Mather Continues to Make Strong Case

Joe Mather continues to impress as he hit a game winning solo homerun yesterday against the Texas Rangers.  He is making a strong case to make the opening day roster with a rather impressive spring thus far.  Not only has Mather had a nice spring with the bat, but his versatility should only improve his chances of making the team.  He can play the corner outfield spots and can also play both corner spots in the infield.  Mather, 29 hits from the right side of the plate, which if he makes the team he should get plenty of playing time against left-handed pitching as he could spell DeJesus, LaHair, and Sewart. Blake DeWitt Clears Waivers

Blake DeWitt

Blake DeWitt

It was eleven days ago when Blake DeWitt was designated for assignment.  Today the 26-year old utility player cleared waivers and the Cubs have sent him to Triple-A Iowa.  I am guessing DeWitt will be a non-roster invitee to Spring Training with a chance to win a reserve role, much like the one he had last year.  If he makes the team he will earn $1.1 million for the upcoming season.  If he does not make the team the Cubs will have to decide if they want him to play in Iowa in case of injury in Chicago, or they could release him.  Obviously the Cubs also could look to trade him between now and the start of the season as well.

Coming soon:  Pitchers and Catchers Report……. And hopefully

we have the Epstein compensation issue resolved soon.

21 Non Roster Players on Their Way to Mesa

Another sign that spring training is right around the corner, aside from the 50 degree temperatures in Chicago today, is that the Cubs have announced the twenty one non roster players that will be invited to spring training.  Headlining that list is 23 year old outfield prospect Brett Jackson.  While none of these players will necessarily break camp with the Cubs (nine have previous MLB experience) they will all have the same opportunity to do so during spring training.  It will be interesting to see how the Cubs new staff on, and off the field evaluates the organization’s time in Arizona.
