7/27: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A quick look at the Cubs minor leaguers on Friday, July 27.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs dropped a low scoring game to the AZL Athletics 3-1.  Lendy Castillo got the start as he continues to work his way back allowing one run on two hits in four innings.  He struck out six and took a no decision in this one.  Tyler Bremer gave up two runs and took the loss.  Carlos Martinez-Pumarino and Jin-Young Kim combined to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings, but the Cubs offense couldn’t come back.  The Cubs got their run in the first when Albert Almora hit a two-run double and then scored on a Jorge Soler RBI single.  Soler would add another hit on the night and stole a base.  Carlos Penalver was the only other Cubs player to record a hit on Friday.  This is not what we have come to expect from the Cubs, but they will get back on track soon.

Boise exploded to beat Tri-City 8-3.  The Hawks had five players with multi-hit games.  Daniel Vogelbach was one of those going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Gioskar Amaya and Marco Hernandez each had two hits, wtih Amaya driving in two.  Trey Martin and Xavier Batista also added two hits a piece.  Wilson Contreras connected on his second home run of the season, a three run shot in the second inning.  Willengton Cruz got his second win of the season out of the bullpen.  He pitched two strong innings striking out four.  James Pugliese started and gave up three runs in four innings of work.  Michael Heesch and Su-Min Jung each pitched well in relief.  After a tough 1-0 loss last night, it was nice to see Boise come back strong tonight.

Javier Baez gave Peoria a lead with a two-run shot in the eighth and the Chiefs held beating Cedar Rapids 3-2.  Baez’s 11th homer of the season turned out to be one of his biggest of his young career.  He finished the game 2-for-3 and is now hit a robust .341.  Wes Darvill also had two hits, including a double, a run scored, and an RBI.  Austin Reed recorded the win in relief, his fourth of the season.  Zach Cates got the start, pitching 5.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out seven.  Sheldon McDonald pitched two scoress inning in relief dropping his ERA to 1.91 on the season.  It has been exciting following Baez this year and he continues to impress.

Robert Whitenack and the staff were outstanding for the Daytona Cubs beating Bradenton 2-0.  Robert Whitenack got his first win since coming back from Tommy-John surgery.  He pitched five innings allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out four.  Eduardo Figuerora struck out four in three scoreless innings in relief.  AJ Morris closed the game out recording his second save of the season.  The offense lost Matt Szczur who was promoted to Tennessee was able to get enough to win.  Rebel Ridling hit his second home run of the season and had two hits.  Timothy Saunders also had two hits including a double and a run scored.  A big congrats to Robert and here’s to many more in the near future.

Jacksonville was able to score two runs in three different innings defeating Tennessee 6-4.  Junior Lake continued his hot stretch in this one going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Greg Rohan had two hits and connected on his fourth home run with the Smokies.  Juan Apodaca also had two hits and an RBI.  In his first game with Tennessee Matt Szczur went 0-for-4 with two strike outs.  Ty’relle Harris started and took the loss going 2.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits.  Zach Rosscup gave up two runs in 3.2 innings, but struck out an impressive six batters.  Casey Harman and Kevin Rhoderick also pitched in the loss.

Iowa wins, Iowa wins, Iowa wins.  It has been a rough go as of late so to beat Okalahoma City 5-0 is great to see.  Chris Volstad had his best start pitching eight scorelss innings.  He only surrendered four hits, walking three, and striking out five.  Alberto Cabrerea finished the game off throwing a scoreless ninth striking out two.  Alfredo Amezaga led off going 3-for-5 and scored a run.  Adrian Cardenas and Brian Esposito each had two hits with Cardenas hitting a double and scoring a run.  Dave Sappelt had a triple and drove in two on Friday.  Josh Vitters and Brett Jackson each recorded one hit and scored a run, Jackson also drove one in.  Hope this is signs to come for Chris Volstad and the Cubs.

7/24: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Tuesday July 24 minor league recap.

