Dewitt in the second, and run scoring singles by Clevenger and Barney in the fourth.  The Cubs were clicking on all cylinders as they were working counts where necessary and jumping on fastballs early in the count when the situation called for it.
