A five run first for Omaha proved to be too much for Iowa to overcome. Chris Volstad gave up six runs in five innings of work, including four walks and six hits. Offensively Ty Wright had two hits including a double and a run scored. Blake Lalli, Alfredo Amezaga each had an RBI and Luis Valbuena hit a two-run homer in the ninth. Geovany Soto was the DH in the game and delivered a double in four AB’s. The Cubs got quite a scare as Anthony Rizzo left early with a leg injury when he crashed into a fence in front of the dugout. Thankfully xrays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day with a right knee contusion.

Iowa exploded for 14 runs on Sunday, putting up a five-spot in the third and adding six more in the fourth. It was a great day for most of the Cubs, especially for the top prospects in Iowa. Brett Jackson 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI’s, and a stolen base. Not to be outdone, Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-5 hitting two bombs and driving in four. Rizzo is now hitting .363 with 20 homers, and 53 RBI’s. Ty Wright also had three hits, two of which were doubles, and he scored three runs on the day. Juan Apodaca went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI’s. Josh Vitters and Dave Sappelt also had a hit and an RBI on Sunday. 6/9: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Another busy day around the Cubs minor league system as Iowa played their second straight double-header. Regardless of how busy they might be, a couple of teams are red-hot, let’s see if they continue their torrid pace, here is the recap for June 9th…

Five in a row for the red-hot Peoria Chiefs as they knocked off the Kane County Cougars 4-1 in Peoria. Kyler Burke was outstanding as he tossed seven almost un-hittable innings giving up no runs on two hits while striking out nine, doesn’t get much better than that. Burke got just enough offense as the Chiefs put up a four spot in the first inning, it was enough but it was all they would get. Anthony Giansanti back from a scary injury went 3-for-5 at the plate, he’s now hitting .333 on the season. Paul Bunyan, I mean Paul Hoilman and Wes Darvill each had two hits in the victory, each guy had a double as well. Zeke DeVoss, somewhat overshadowed but a great prospect in his own right, was 1-for-2 in the lead off spot with three walks, and a stolen base, doing his job right.
****

Daytona had a rough go of it tonight as they were blanked by Tampa 7-0. Not much went right at all as the D-Cubs only managed three hits while making two errors. Frank Del Valle started for Daytona and didn’t pitch too poorly but he didn’t get any help from his defense. Del Valle lasted five innings giving up three runs, two earned on four hits while walking two and striking out four. The loss drops Del Valle to 4-2 on the season while his ERA sits at 4.28. As I mentioned not much going on for the D-Cubs at the plate, only Arismendy Alcantara, Ronald Torreyes, and Rubi Silva had hits, all singles.
****

The Smokies are on fire as they beat Mississippi tonight 6-4 for their sixth straight victory. Dallas Beeler started for the Smokies are had a decent outing but did not figure in the decision as he gave up three runs on five hits in five innings of work. Frank Batista worked the final two innings of the game to earn his first win of the season as he gave up one run on three hits, his ERA is now 1.96 on the season. Nate Samson had a big day at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Rebel Ridling gave the Smokies the lead in the 3rd inning with his seventh home run of the season, a two run shot on his way to a 1-for-4 day.
****

Pitching stole the show in game one as the I-Cubs scratched out a 1-o win over Nashville. Brooks Raley was outstanding as he went the distance (7 innings in a DH) to earn his second victory of the season for Iowa. Raley held Nashville scoreless while giving up six hits, walking no one, and striking out six. Matt Tolbert was 2-for-3 at the plate with the big blow, a solo shot in the first inning providing the only run of the game. Dave Sappelt also had a good game at the plate as he went 2-for-2 and had a big outfield assist gunning down a runner at second.
Much of the same in game two as offense was at a premium, this time Nashville came out on top 3-2 scoring the game winning run in the top of the 6th inning after the I-Cubs rallied from two down to tie it in the 5th. Esmailin Caridad got the start for the I-Cubs, tends to happen when you play four games in two days. Caridad was good, and provided the innings the Cubs needed, he last four innings giving up two runs on two hits while walking three and striking out three. The I-Cubs couldn’t get much going offensively, Ty Wright was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Josh Vitters drove in one of the I-Cubs runs and was 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, he’s now hitting .271 on the season.

6-7: Around the Minor League System
Minor League recap for June 7.
Peoria’s pitching was magnificent once again as the Chiefs shutout Cedar Rapids on Thursday. Michael Jensen got his sixth win of the season as he only gave up one hit and struck out seven in five innings. Not to be outdone Felix Pena struck out five in two innings and Hunter Cervenka added two strikeouts in his two innings as he recorded his first save of the season. Cervenka’s ERA now stands at 0.73. Taiwan Easterling and Anthony Giansanti each had an RBI, which would prove to be all the Chiefs would need.