Peoria was off.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs were at it again on Tuesday beating the AZL Indians 9-2.  Jorge Soler did it again, hitting his second home run in four games.  This one off the scoreboard in left.  Soler would add another hit  ending the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Ben Carhart continued his hot hitting going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.  He also drove in three and scored a run.  Speaking of hot, Shawon Dunston Jr. had two more hits, a double and a triple plus he scored three runs from the lead off spot.  Albert Alomora did not have a hit, but did drive two runs in and scored two.  2012 Comp. pick Paul Blackburn recorded his first win of the season, pitching two scoreless innings in relief.  Another good win for the Cubs in the AZL.

Boise got another great pitching peformance out of their staff on Tuesday beating the Yakima Bears 2-1.  Ian Dickson was tremendous thowing six no-hit innings before being removed in the seventh.  Dickson struck out four en route to his second win of the season.  Hunter Ackerman gave up a run, but struck out three in 2.1 innings and Michael Hamann closed it out recording his first save of the season.  Jeimer Candelario had a nice night at the dish going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  In his first game as a Hawk, Dan Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with a double.  Gioskar Amaya, Stephen Bruno, and Trey Martin each added a hit and Bruno scored a run.  It is nice to see the Hawks pitching have a nice couple days here.

Daytona held on to beat Brevard County 4-3 on Tuesday night.  Matt Loosen started and got the win pitching six innings while allowing two runs on only three hits.  He also walked three and struck out eight, lowering his ERA to 2.81.  Ryan Searle struck out two in the seventh and AJ Morris pitched the last two recording his first save of the season.  Rubi Silva went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.  Ronald Torreyes, Matt Szczur, Rebel Ridling, and Micah Gibbs all had a hit.  Daytona will play two on Wednesday.

Tennessee was back in action Tuesday pounding Jacksonville 9-2.  The Smokies showed some power hitting three home runs on the evening.  Junior Lake was 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, and two RBIs.  Greg Rohan added two hits of his own including a home run and Michael Brenly connected on his fifth homer of the year.  Nelson Perez had his best day since going to Double-A as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Michael Burgess also added two hits and scored two runs.  Eric Jokisch got the start and the win for the Smokies giving up one run on four hits in five innings pitched while striking out eight.  Brian Schlitter, Kevin Rhoderick, and Casey Weathers combined to pitch the last four innings allowing one run and striking out five.  This is the way to come back after a day off.

Another day another bad loss for Iowa, losing 15-9 on Tuesday.  Offensively Iowa couldn’t have done much more on Tuesday scoring nine runs on twelve hits.  Welington Castillo was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.  Brett Jackson hit his 14th home run of the season and drove in two.  Josh Vitters had one hit and also drove in two as did Alfredo Amezaga.  Dave Sappelt and Diory Hernandez each had two hits as well.  The pitching was terrible yet again on Tuesday.  Rogrio Lopez got the start and promtly gave up eight runs in 3.2 innings pitched.  Ryan Rowland-Smith took the loss as he gave up three more runs in just 1.2 innings.  Iowa continues to struggle.

7/23: Around the Minor League System

Our nightly trip through the minors on July 23, 2012.  Tennessee had the night off and Daytona was postponed.

FULL BOX SCORE

AZL Cubs got back on track beating AZL Brewers 7-3.  First rund draft pick Albert Almora stole the show hitting his first professional home run.  A two-run bomb to left.  Ben Carhart had another nice night at the dish going 4-for-5 with a run scored.  Shawon Dunston Jr. and Trevor Gretzky, who replaced Almora each had two hits.  Dunston scored two runs and Gretzky drove one in.  Neftali Rosario added a hit and an RBI and Dan Vogelbach hit his 12th double of the season.  After the game Vogelbach tweeted that he was headed to Boise, so best of luck to him.  Arturo Maltos-Garcia  gave up two runs, but got the win in relief.  Steve Perakslis recorded his first save, striking out three in 2.2 innings.  Jorge Soler was hitless on Monday, going 0-for-5.  It was nice to see the Cubs get back on track Monday.

Boise won 3-0 behind the arm of Tayler Scott.  Scott earned his second win of the season, pitching six scoreless innings.  He surrendered only three hits, walked a batter and struck out four, his ERA now stands at 1.95.  Hayden Simpson pitched two scoreless innings and Matt Iannazzo pitched a scoreless ninth to record his first save.  The offense had a few bright spots.  Stephen Bruno was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Gioskar Amaya had a nice night at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run scored, and a run batted in.  Marco Hernandez and Trey Martin each scored a run for Boise as well.  The Hawks haven’t enough nights like this, but maybe things will be turning around for them.

It was a great pitchers dual until Peoria gave up two runs in the eighth, eventually losing to South Bend 2-0.   Yao-Lin Wang started and struck out five in only 3.2 innings of work.  Jeffry Antigua pitched well again, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three.  He dropped his ERA to 0.87.  Luis Liria took the loss, his fourth on the year.  Offensively there wasn’t too much happening as the Chiefs only were able to muster up two hits.  Chadd Krist and Yaniel Cabezas each had a double on Monday night.  Krist is now hitting .424 since his promotion from the Boise.  A nice pitched game, but a tough loss nonetheless.

The Iowa staff pitched pretty good on Monday, but it wasn’t good enough dropping the game to Albuquerque 3-1.  Brooks Raley got the start and took the loss.  He pitched five innings surrendering three runs, two earned on eight hits.  He also had an impressive eight strikeouts to go along with zero walks.  Esmailin Caridad and Michael Bowden combined to pitch the last three scoreless innings with Caridad striking out two.  At the dish Brian Esposito was the only Cub to have a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 and was the only Cub to drive in a run.  Adrian Cardenas and Josh Vitters each added a hit with Vitters hitting his 30th double of the season.  Iowa’s record now stands at 41-62.

7/18: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Minor league recap for July 18th, 2012.

FULL BOX SCORE

For most of the year the hitting in Arizona has been the highlight on Wednesday the pitching took center stage defeating the AZL Dodgers 4-0.  The Cubs used four pitchers to complete the three hit shutout.  Anthony Prieto started and pitched two innings striking out two while not allowing a baserunner.  Arutro Maltos-Garcia pitched two scorelss innings and Loiger Padron struck out three in his three innings of work.  Padron was awarded the win, his second of the season.  Alvido Jimenez pitched the last two innings preserving the shutout for the Cubs.  Offensively the Cubs did not do as much as we have come to expect, but there were still some highlights.  Ben Carhart was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Daniel Lockhart had a hit and drove in two runs.  Neftali Rosario was 2-for-3 and scored two runs on Wednesday night.  A great performance by the staff on Wednesday led to this win.

Boise’s two game winning streak came to an end dropping Wednesday’s game to Yakima 8-4.  Tayler Scott got the start giving up four runs in 4.2 innings.  He did not factor in the decision though as he left with the game tied.  Hayden Simpson took the loss giving up four runs in 2.1 innings.  The Cubs offense came off the bats of only a few players.  Five different players had two hits, but every other player was hitless.  Gioskar Amaya hit his fourth home run of the season and Trey Martin drove in a run with his two hits.  Jeimer Candelario had two hits and drove in two runs on Wednesday.  Stephen Bruno and Xavier Batista also had two hits a piece and scored a run.  Let’s see if the Hawks can get back on track on Thursday.

It was an exciting game between Peoria and West Michigan, but the Chiefs did not come out on top.  Losing by two entering the eighth, Peoria tied the game and sent it to extra innings.  Peoria scored one in the tenth, but then gave up two in the bottom half to lose 9-8.  On the offensive side of things every Chiefs player had a hit.  Chadd Krist was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.  Pin-Chieh Chen and Zeke DeVoss also had two hits and drove in two on the night.  Javier Baez continued his hot stretch adding two more hits, bringing his average to .333.  Bijan Rademacher and Oliver Zapata each drove in a run for Peoria.  The pitching was up and down on Wednesday Jose Rosario and Sheldon McDonald were not very good responsible for the first seven runs West Michigan gave up on Wednesday.  Luis Liria and Austin Reed each pitched two scoreless innings to put Peoria in line for the win.  Larry Suarez gave up two unearned runs in the tenth to take the loss.  This is a tough one to swallow as Peoria came back, took the lead, and then blew it in the end.