Tennessee got the scoring started early, but Mississippi would score the next seven taking a commanding 7-1 through the top of five. After Tennessee got a run back in the fifth, they would score four in the sixth with RBI’s from Nate Samson, Jae-Hoon Ha, Junior Lake, and Justin Bour. After the Smokies tied the game in the eighth, Logan Watkins won the game with a walkoff single in the ninth to give Tennessee an 8-7 win. The top of the order did a great job as Logan Watkins led off and had two hits, two walk, an RBI, and three runs scored. Jae-Hoon Ha hit second and had three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. The number three hitter Junior Lake went 3-for-3 and had two RBI’s. Cleanup hitter Justin Bour had two hits and three RBI’s as well. Matthew Cerda also contributed three hits on the evening. Dae-Eun Rhee struggled in his five innings of work, but the bullpen shut the Braves out for the last four innings and Alberto Cabrera got his second win of the year. A great comback for the Smokies.
****
Iowa scored two runs in the eighth to get the win 5-4 on Thursday night. After Nashville opened the scoring, Iowa came right back in the bottom of the second to tie the game on an RBI single by Dave Sappelt. The Cubs would score two more in the third on an Anthony Rizzo groundout followed by an RBI double by Josh Vitters. Nashville would get the next three runs off of Chris Volstad who pitched seven innings giving up four runs, three of which were earned. Going into the bottom of the eighth Iowa trailed 4-3 until Ty Wright came up and connected on a two-run homer, his fourth of the year to give the Cubs the lead. Scott Maine threw a scoreless ninth recording his fourth save of the season. Jeff Beliveau got the win.

Another good night for the Cubs system, this time two come from behind wins.

6/4: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Yes there were actual games played yesterday, not just the draft. Here is the Minor League recap from June 4th.

The Chiefs got an outstanding performance by almost their entire pitching staff on Monday Night en route to a 2-0 win over Kane County in the rubber game of the series. Five Peoria pitchers combined to throw the shutout with Ben Wells, Luis Lira, Larry Suarez, Sheldon McDonald all pitching two scoreless innings. Yao-Lin Wang pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 5th save of the season. The Chiefs only managed to scratch out two runs on five hits but it was good enough for the win. Javier Baez was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, a walk, and a stolen base. Pin-Chieh Chen was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored out of the ninth spot in the order.
****

The D-Cubs had plenty of hits saved up a night after being one hits and they put them to good use. Daytona pounded out 8 runs on 15 hits on their way to a 8-3 victory over Fort Myers. Frank Del Valle was really good for Daytona as he tossed six strong innings only giving up one run on four hits to earn his fourth victory of the season. The top of the D-Cubs order has hit all year and last night was no different. The top 6 in the D-Cubs lineup went 13-for-28 with three doubles, a triple, and six RBI’s. Arismendy Alcantara and Greg Rohan were each 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI’s in the win.
****

The Smokies got back in the win column thanks to a huge 7th inning where they scored six runs en route to a 7-4 victory over Montgomery. Dallas Beeler started and pitched well as gave up two runs on seven hits in five and one-third of an inning. Justin Bour was 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI’s in the win. James Adduci also had a big night at the plate as he was 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Marcus Hately pitched an inning and two-thirds of scoreless baseball out of the pen to get his second win of the season.
****

The I-Cubs just can’t snap out of it as they dropped yet another game to Oklahoma City Monday night. Iowa was leading 5-3 in the 6th inning, but OKC rallied for two in the 6th and one in the 7th to take the lead and eventually win 6-5. Chris Rusin didn’t have his best stuff but he battled through five innings allowing five runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three. The long ball did him in as two of the eight hits left the yard. Anthony Rizzo continues to assault triple-A pitching going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in the loss, he is now hitting .363 on the season. Ty Wright also had a big day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and RBI, and two runs scored.

6/3: Around the Cubs Minor League System
Here is Sunday’ Minor League recap, it’s not pretty as the whole organization took an o’fer.

We were in Kane County for this game, you can check out our recap here. Kyler Burke didn’t get any help from his defense on Sunday as he went five innings giving up five runs but only two of them were earned. Javier Baez didn’t start the game, but stole the show over the final four innings. In his first plate appearance he took the first pitch he saw and deposited it roughly 430 feet away over the center field wall to tie the game at five. Baez was also tremendous with the glove making three or four great plays, including two web gem efforts, just awesome. Taiwan Easterling was 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, and Oliver Zapata was 1-for-4 with a solo home run.
****

PJ Francescon didn’t have his best stuff, but it really didn’t matter as Daytona only managed one hit on the afternoon. Francescon went five innings allowing four runs on five hits, he suffered his second defeat of the season. Congratulations to Greg Rohan for getting the only hit for the D-Cubs in the loss. What hurts the most is coming into the game Boer had an ERA that was over 10, was expecting Daytona to tee off on him, but it wasn’t meant to be I guess. Matt Szczur didn’t play again, trying to get some updated information on him, hopefully it’s nothing too serious.
****