Two first inning runs turned out to be all Charlotte would need beating Daytona 3-1 on Wednesday.  PJ Francescon got the start and took the loss allowing three runs on seven hits and walking four in 5.1 innings.  The bullpen did all they could to keep the game close as Eduardo Figueroa, Ryan Searle, and Brian Schlitter combined to pitch 3.2 innings allowing no runs on only two hits.  The Daytona bats never really got going, only having five hits.  Taylor Davis was 1-for-2 including his second home run of the season.  The Cubs also got single hits from Matt Szczur, Matt Cerda, John Andreoli, and Elliot Soto.

Iowa took advantage of a lot of New Orleans mistakes to win 2-1 in 11 innings.  The Cubs won when James Adduci scored on a throwing error by New Orleans pitcher Gary Glover.  Brooks Raley pitched seven good innings allowing no runs on five hits.  he also walked four and struck four out, leaving with a chance to get the win.  Jay Jackson, however gave up a run in his one inning of work.  Michael Bowden pitched two scoreless innings and Jeff Beliveau struck out the side in his one inning of work earning his fourth win of the season.  Dave Sappelt was the only Cubs player to have more than one hit, he had two, including a double.  Brett Jackson hit his 20th double of the season and Welington Castillo also had a hit.  A nice win for Iowa on Wednesday night.

July 17, 2012 – Ready, go!

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs scored three in the top of the ninth to beat the AZL Mariners 6-5.  Dan Vogelbach continued crushing the ball going 2-for-5 with a home run, triple and three RBIs.  He is now hitting .360 with 7 HR 30RBI, and an OPS of 1.202.  The Cubs also got RBIs from Dan Lockhart, Ben Carhart, and Carlos PenalverShawon Dunston Jr. had another solid day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored.  David Bote and Penalver each had two hits on the day as well.  Steve Perakslis gave up two runs on three hits in relief, but managed to get the win.  Chad Martin picked up his first save of the season striking out three in a scoreless ninth.

Boise made it two in a row on Tuesday defeating Yakima 5-0.  The Hawks pitching was the story as James Pugliese, Michael Heesch, and Pet Levitt combined for the three hit shut out.  Pugliese got his first win of the season striking out five and allowing only one hit in five innings.  Heesch and Levitt each pitched two scoreless innings to close ou the game and secure a Boise win.  Lead-off hitter Trey Martin did his job reaching base five times.  He was 3-for-3 with two walks including his third home run of the season.  Marco Hernandez had a nice night as well going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Wilson Contreras and Rock Shoulders each had two hits as well.  Contreras and Carlos Escobar were responsible for driving in a run a piece for the Hawks.  Boise hasn’t won two in a row too often so hope more is to come.

Behind a tremendous effort from Matt Loosen the Cubs beat Charlotte 6-1.  Loosen started and recorded his eight win of the season.  He pitched into the eighth inning allowing only one run on five hits, while striking out six.  Jeffrey Lorick came on to record the last five outs and close the game out for Daytona.  Matt Szczur was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Ronald Torreyes and Elieser Bonne each had two hits with Torreyes driving in a run.  Rubi Silva added a hit and Micah Gibbs and Elliot Soto each had a hit and scored two runs on Tuesday.

It was a rough one for Tennessee losing the Jackson 9-2.  Nicholas Struck got the start and took the loss giving up six runs in just five innings of work.  Casey Harman pitched an inning in relief and was not any better giving up another three runs.  The good news from the staff came from Frank Batista and Tony Zych who combined to pitch the last three scorelss innings of the game.  Not much happened on the offensive side of things either.  Logan Watkins had two hits including a triple.  Justin Bour and Greg Rohan were the only Smokies to record RBIs, they also had a hit each.  Junior Lake and Jae-Hoon Ha were the only other Smokies to have a hit in the game.  Not a very good night for Tennessee on Tuesday.

Iowa scored two in the first, but that was all they could push across losing to New Orleans 7-2.  Chris Volstad was bad again giving up seven runs, six earned on eight hits in 5.2 innings pitched.  Brett Jackson was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, he also stole his 22nd base of the season.  Josh Vitters also had two hits and drove in his 52nd run of the season.  Alfredo Amezaga and Dave Sappelt each had two hits and Sappelt drove in a run.

7/11: Around the Cubs Minor League System

After every level getting the day off on Tuesday, here is a look at Wednesday’s minor league games.

FULL BOX SCORE 

The AZL Cubs were back to playing on Wednesday after a few day off.  They started right were they left off beating the AZL Padres 4-2.  Offensively Dan Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBIs.  Dan Lockhart was 3-for-3 with a double and a runs scored.  Ben Carhart and Garrett Schlecht each had a hit and Carhart scored a run.  Izaac Garsez drove in the other run for Cubs on the night.  David Henrie recorded his third win of the season pitching four perfect innings in relief while striking out three.  Lendy Castillo started his rehab assignment pitching two scoreless innings.

Tied at one after four innings, Boise was able to score two in the fifth and two in the sixth.  They would hold on to win the game beating Vancouver 5-1.  Jose Arias pitched good in getting his second win of the season.  He gave up one run on six hits in five innings.  Eduardo Orozco, Pete Levitt, and Bryce Shafer all pitched well in relief not allowing a run.  Offensively there were some good things that came out of Wednesday night as well.  Trey Martin was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.  Wilson Contreras was also 2-for-3 including a triple, a runs scored, and an RBI.  Rock Shoulders also hit a home run, his third of the season.  Stephen Bruno and Marco Hernandez each added a hit and a runs scored.  It was a nice win for Boise after a day off.

Javier Baez and the pitching staff was all Peoria needed on Wednesday.  Javier Baez connected on his seventh home run of the season in the second inning.  It proved to be the game winner as Peoria beat the Dragons 1-0.  Starting pitcher Starling Peralta pitched seven innings striking out four and only giving up two hits.  Larry Suarez struck out two in a scoreless inning of work and Yao-Lin Wang pitched a scoreless ninth to recored his 12th save of the season.  Oliver Zapata, Sergio Burruel, and Pin-Chieh Chen accounted for the other Chiefs hits, with Zapata hitting a double and Chen stole his 19th base on the season.  It was a great pitching performance by the Peoria pitching staff on Wednesday.

Daytona scored seven runs from the fourth inning as they went on to beat Palm Beach 7-2.  Kyler Burke got his first win since being promoted to Daytona.  He pitched six innings giving up two runs on six hits while striking out four and not walking anyone.  Jeffrey Lorick came in relief and pitched an unbelievable 1.2 innings not allowing a hit and striking out five.  Brian Schlitter was able to close the game out recording his second save of the season.  Matt Sczcur, who had been struggling was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI.  He also stole his 29th base of the season.  Ronald Torreyes was also 2-for-4 including a triple, a run scored, and an RBI.  Elieser Bonne had a hit and drove in two runs.  John Andreoli and Matt Cerda each had a hit and drove in a run, Andreoli also stole his 31st base of the season.  It was nice to see Burke get his first win since moving to Daytona and it was also nice to see Sczcur hopefully get back on track.

Wednesday’s game between Tennessee and Birmingham was postponed due to rain.  It will be made up as a double header on Thursday.

7/9: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A daily trip to the minors.

FULL BOX SCORE 

Boise gave up six in the sixth which was way too much to come back from.  Yakima beat the Hawks 10-4.  Offensively Trey Martin was 3-for-4 with a run scored.  Rock Shoulders connected on his second homer of the season.  Jeimer Candelario only had one hit, but he drove in two on the night.  Gioskar had a hit and drove in a run and Wilson Contreras had two hits.  Felix Pena pitched four quality innings only giving up one run on three hits.  Shawon Dunston Jr. had a triple and scored a run.  This year’s draft pick Bijan Rademacher had a hit and his average now stands at .406.  Willington Cruz struggled in an inning of work and took the loss, his third of the young season.