Nicholas Struck and company held Montgomery to two measly hits, but that was enough as they knocked off the Smokies 3-2. Struck tossed five and two-thirds of pretty good baseball only allowing three runs on two hits while walking two and striking out seven. The loss drops Struck to 5-6 on the season with a 4.41 ERA. The Smokies offense wasn’t much better than their opponent on Sunday. They only managed to plate two runs on five hits, with both runs coming in the 6th inning. Rebel Ridling was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Michael Burgess was 1-for-4 with a double and the other RBI for the Smokies.
****

It was a weekend to forget for the I-Cubs as they dropped games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was an on and off day for Brooks Raley as he worked five innings and allowed five runs on nine hits, but he only walked one guy and struck out nine, he must have had too much of the zone too often. The I-Cubs bats got Raley off the loss, but unfortunately they couldn’t completely rescue the team as the I-Cubs fell 6-5 to Oklahoma City. Ty Wright was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Anthony Rizzo, who has proven healthy that last couple days was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.

6/2: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Javier Baez hit his first home run of his proessional career on Saturday night helping the Chiefs destroy Kane County 15-3. Baez ended the game going 3-for-5 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Yasiel Balaguert and Taiwan Easterling also delivered three RBIS’s and Anthony Giansanti had two. Also contributing offensively was Wes Darvill who went 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. One of the more unusual stats came from Pin-Chieh Chen who went 1-for-1 with five walks and four runs scored. As good as the bats were on Saturday, starting pitcher Jose Rosario was just as good. He pitched seven scoreless innings giving up three hits and striking out ten. He improved his record to 4-5. The game got interesting late when up 13-0 Baez swung at a 3-0 pitch. Kane County’s manager visited the mound and Baez got hit in the ribs on the next pitch. Things stayed calm and Baez will learn from the experience.
****

After scoring 16 on Friday night, Daytona answered by scoring 10 more Saturday beating Fort Myers 10-5. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit as Daytona pounded out 16 hits. John Andreoli scored three time and he Rubi Silva both had three hits for the Cubs. Arismendy Alcantara and Nelson Perez added two hits a piece with each driving in three runs. The Cubs used four pitchers to take care of the win. Ryan Searle eventually got his second win of the year as he went three strong innings in relief only giving up two hits and striking out three. The Cubs bats look stay hot as we move into Sunday.
****

Montgomery outlasts Tennessee winning 4-3 in 10 innings. The Smokies got the scoring started in the second inning and scored another in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Montgomery would put up a three spot starter Dae-Eun Rhee in the sixth and the score would stay tied until the bottom of the tenth when the Biscuits walked off with a win. Jae-Hoon Ha had three hits and a run scored on the day. RBI’s came from Justin Bour, Nate Samson, and Elliot Soto. Junior Lake had rough day as he went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. It is always tough to lose games when you are up by three or more runs late in the game, we will see how Tennessee responds.
****

Iowa scored enough to win most nights, but giving up seven runs in the seventh proved to be too much. It looked good for Iowa early as they scored the first five runs of the game. Oklahoma City would get right back in the game when they scored four in the third. Iowa would score the next three runs of the game, however the bullpen could not hold the lead giving up seven in the seventh. Offensively there were a lot of good things as Brett Jackson stayed red hot going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple. Anthony Rizzo was back on Saturday, he went 2-for-4 with a double. Former first rounder Josh Vitters continues to swing a good bat as he had two hits including his ninth home run of the year. Luis Valbuena, Ty Wright, and Blake Lalli all had multi-hit games. Unfortunately for Cubs this game was pitched by are all designated team, as Rodrigo Lopez, Ryan Rowland-Smith, and Mike MacDougal were are all terrible. Hopefully Iowa can respond tomorrow with a victory.

Keven Rhoderick pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Frank Batista struck out the side to record his seventh save of the year.

Including Torreyes, Chad Noble, Rubi Silva, Greg Rohan, and Arismendy Alcantara all had two hits on the day. Brevard County got the scoring started in the first scoring three runs. Jay Jackson gave up the firs six runs and Shane Lindsay had a very rough outing walking four of the five batters he faced. All four runs in the sixth were charged to him and the Cubs lost 10-1 in game 2.

5/26: Around the Cubs Minor League System

That was plenty for Wisconsin as they added more runs to beat the Peoria 11-3. The Cubs lone bright spot came from SS Marco Hernandez who went 2-3 including a home run and a triple. Jake Devoss also added two hits and an RBI in the game.
****
Daytona got a great pitching performance from Matt Loosen as he improved his record to 2-1 on the season. He gave up one run on four hits while striking out seven in six innings of work. Scott Weismann struck out two in the ninth to record his second save of the season.
****
The Smokies got some pretty good pitching, but the offense never got going as Tennessee lost 3-0. Trey McNutt’s record dropped to 2-4 when he took the tough luck loss on Saturday. McNutt only went four innings giving up two earned runs on five hits. Ty’Relle Harris pitched two scoreless innings while striking out two and walking one. The Cubs took a lead in the eight when Anthony Rizzo connected on his league leading 17th home run of the season. Josh Vitters hit a homer in the ninth to give the Cubs a little breathing room.