Peoria gave up three in the ninth to lose a heartbreaker to Cedar Rapids 4-3.  Although it was a tough loss there was some good that came out of the game.  Javier Baez had two hits today and connected on his sixth homer of the season.  Wes Darvill also was 2-for-4 and hit a home run and scored two runs.  The Chiefs got a hit a piece from Zeke DeVoss, Taiwan Easterling, Yasiel Balaguert, and Pin-Chieh Chen.  Balaguert hit a double and drove in a run.  Michael Jensen pitched well giving up one run on four hits in five innings.  Sheldon McDonald and Austin Reed each pitched well and Boise went into the ninth with a 3-1 lead.  Luis Liria really struggled with his command and gave up three runs in the ninth as Peoria lost a tough one.

Daytona jumped out scoring three in the first, but couldn’t hold it as they lost to Lakeland 5-4.  Offensively Arismendy Alcantara was 4-for-5 with a run scored.  John Andreoli and Rebel Ridling each had two hits with Ridling scoring two runs.  Matt Szczur, Rubi Silva, and Dustin Harrington each had a hit on the night.  Szczur scored one and drove one in and Silva drove in two on the night.  Robert Whitenack struggled giving up five runs on eight hits while walking three in 2.1 innings.  The bullpen did a great job not surrending a run and only giving up three hits in the next 5.2 innings.

A big four run third led to a Tennessee vicory on Monday.  Chattanooga had a late surge, but the Smokies held on to win 4-3.  Dallas Beeler started and got the win.  He gave up no runs on four hits while striking out seven in seven innings.  After some struggles Frank Batista had to come in and get the last two outs to record his 16th save.  Offensively Logan Watkins led the way going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, a run scored, and two RBIs.  Junior Lake, Justin Bour, and Juan Apodaca each had a hit.  Lake and Bour each hit a double and each drove in a run on Monday.  It was a nice win for Tennessee.

Your nightly trip around the bases for June 28th, 2012.

FULL BOX SCORE

AZL Cubs had a nice night winning 11-2.  Jacob Rogers had a great night at the plate going 4-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored, and four RBI’s.  Trey Martin had three hits and three RBI’s on Thursday.  Ben Carhart and Carlos Penalver each had two hits.  Dan Vogelbach and Justin Marra each had a double and drove in a run.  Carlos Martinez-Pumarino got the win pitching five innings in relief giving no runs on three hits while striking out five.  Nathan Dorris and Ryan Hartman each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.  Hope to see more nights like this from the Cubs as the summer goes forward.

We have been waiting, and Boise finally delivered beating Spokane 12-2.  Chadd Krist was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and one driven in.  Wilson Contreras also was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three driven in.  Stephen Bruno had two hits with a run scored and an RBI.  Dong-Yub Kim hit his second home run of the season, a grand slam.  Ian Dickson was the beneficiary of all those runs earning his first win of the season pitching five innings, giving up two runs, one earned on four hits, while striking out six.  Eduardo Orozco, Rafael Diplan, and Su-Min Jung all pitched well in relief.  All in all it was a very good night for the Hawks.

Gerardo Concepcion was roughed up early, giving up four runs in the first, but settled down as he pitched six inning giving up five runs on six hits.  He took the loss and is now 2-6 with a 7.39 ERA.  Javier Baez had a great night at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and three stolen bases.  Dustin Geiger, Taiwan Easterling, and Oliver Zapata all had RBI’s on the night and Paul Hoilman had two hits.  Larry Suarez also struggled in relief giving up two runs on four hits in two innings of work.

It was a great night for the Daytona offense beating Dunedin 14-4.  Cubs got home runs from Ronald Torreyes, Arismendy Alcantara, and Rebel Ridling.  Arismendy went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI’s.  Rubi Silva was also 3-for-5 including two doubles and drove in two.  Lead-off hitter Matt Szczur was on base five times.  He was 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI’s, three stolen bases, and three runs scored.    Robert Whitenack got the start but didn’t get the win pitching only four innings while giving up three runs, only one earned on six hits while striking out four.  A.J. Morris got the win in relief pitching two scoreless innings while striking out one.  Brian Schlitter threw another good outing in relief pitching a scoreless ninth.

Trey McNutt was not able to get out of the first inning on Friday pitching only .2 inning and giving up eight runs, four earned on six hits.  Ty’relle Harris threw four quality innings of relief giving up two runs, one earned on five hits, while striking out two.  The Smokies were pretty good at the plate scoring six runs on twelve hits.  Jae-Hoon Ha, Junior Lake, Michael Brenly, and Elliot Soto all had two hits on the night.  Nelson Perez and Brenly each hit a home run.  The Smokies also had RBI’s from Ha, Lake, Justin Bour, and James Adduci.

Chris Volstad pitched pretty good on Friday, but it wasn’t enough for Iowa losing 3-1.  Volstad gave up three runs, two earned on six hits in seven innings.  He also struck out seven and walked zero.  Matt Tolbert was great at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and a run scored.  Adrian Cardenas, Ty Wright, and Blake Lalli each had two hits.  Josh Vitters was finally held hitless and Brett Jackson went 1-for-5.  Jay Jackson struck out two and didn’t allow a baserunner in one inning of work out of the bullpen.

6/27: Around the Cubs Minor Leagues

The Cubs minor leagues on Wednesday, June 27.

FULL BOX SCORE

 The Cubs scored three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to beat the Angels 5-4 on Wednesday.  Trey Martin went 3-for-5 with a triple and a run scored.  Bijan Rademacher had two hits and a run scored.  David Bote hit his first home run of the season and had three RBI’s.  Dan Vogelbach had another hit and also had a walk.  Brian Smith got the start pitching four innings and giving up one run.  Arturo Maltos-Garcia was not that good, but got the win in relief.  Michael Heesch recorded his first save of the season striking out two batters in one inning of work.

 Spokane scored five unearned runs in the second which proved to be more than enough as they beat Boise 6-2 on Wednesday.  Taylor Scott gave up give runs, all of which were unearned on six hits in 3.1 innings.  Joseph Zeller pitched 3.2 innings in relief giving up one run and striking out two.  Marco Hernandez and Shawon Dunston Jr. had two hits a piece and Hernandez had an RBI.  Lance Rymel had the other Boise RBI on the night.  The Hawks record now stands at 4-9.

Jose Rosario and the Peoria Chiefs to the loss on Wednesday.  Rosario gave up three runs in five innings of work.  At the plate Dustin Geiger went 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Paul Hoilman had a double and RBI.  Zeke DeVoss, Anthony Giansanti, Yasiel Balaguert, and Oliver Zapata all had hits and Giansanti drove in a run.  Although they lost the Chiefs got some good news as Javier Baez played in his first game since having to leave early on Sunday.

Daytona pounded out 17 hits as they beat St. Lucie 12-1.  The Cubs got a huge night from Greg Rohan who went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI’s.  He now has 63.  The Cubs also had a nice day from Matt Szczur who was 3-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and a grand slam.  Ronald Torreyes and Arismendy Alcantara each had two hits and each drove in a run.  Rubi Silva, Rebel Ridling, and John Andreoli all had RBI’s.  Daytona’s pitching was also very good on Wednesday.  Austin Kirk earned his fourth win of the season pitching six scoreless innings while striking out six.  Eduardo Figueroa pitched three innings in relief to record his second save of the season.

Not much good came out of Wednesday for Tennessee.  They lost 11-0 giving up 21 hits while only recording three hits.  Dae-Eun Rhee got the loss tossing four innings giving up six runs on seven hits.  Casey Harman was not much better in relief giving up four runs on an unbelievable ten hits in only 2.2 innings.  Logan Watkins, James Adduci, and Michael Burgess had the only three hits the Smokies would have on Wednesday.  Not much more to say about this one, it was just a bad game.

 Iowa gave up at least one run in each of the first six innings played.  Josh Vtters had another good day going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple, two runs score, and one RBI.  Matt Tolbert, Dave Sappelt, and Diory Hernandez all had two hits a piece.  Ty Wright had three RBI’s and Adrian Cardenas added an RBI of his own on Wednesday.  Chris Rusin gave up eight runs on eight hits in four innings to drop his record to 6-6.  Alberto Cabrera did not fair much better giving up two runs in two innings.  Mike MacDougal, Jeff Beliveau, and Esmailin Caridad all pitched scoreless innings for Iowa in the game.

6/26: Around the Cubs Minor Leagues

A look at the minor league system for Tuesday, June 26.

 FULL BOX SCORE

 The Cubs lost 9-4 to the Dodgers on Tuesday night.  The Offense for the Cubs was pretty good as they had 10 hits and four runs.  Left fielder Trey Martin Led off on Tuesday and went 3-for-5 including a double and two runs scored.  Dan Vogelbach went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to raise his average to .412.  Bijan Rademacher hit his first home run of the season and Daniel Lockhart had a triple and had an RBI.  Alvido Jimenez struggled big time and took the loss on Tuesday.  Michael Hamann, Ethan Elias, and Daniel Adrian all pitched well in relief.

 Boise dropped another on Tuesday losing to Spokane 3-1.  James Pugliese took the loss allowing two rus on three hits in 4.2 innings.  Hayden Simpson had another strong outing allowing one run on two hits while striking out four in 3.1 innings.  There was not much good happening from the offense  as Boise only had three hits on the day.  Jeimer Candelario, Rock Shoulders, and Stephen Bruno had the only hits for the Hawks and Shoulders drove in the only run of the game.

Peoria was chasing two early, but tied it up in the sixth and then exploded in the tenth to win the game 7-2.  Paul Hoilman had a nice night going 2-for-5 with two RBI’s and a run scored.  The Chiefs got an RBI a piece from Taiwan Easterling, Dustin GeigerYasiel Balaguert, and Pin-Chieh Chen.  Chen also had two hits including a triple.  Oliver Zapata also had two hits and two runs scored on Tuesday.  The Chiefs got a nice start from Starling Peralta who pitched seven solid innings as he only gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out three.  Matthew Spencer got the win in relief, striking out three in two perfect innings of work.

Daytona took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth, but ended up losing a heartbreaker 4-3 in 12 innings.  The Cubs got a nice outing out of P.J. Francescon who gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings.  Ryan Searle took the loos out of the bullpen giving up one run in 2.2 innings.  The offense had 11 hits, three of which cam off the bat of Elieser Bonne, who also scored a run.  John Andreoli and Rebel Ridling each had two hits and Ridling added two RBI’s.  The other RBI came off the bat of Arismendy Alcantara.

The bats came alive for Tennessee beating Birmingham 11-6 on Tuesday.  The Smokies pounded out 15 hits and hit four home runs.  Michael Burgess hit two of those four homers in a game where he went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and four runs scored.  Michael Brenly also had a very nice night going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, three runs scored, and two RBI’s.  Jae-Hoon Ha had two hits including his third homer of the season, he also had three RBI’s.  Logan Watkins, Justin Bour, and James Adduci all had two hits and Watkins added two RBI’s as well.  Nicholas Struck got his ninth win of the season.  He gave allowed four runs, only one of which was earned in six innings.  Frank Batista pitched two innings striking out two batters in route to his 12th save of the season.

 In their first game with Anthony Rizzo in Chicago Iowa lost 3-1.  Frankie De La Cruz got the loss as he gave up three runs in five innings of work.  Ryan Rowland-Smith and Michael Bowden pitched well out of the bullpen on Tuesday.  Offensively there wasn’t much happening for Iowa.  Juan Apodaca went 2-for-4 with two doubles raising his average to .330.  Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters each added a hit and Blake Lalli had the only Cubs RBI on the day.
